Amazing that they could come to such a conclusion.
Total score for D800 is 82%, for 7D it is 84%.
According to them the 7D is way better at 'Metering & focus accuracy' for instance. And almost as good at jpeg image quality. Good grief, one wonders what they're on.

Arent reviews a product of their time and done against a baseline that was relevant when that particular camera was released?

A point and shoot camera can get 84% and a FF camera can get 82%. That does not make the point and shoot camera better than the FF Camera.

I think they compare point and shoot cameras to point and shoot cameras and FF cameras to FF cameras.

In the end the Canon 7D is a very good DX camera and the D800 is a very good FF camera.

What would the equivalent from the Canon 7D be for Nikon? By the look of the 7D, it looks like a very good camera at a good price.

I don't think you can really compare older cameras to current, as the standard for new cameras are higher than it has been in the past thus making the comparisons irrelevant.

They compare semi-pro to semi-pro and both these are considered semi-pro in their listings.
P+S get compared to P+S of course, which has nothing to do with this.

'Reviews a product of their time' - well ok, but there's only 3 years between these and that hardly counts. Both are available in the same shops so one has to keep the playing field level.

Fishnose - it seems to me you are trying to defend your original post. 3 years "hardly counts" -- say what?? Are you into technology at all? Do you know for a fact that these two camera's ("both are considered semi-pro") are considered under the same standards and criteria?

And then, bottom line, if someone freaks out just because some review says one camera is better than another, then that person needs to get a life. I suggest that person buy the Canon and hang out at Canon Rumors.

The DPReview criteria are not consistent from year to year- you need to take it with a grain of salt.

Notice that the "awards" weren't given out the time they reviewed the 7D.

And I can't believe the 7D is a 3+ year old camera now.

DPReview is now owned by Amazon. Please do not forget that factoid. So for me, and this is just for me. When it comes to their reviews I will read the basic facts but place little value on their ratings. Why?

Again, this just for me, as I have no proof. I am suspect of their ratings because I have to wonder if the ratings are influenced by potential sales.

I use a Canon 7D for work daily because I'm forced to. I've spent many hours and have taken 1000's of photos with the 7D. I even teach other people how to use the Canon 7D in our workplace, so I'm more than familiar with this camera. That being said, I own and shoot a Nikon D800 as my personal camera. Being a "real world" photographer who has used both cameras extensively in real world scenarios I can honestly say DPreview is as high as a kite if they're even putting these two cameras in the same category let alone claiming the Canon 7D is a better camera overall for ANY sort of photography. It simply isn't.

I'm a fan of Dpreview and I've spent a fair amount of time on their site, but like all "reviews" readers have to take into account that they're not scientific nor are they even accurate technically. If you want scientific and accurate go to DXO Mark ratings. If you want a typical flawed and biased review then head over to Dpreview.

LOL.. every year counts, because sensor technology (among other things) develops very rapidly. Never get confused about this. Unless the new sensor is botched up at the plant, it is always going to be better than the last generation sensor, for example.

Yes, they do claim to use the same relative scoring for comparable camreas. In their OWN WORDS: "All scores are relative to the other cameras in the same category".
In fact the 7D is only 2½ years old. And still sold.

Next point: this has nothing to do with Canon. They also think the Pentax K-5 is a better camera than the D800 in many respects, including total score. And the Nikon D300s is just as good. And better in many respects.

Sound reasonable? I don't think so.

place take it according to specific part, when You compare lcd screen than yes canon 5d III is better, when You compare the fps than yes d300s is better - therefore they both get more points - that's why You shouldn't ever compare cameras only on paper

Ive always considered the 7D overrated tho. I have yet to have a good experience using one. The fact that the AF was more than up to par with the D7000 was nice. The D300s has Af in a class of it's own...

'Comparing only on paper' would mean only comparing spec sheets. Which would be extremely silly, wouldn't it.

fishnose - is your intent with your original post to say that the Canon 7D is better than the D800, or are you pointing out the incredulous assetion by DPReview that the 7D is better? You seem to be subtly defending DPReview's assertions. What's the point?
