I just read Professor_3's story about being duped with a D5000 when he ordered a D90 (D300 vs D700). I'm wondering why this site doesn't have an area where we can warn each other about these crooks.
Warning!!!!

Because these tactics are well documented! We really can't hold your hand and go buy a camera with you :^)
If the price sounds too good to be true.....Here's the post Newfie is talking about.

The problem is that there are more crooks out there than there are reliable sellers. Here is my "Safe List"
Mid-West Photo Exchange - Great for flash and flash accessories. Also good for general photo needs
Adorama - My first purchase from Adorama was the 24-70mm Nikon. I didn't know it, but my credit card had a daily limit that was lower than the cost of the lens. I thought their system was messed up so I got it off Amazon instead. That's when I realized the credit card issue. I called the CC company and had them raise the daily limit. When that happened, my Adorama order that I forgot to cancel went through. Imagine my surprise when I had two 24-70's! Adorama handled the return without any issues. That speaks volumes about a retailer.
Camult - Never bought anything major off them, but they ship very fast and I've never had any issues.
Amazon - My go-to source for most gear. Helpful reviews, Very good pricing. Watch out for their thrid party retailers. I love Amazon prime. I buy most of my stuff, photography and otherwise, on line. When I buy it from Amazon I get free 2 day delivery.
Best Buy - Don't Laugh! I got my D200 from best buy for $600. Normally, these guys suck, but they make the list for being the only on-line retailer where I was able to sell my purchase for a profit. I suspect that Best Buy got Circuit City's D200's when they went bust. On the down-side, they charge sales tax, and the pricing is normally terrible.
Precision Camera - My very expensive local shop. They were the only shop I could find the Tokina 11-16 AF. Knowledgeable staff. Try the product before you buy... nuff said.
I've also used B&H, and 51st street photo w/o incident.

How about Abe's of Maine?
I haven't bought anything from them, but I do hear about them a lot.
Wow, you had 2 24-70's huh?
You could have sold that for cheap to me you know. It'll be odd on the D40, but I'm not going to complain.

LOL, I actually used it once on my D40... It was really very awkward. I wanted a battery pack for my D40 just to balance it out.
No big deal really... you just wind up holding it by the lens... Maybe If I stuck my new SB900 on it...
I bought some cheapo gear from Abe's (less than $20 light modifiers) once. No incident, but the shipping was slower than I'd like.

Abe's of Maine is good.
Willis I've never heard of 51st Street Photo? You sure you've got the right name?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Probably not... they were a third party amazon vendor... I'll look up the exact name tomorrow.

Abe's of Maine is good, but can have shoddy service sometimes. If you complain about it, then they'll usually be very accommodating, which is how the earned my service back.

http://www.harrisoncameras.co.uk/ Was recommended on a local forum
http://www.robertwhite.co.uk/ Purchased my 35mm from themIn regards to scammers, well it is really hard to keep track of them (wonder why) and they tend to change names and locations more often than most people change their underwear.

Haha, Willis, I'm sure it worked fine, but walking around with that lens I'm afraid the lens will snap off the mount on the D40 if I forgot to support it. :D
The lens is most definitely better built than the D40. :D

Say what you want about Ken Rockwell... the guy buys lots of gear. He's got a whole article about it, and its probably the most useful thing on his site.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Ken reviews gear he doesn't even HAVE!!! Or better yet he reviews cameras that don't even exist yet!!!
Posted 3 years ago # -
guys - please don't bring back KR topic over here - keep peace !
Posted 3 years ago # -
I say we ban the next person who mentions Ken....Oops.

Oh no! We'll miss you Niko!
Posted 3 years ago # -

Posted 3 years ago # -
Hey you can't ban the guy who came up with the idea! ;^) Besides I didn't say the whole name, so you don't know who I'm talking about ;^)
