Sorry for bringing back this old thread, I would like to buy an UWA for my collection of D7k + 35mm prime + 85mm (macro).

I'm little tight on budget(around $500), it seems both nikkors (10-24 and 12-24) are out of my range. I could see Tokina 12-24, is that a good lens to try? Tokina 11-16 seems to be too short from 11-16, is that fine to use with 35mm prime? Also their prices have gone up by at least $150. :(

Any suggestions? How about some old lenses which I could try. Thanks.

For budget, I'd suggest the slow 10-20 (sigma 10-20/4-5.6). You trade off speed for price, but optically it is as good as the others (I've compared mine to my Tokina 11-16 and they are effectively indistinguishable at the same apertures).

If you can get one and if you could afford it, I'd suggest the 11-16 if you think you might need the 2.8. The 16 on the "long" end is not really as big a deal as you might think it is- between the 16 and your 35, you can always just take a few steps forward or back to get what you want, but this really depends on what and how you shoot. For instance, I often take only the 11-16 and a 70-300, or the 11-16 and the 50/1.8, and I don't notice any issues with the gap.

Tokina 12-24 all the way. Save some dough and get the older version (only upgrade was the AFS motor). I found the 11-16 was way too short for me and the extra stop really doesn't mean much on ultra wides.

I'm not a fan of Sigma even if they have some niche lenses. Quality control has always been their downfall.

Thanks jerl, TTJ. Will give it a shot at the tokina and see how it goes. If not then may be sigma.
