I bought the 12-24/f4 (DX) secondhand almost three years ago, and have been very pleased with it. Read a lot of comparison, and user, reviews in the Brit mag Amateur Photography at the time, and it seemed to perform better than most it was compared to.

I'm totally happy with its performance and the build-quality feels great in the hand and on the body.

I have a few pix on my Flicker stream that were taken using the 12-24 lens - "Small room", "Peugeot 404" and "Citroen Light 15" are taken with it, as is the shaky handheld (1/15th sec) of the "Tour Down Under 2012, stage 6".

I have the Tokina 11-16 and am overall very pleased with it. Everyone says you don't need f2.8, but there is an overlooked benifit. The sharpest aperature of a lens is about 2 stops down from it's widest aperature. This makes the sweet spot of the Tokina at f5.6. If you have a max aperature of f4, that makes the sweet spot at f8. Now I will shoot f8 in full light, but I also shoot alot at dusk or dawn, F8 may not let enough light in for that.

On the downside, Tokina had to limit the zoom range to keep the quality acceptable at wide open. 11-16 is not alot. This lens feels almost like a prime. I also prefer Nikon's focus override, Just grab the focus knob and tweak it if needed. Tokina has that push pull focus clutch. It's either auto or full manual focus. I felt it was okay on this lens because being so wide, depth of field is big enough that you don't need to tweak the focus. I have found it to be the case here.

On the plus side, I bought my 11-16 for $585 about 2 years ago. You aren't gonna beat that deal with a Nikon lens.

Thanks everyone for your input and comments. I ordered the Nikon 10-24 mm lens and it is on order. There is another BO situation with Nikon so I am not sure when it will arrive, but I am anxious to try it out when it arrives!

Good luck with the lens rschnaible....I have the 10-24mm but unfortunately I just can't seem to get the hang of a wide lens.Shooting macro and telephoto as much as I do,every time that I slap on the 10-24 and look through the viewfinder,I feel like i've just landed on an alien planet.

I keep telling myself that I need to shoot with it everyday for six months or so to see if I need to keep it.

@shutterdancer... try going into a large public place, like a train station, bus station, or a street corner. Sit down on something, keep the camera level, and just start to shoot as people walk by. Camera at maybe three to four feet off the ground, but held level. Something like an auto show is good. Shoot the cars from a monopod. Or a flower show, take it up on the monopod and shoot very wide shots of the flowers and people. Use high downward angled shots. The some level shots.

Also, go into a small room, stand in the corner and again, holding the camera very level, shoot the room from the corner, or one side.

Then look at all these in the computer and decide if this is what you like. You will no doubt have an understanding of at least some of what the lens does in tight places. As a matter of fact, do not even look through the viewfinder with some shots. You cannot on the end of a monopod anyway. If you get five out of a hundred then you have done well. But, you will also have learned a lot about the lens.

This is what I do now and then with stuff I haven't used in a while. Good luck. Some of us, love the wide angle look.

Thanks for those good tips msmoto.I love the wide angle look too,but I'm in a rut of switching between my Sigma 150mm and my 300f4.and I just haven't taken the time to learn how to wield a wide angle properly.Maybe when the weather gets cooler and the critters stop moving ;>)

Shutterdancer, I think msmoto has excellent points. I am from the days when we only had one lens (all I could afford) and the photographer had to zoom in and out with the body and camera to capture interesting angles and such. Since we were shooting film, we really had to think about each shot or it got expensive. Maybe go out for a day and only take the single wide angle lens with you and just have fun shooting away. After a few hours you will get he hang of it :)The journey is most of the fun (although the great shot that is aquired is quite gratifying too) :)

The good news is that the 105 mm macro is in stock and on its way so don't be surprised when I am asking questions about macro techniques :)

My 10-24mm is probably my favourite lens, most of the landscapes I've done have been at 10mm too. I like them wide and deep. This lens really gives its images the feeling that the sky is being pulled right over your head and the foreground right under your feet.

Thanks rschnaible...I do love viewing photos with the extreme wide look,but the culture shock of going between macro and super wide is daunting ;). Like Postman says ....The wider they are the better I like them.I'm getting old though,and I still haven't mastered macro....as much as I would love to be able to do it all....I just might not have the time ;)
