April 14: potential release date - still not sure if it will be the D40 or the D300 replacement:

btw, D40 is not in production any longer:

Might see something on the 14th. Otherwise just get it. I love the d40 and it's best in class sync speed. Take that d3x!

Sorry, can't let you off that easily.

You can get a D40 with a kit lens for about $400 off Amazon. If you don't have a nikon lens this is the way to go. If you DO have a lens, then you might want to consider a referbrished D40X selling at adorama for about $350. You don't get a lens, but you do get an extra 4 megapixels (10 instead of 6). On the downside, you give up some ergonomics, and you don't have the flash sync speed (irrelevant unless you are really into flash, but how will you know until you get an entry level DSLR?). The D40 kit lens runs about $100.

Welcome to the world of photography, where every choice is a trade-off.

Oh yes, I forgot to say that whatever replaces the D40 will come out after you purchase it and will be soooo much better.

If you are ok with an older model, then I would suggest getting a D80.If you really are serious about photography you will miss several options that you could have got with the D80 if you just had put in a bit more money.
I also regretted buying a kit lens almost immediately but had to shoot with it for a year as I couldn't afford anything better.

You can also get D200 - which is much better than D80, and the price is very tempting right now - 650USD at bestbuy.com
As for d40 is really a nice camera - and very small, great back up body for serious amateurs.

I LOVED my D40, until I started getting lenses. Alot of my favorite lenses are older and not AF-s. Without it you cant autofocus on the D40. My D80 was a much better choice, a little older yes, but as said above had options that I did miss with the 40. I have seen 80's pop up on CL for under 400 bucks lately. Either way you go, they are all great!

Yes, I would go for the D80 as well. Older lenses are cheaper.

If not, you could go for the D50.
