@SquamishPhoto Mmmm....front element about 3/4 inch larger than the 400mm f/2.8 on that 300mm f/2.0. Suggests a price in the $12,000-15,000 range. As the price goes up as the cube of the diameter ....sort of

    AF-S 135mm f2 DC.... is this different than a AF DC-Nikkor 135mm f/2D? The current 135mm f/2 NIKKOR is phenomenal!

And.... this thread has gone to the silly farm.....

I want the D400 but only if they improve the AF from what the D7000 is.

Well, having shot with a friends before I can attest to the rather terrible AF speed of the lens. I would hope that nothing was done to the optical arrangement unless it only managed to improve on what was indeed a legendary piece of glass, but AF-S speed would be a very welcome update for a lot of users. Getting all the other bells and whistles like Nano juice and VRII would make it nice too, although it would make it a good chunk of change.

How about an AF-S 300mm f2? Price it just above the 400mm 2.8, maybe? ;]

How about a Nikon sponsored sherpa for life with those monsters. ;D

OK, I think I understand. I have actually never used the AF DC-Nikkor 135mm f/2D in a situation which requires rapid focus and thus have not noticed a problem. But I cannot imagine an improvement in the optics.

Of course the D400 and D600 but also on the wish list......

Range finder style DX format interchangeable lens camera.

How about a cellphone or at least a partnership with a cellphone manufacture to provide high end cameras. Why you ask? Well cellphone cameras are eating up the point and shoot market and we all need Nikon to make big profits in the point and shoot market to help fund the high end cameras we all want! Besides I'd love to have a Andriod powered cellphone with a Nikon camera in it. My friends would be bragging about their new iPhone what ever and I'd say look at my Nikon phone, oh I mean camera, oh I mean phone!!!!

    Hi all,

I sort of have what I want, just not the way I want it. I'd like it smaller with the same stuff, but then, I guess, it wouldn't be the same stuff.
    ...

:-) You mean like the fujifilm x-pro1 ? .. had a good look at it the last few days and good grief! too awesome.. tempted... I didn't believe it when I heard people say its got high iso performance at least as good as the FF D700. More resolving power than a 21MP Canon and better colour depth than both of them.. plus the velvia, provia, astia simulated colours are sweet!

But its the price of the D400..May have to spend my D400 money on it.. been waiting 2 years! Sigh.. I guess I will have to wait a bit longer... I probably have enough saved up for a D800 even though I really wanted the D400. :-)

Please Mr Nikon (and Mrs Nikon and all the Nikon family) please find an FM3A, take out the film holder and film advance gubbins and pop in some digital bits and bobs so that I can use my manual Nikon lens on a user friendly digital body. Can't understand why Nikon bother inventing things like the J1/V1 - no idea who they would appeal to since there are so many excellent competitors out there. I don't want auto focus and all that in camera menu business and hundreds of little buttons all over the body - I find it hard enought to master focus, aperture and film speed - how could I cope with pages of menu items to confuse and confound me? I often see digital photographers staring at the backs of their cameras and twiddling nobs- thereby missing the good shots. Bare minimum of menu pages and buttons, die cast copper silumin body -maybe even available in black finish as an option. Once I get the image onto the computer at home I can fiddle with Photoshop etc if the shots want fiddling with. Have the loot ready to buy several as soon as you can turn em out.........

D400 and D7200. No INTEREST whatsoever in anything else. I don't have the time or inclination to keep playing around seeing if Nikon has improved their DX line (which sadly needs it). FX lack of depth of field leaves me with NO interest in that primrose path. I am beginning to think I'd almost as soon go back to large format like 8X10 which by the way was a huge mistake for me personally. Lots of money, too slow, too cumbersome. Only B&H Photo and Video challenged that avenue. That left me iht a very great amount of respect for them. When I talk to photographers in the field.....they ALL say D400 (DX!!, not FX) and some for just an updated D7000 (D7200).

I want to see a stills only full frame with a rugged weatherproof body, a grip that WASN'T designed for children, 24mp, high ISO capability, native x-sync to 1/320th and built-in Pocketwizard iTTL radio trigger control for speedlights.

I also want to see true weatherproofed lenses. (a la Pentax)

Also, weatherproofed speedlights with built-in Pocketwizard iTTL tranceivers.

Also, a more universal wifi adapter that is compatible with older Nikon bodies, and offers wireless tethering and control with Android devices.

    NOW.

They made that one. It's called the D40.

D400? What, haven't you heard DX is dead? :) I can see why some would want pro or semi-pro body DX, but the 6FPS of my D7000 is enough for me. I'm close to buying a refurb D800, but I'd trade the higher resolution for cleaner high iso. And the photos from a certain D4 owner on PAD say it's a darn good sensor...

I had to smile when I saw this thread, Why is it, we must have the latest all singing all dancing camera/lenses. If photographers spent more time learning their craft with their current equipment, rather than in front of a computer, then that alone would produce better photographic results, Oh, and it would be a lot cheaper!

After all, I thought it was the photographer who was in charge, not the camera, or are we going into the phase of
    Robotic Thinking Cameras/Lenses

    Maybe we are!

@PaulR - I don't disagree, but I suspect for most on this site - and it is a rumors site after all - gear matters but it's not the "all singing all dancing" auto everything camera we want - it's a more capable tool. I spent years with an all-manual Nikon FM and loved it. When I switched to a DSLR, for about 7 years I shot with a D70 and when I finally upgraded to a D7000 about 2 years ago wondered why I'd waited that long - the better DR, lower noise, faster all around performance - allow me to take shots I couldn't have with the D70. One of my favorite parts of NR, though, is PAD - seeing what others do well is a great way to pick up techniques to try on one's own.

I want a D7100 to show up, not because I want one, but because I want a D7000 for cheaper.

Say, another $100 off and I'd pull the trigger on one. I know they've been selling for around $950 body only with a lot of goodies, but I don't really need the goodies.

For me the D40 is nothing like as tactile as an FM3a - it is all plasticky and is a squat wee beastie - apart from that however it won't meter with manual lenses so no use. I see there was asimilar thread where people were after a digital F3 - now that would be nice...

Ok then, the D7000. It meters.

None of those modern digital bodies are like the older mechanical bodies. Modern bodies have all the bells and whistles, but lack the powerful simplicity of the older cameras like the FM series.

It seems people have been waiting on the D400 longer than those who waited on the D700 refresh. Oh wait that never did materialize. Personally I'd be very interested in a 80-400mm VR II lens with a new autofocus motor. This could be very useful for my future travel plans once I'm done my damn studies next spring..

Here here! With better video quality than the D4, better high ISO video than the D800 and a true quiet shutter. Would be the most popular dslr ever! Been dreaming of a Nikon like this for years but finally giving up. Doubt Nikon will ever do it. They want amateur shooters like me (a growing section of the market) to fork out £6000 for a heavy D4. Not ever going to happen. About to buy a 5D MarkIII soon to get the high ISO stills AND video performance I crave for gigs, weddings etc. Sadly have to forget about that Nikon picture quality and wider functions. I need an all-rounder now. Nikon has abandoned me to Canon alas and left me with no option but to invest in Canon for the long term. No point in waiting any longer.
