Hi, new poster so please bear with me, I have just bought new D700 and new 105mm F2.8 VR Micro lens.
When set to Aperture Priority at F2.8 and focused on middle to far distance it behaves normally, i.e. keeping the F2.8 and changing the shutter speed according to the light, however she I then focus on something 4 to 6 feet away The APERTURE increases to F3.0 or F3.5, if I focus at 1 to 2 feet the APERTURE increases to F4 to F4.5. Has anyone else found this or do I have a problem with this particular lens? Anyone else with a 105mm F2.8 VR Micro lens care to try the above and report back? I do not recall this happening with any other fixed focal length lenses I have owned. many thanks.

I have the same combination and get exactly the same results, never notice it before as I shoot at between f8 and f 22, when doing close ups

it also stops down to f 38, which I had noticed

( if you put this lens of a D800 the results are awesome)

Not a problem, that is normal behavior for a macro lens. The lens just reports the effective aperture at macro range.

Many Thanks for your reply, I would normally use F8- F16 except when shooting creative tight headshot portraits where I use F2.8 or F4.0 . I really wanted to see if this was a general characteristic of this lens or a indication of a problem, cheers.

Yes, this is normal. It only shoots at 2.8 if you are focusing at infinity.

Any macro lengths and you'll be shooting at smaller apertures. Down at 1:1 reproduction it starts off at f/4.8 or so.

I'm pretty sure that's in the manual.

Yap, normal for that lense, congrat. You still have to expect a steep learning curve. Macro ain't easy and don't expect too much at first.
