monty11 - very nice lighting, tell us more about the place, as it looks like some ancient tomb - is it from Estonia?
art - again very interesting photo, nice composition

@adamz: great animal portrait! I like the choice of B&W, it really brings out the texture of his mane, very nice.
@art: great composition, and I like the swirling feel of it. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's missing something that would just make it pop.
@monty11: Same thing as art, I understand it's an interesting shape and all but it seems like it's missing something that would make it pop. Also, it could be a bit more contrasty IMO.

One from a few days ago at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park. This is very rule of thirds, I put the branch just below a third and the center of the butterfly wing on the far right third leaving the upper left as negative space. I really like the detail in the butterfly's eye.

Gravity
This is my type of photo! I love it and I should try to use the rule of thirds more often when my subject cooperate. The butterfly is in great detail and I love the bokeh!

Yes, my picture is an ancient cairn quite close to where my in-laws live :D
They are 8th-7th century BC and were discovered in 1982 during the construction of a new road.@Gentoo: It is a bit tilted and I'd remove the three bits in the lower part of the frame.
This one is from later that day, too bad it was without sunshine.

monty11 - with Your every picture I want more and more to go to Estonia :); the river shot is very nice, I really like the guiding lines, You can try to crop it to square to make even more impact
gravity84 - nice butterfly, a like the composition and I think that You took the most from the lens You had - good job
gentoo - great colors, try to level the picture and crop it a little bit, so in the front there will be just water, also clone out this three white reflections on the water (bottom left area) as they are little distracting - anyway, great colors and nice composition

Thanks for the tips everyone. I may have all the tech stuff down but the art side I could always use help on. I took several shots of this but couldn't get it just right. This was the best I could do. Now I know how to fix it :)

@heartfisher
I love this one! The colors are great and I how the trees jet up into the pink and purple sky.
Perhaps I would have tried to bring a little bit out of the shadows, but this is just personal preface. It's a great shot!

@adamz : Very very nice lion picture, reminds me of the narnia lion, whats his name? ... ... ASLAN.
@ art : what is that ? like it !Thanks for the nice comments on my first picture. It was taken a few years ago now.
Ok my first real water dragon shots! Took them today at sunset. I have been trying to get a picture of these wonderful creatures for years! Finally done it ! .. Taken with my cool 35-70 f2.8. yes I was very close to the beast!.. so surprised it let me near!. I guess he felt safe. One slip and I would have gone down a 4 meter cliff! LOL

heartyfisher - love this shot, great bokeh and eye sharpness, also the shadows on the right part

The same location but a different view, I do not want to appear obtuse but I feel full explanations sometimes detract from the visual impact of an image, all I will say is that it is an architectural subject.
Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions, I am pleased this thread has become so active, we can all benefit from being ' exposed ' to other photographers images.

Art, your images are a true inspiration. I've always been drawn to optical illusions and forms. One of my favourite artists is M.C. Escher.
This here is my masterpiece from about seven hours ago. I do like the photo also, but it was taken in a hurry as the guests were getting impatient. It's a pumpkin puree soup with ginger, curry, smoked cheese and roasted pumpkin seeds.

Looks delicious, Monty!
Haven't posted anything in a few days, here's something from this morning. The cherry blossoms are blooming!

heartfisher:
Another great shot with the waterdragon. He has that "I will eat your face" look to him. Lots of nice contrast and good bokeh too!
monty11:
Another great expression in bokeh! I love backgrounds that are just out of focus like this. It's often how I try to do my shots.
adamz:
I'm normally not much for B&W as I am a color person but that lion is just awesome! It reminds me of when I used to watch animal documentaries on my little B&W TV when I was a kid.Posted 4 years ago # -

@Gentoo: I like the symmetry and the reflection but I think some of the interesting parts of the picture are obscured by the perspective. The reflections of the tallest building in the skyline on the water is obscured by the fountain, which also takes away from the subject (the fountain). Perhaps stepping to the right a bit would render the reflections more favorably. Also, have you thought about using a Grad ND to mask the sky, or use an overall ND so you can do a longer exposure?
@tai: Great balance and composition, I love the juxtaposition of colors and the hard abrasive rock against the soft pleasant cherry blossoms.
@art: Very cool minimal. They are hypnotic. These remind me of something I saw in the modern art section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art a few months ago.
