Helen: Don't take it personal. Everyone realizes you are just an employee and don't set store policy. People just don't like the policy, that's all. No one has been asking for a guaranteed delivery date or even an estimated delivery date; just some indication of how many people are ahead of them in line, that's all. You are welcome here. We are glad to have you. No one is criticizing you personally. Knowledge of policy, even one we don't like, is better than no knowledge at all.

Actually, I think plenty of people would rather wait than run around on a camera hunt if they learn there are just a hundred or so people ahead of them but if there are thousands ahead of them some people would like to know that so they can start the search elsewhere, especially if they have an important shoot scheduled in the next few months. That's all. It is no big deal.

So what really is the big risk if Adorama told people their place in line and where Adorama was in filling orders? You say the information would be meaningless because many preorders ahead of that person may be cancelled. That isn't a negative, the person just gets their camera earlier than they expected. That is good, not bad. All cancellations can do is speed up the process, not delay it. The only reason I see for you to keep this information "secret" is to try to keep people from shopping elsewhere when they realize there are thousands of people ahead of them. That is what I mean by "hostage." Adorama is trying to hold on to future sales by denying people knowledge it has and can easily share. It is their "Adorama first" policy rather than a "customer first" policy that is the reason for the criticism Adorama has been getting. No one expects you to be able to change it. You just work there. But likewise there is nothing wrong with some of us criticizing Adorama for this policy.

I agree with this policy issue here. Someone could have an important assignment and need to know when will they get the camera. The policy holding customer as hostage should be dropped. the problem is that we dont have a law state that these companies has to tell customer the place in line. Maybe this is a good learning experience. We should contact the law makers to make a new law about this kind situation, and we can make a difference.

@ Kevin Pan: I completely disagree with that.

I'm on record here as being against Adorama's policy, and against the moderators' deletion of contact info in the e-mail. I stand by that. But businesses have to be able to conduct business as they see fit, and forum moderators need to be able to moderate forums using their judgment. As clients and as posters we have the right to object politely. We have the right to take our business and our opinions elsewhere.

And we have the right to petition lawmakers to change laws--but just because we have the right to do something doesn't mean we should. Adorama gives a lot of people good service; those people are only cutting off their noses to spite their faces if they leave. I get a ton of good info from this forum and if I choose not to participate here anymore it would surely be my loss.

It's my opinion that passing a law forcing businesses to be more transparent would actually have more undesirable effects than good ones. Businesses don't need more regulation. Lots of us are frustrated here, I understand that. But if the people on Adorama's list really want the policy change, they should take it up with Adorama--not with their congressman.

And you, Mr. Pan, have every right to disaghree with me :)

Considering that many people in the world are struggling for food, shelter, clothing, jobs, paying the bills, etc., we sure do have some luxurious problems waiting for a $3,000-3,300 D800/E or a $6,000 D4 to show up.

We have more than enough laws on the books in the United States. The US Tax code alone is more than 700,000 pages, what a travesty! No citizen can be expected to figure out that law. The US tax code has become welfare for accountants.

People think every time there is a "problem" or some "injustice" a new law should be passed "to take care of it." I say leave people alone as much as possible. Leave businesses alone as much as possible. Let the marketplace work as much as possible. A bad policy can be just that, a bad policy. It doesn't have to become an illegal act because some law was passed to "correct the injustice."

I ordered my D4 from Adorama within 45 minutes of the link going live the first day. I just got my notice that my camera has shipped. Hopefully this means they got a big shipment and can fulfill a large number of orders. Looking forward to the arrival! Good luck to everyone else on the list!

I pre ordered the D4 early on the 1st day from Adorama. I just received (at 11:20am PST) a shipping notice with tracking info. I am not NPS.
Good luck to everyone else on getting their camera soon.

This is a good news. now at least we know that the the order is rolling to non NPS / not neighborhood of Adorama. that means, our time will be turned soonest... I wish that the others order before me who got confirmation from other store, who got good relationship from other store and who found out that other store is greater than Adorama should cancel their preorder and the number before me will become less...

Thanks to everyone for this news. Placed my order on Jan 9th. I also can't blame the retail vendors. Nikon got slammed at the Sendai plant and then the Thai operations got slammed too. Between the earthquake/tsunami and the increasingly rising Thai monsoon floods, everything got clogged in the pipeline. Nevertheless, it would be nice to know where, exactly, I am on the list. But at least now that other non-NPS people are getting theirs, I can wait a little longer . . . difficult as that may be.

Just received my D4. It did include the 16GB Sony XQD card and card reader.
Serial Number is in the late 21xxx series

If enough other serial numbers are collected, maybe an idea of US run rate can be estimated.

    Again good luck everyone.

I've been following this forum for months, as many users with pre-orders have. I pre-ordered within the first hour of it being available (8:07 am PST). Adorama had pre-authorized my card 4 times over the last few months and they all came and went without an update to my "pending" status. Last friday, yet another authorizarion charge had fallen off and I had honestly given up hope. Then all of a sudden this Monday, I got an update email from Adorama. Turned out that 4 of 5 items were available and being held... Until my D4 arrived. It was like insult to injury... So I called Adorama and told them to ship all my other items. I didn't even bother asking about the status of my D4. Later in the day I received an email that the items had shipped... Yippee I said to myself (sarcastically). Then, later in the day, I received another update, that there was a second shipment. Out of no where, my D4 shipped! But get this, they actually even overnighted my shipment on Monday and I received it late in the West Coast on Tuesday. In fact, the D4 arrived a day before the other items. Anyway, just want to let folks know that D4s are coming and Adorama really came through! I too was in the same state of limbo and then bam... It all happened within a few hours!

    Good luck everyone!

    Hi all,
I would like to report that my D4 order with Adorama has shipped. I placed my order on Jan. 6 at 8:10 am EST. Good luck everyone!

Second, I was the third post in this thread and I have a few comments about what has happened since then. I realize that I am playing in someones else's sandbox here and if they feel it is right to censor the information provided to me by Adorama then I guess it is their rules because it is their sandbox.

What I do not agree with is when someone states "the US law says...." If you are going to pull that card out then back it up by citing the Federal Law you are referring to. To the best of my knowledge no such law exists. It would go against the capitalist society we say we are. In business there are "business relationships" information and knowledge gets passed on with relationships. That is why some camera stores have differing inventory levels and preference with certain vendors. This is a two way street, we all know some stores that get the latest and greatest before similar shops. It just is that way for any number of reasons but there is no law that says what people have stated as fact here.

The policy of not telling people where they stand in line as pointed out before by others is the reason for this thread and, the reason for the game of placing pre orders at multiple vendors. I have learned a-lot from this experience and I will be a better consumer the next time. Yes, I do vote with my dollars and where I spend them.

Good luck to those still waiting I hope I and others here have provided you with the information to help you make a good, informed decision on how and where to spend your hard earned money.

Thanks gan106 for starting this topic and to everyone else who has posted their Adorama order date/times. I especially appreciate the people who have reported their shipping notices. My heart leaps up when I behold the news! I ordered January 6, 2012 9:33:59 AM PST. As a left coaster, I was a little slow on the trigger.

Just as I posted my message, an email blast came from Adorama. Very likely this discussion prompted the following:

    ...............

Thank you for placing your order for a Nikon D800/D800E or D4 with us.

As you know, the Nikon D800/D800E and D4 are currently highly-sought after. The excitement for the these new acclaimed models created a demand that has currently outstripped supply worldwide. Nikon has sent us initial quantities of units and continues to do so on a weekly basis. Those have already been shipped out to customers in a first-in/first-out process.

We are fully aware of how eager you are to receive your new camera and how frustrating the wait can be. The lack of clear forthcoming information as to the estimated ship dates only adds to the frustration. We know it and feel it and we're going bonkers about it. Nothing is more important to us than to deliver a great customer experience, and while it might not be evident, we're turning the world over to get these hot cameras out to you as fast as humanly possible. We are working closely with our partner, Nikon, to get all orders fulfilled in a timely basis and to hopefully meet your expectations to the extent possible.

We promise you that as these cameras roll into our warehouse, they won't linger for even a moment. They will be packed and shipped same-day on a strict first-in/first-out basis.

Be assured you that we don't charge your credit card until the order ships.

Customers have been asking our customer service and sales personnel questions like: How many units we have on order? How many we have on hold? Where a particular customer is on the waiting list? Please understand that they do not have access to this information. In spite of their genuine desire to be of help, they cannot possibly share information not available to them. We are unable to make this information widely available internally at this time.

We fully understand your excitement to get this new Nikon DSLR in your hands, and we deeply regret the inconvenience the wait is causing. We are working diligently and hard (sweating actually!!!) to get it in your hands as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding and support. We know you placed your trust in Adorama. We are working hard to continue to earn your trust.

    Sincerely,

    Adorama Camera

Yes, I just got the same message and kudos to Adorama for sending it. I hope our discussion here helped them better understand the level of angst and frustration among those of us who are waiting for our orders to be fulfilled in the absence of any specific information. Just knowing that Adorama finally "gets it" has made me feel a lot better about them.

My thanks again to all who have participated and especially those who are posting here when they receive the notice from Adorama that their D4 is on the way. It makes me feel a whole lot better to know they are shipping (when they can) and hope it helps all of you as well. I ordered later in the day on Jan 6th (EST) and will certainly let you know when I receive my notice.

    Patiently waiting.....

Adorama trying to play nice; but read carefully.

They only say the customer service and sales representatives don't know your place in line. We all knew that anyway. But we all also know Adorama could let customer service people have access to this information and they refuse to do so. Adorama could have put your place in line in the e-mail they sent you but they did not. The nice e-mail doesn't explain why. Why cannot you know if there are 100 or 1,000 people in line ahead of you? You are an adult and can make whatever use of that information you desire. You may elect to go looking for a camera elsewhere and with some effort you may just find one sitting on a shelf in some camera store. Adorama never explains why they cannot let you have that choice based upon information they have. I think it is just greed. They want you to keep thinking there are only a few people ahead of you so you don't go out and buy elsewhere.

Adorama first; customers second. Nothing changed by that e-mail, is there?

I ordered mine from Adorama when they were announced and received it a couple weeks ago. I'm not a Nikon Professional. Be patient, there's obviously a great demand. Adorama (and others) are at the mercy of Nikon.

OK, this may irritate some folks, but, I really think the very first D4 bodies may have some issues which NIKON has corrected in later production runs. Mine, a fairly low number, has dirt and other spots on the sensor, and these are no doubt from birth. It will be interesting to see how the very latest bodies look when one shoots a cloudless sky and processes ti to maximum contrast to see what is on the sensor. See this page and Mike's processing of my image http://nikonrumors.com/forum/topic.php?id=5517&page=4

So, maybe if it helps, the wait will bring D4 bodies which are a bit more clean....

    @donaldejose
    Nikon D4 Orders at Adorama
In my opinion the policy of not advising customers where they are in line has little to do with any anxiety that customers on the Adorama pre-order list might go looking elsewhere if they felt they were too far down the list.

It is significantly more complex than that, in that our relationships with manufacturers and distributors are affected by much more than simply access to products.

There are issues which we are simply not able to release into the public domain; if we were able to know with 100% certainty that information given to any single customer about his or her place in line would not be shared in any public space we likely would be able to share far more with individual customers.

Helen: Thanks for posting. We do appreciated your presence. People here have posted that they are number X in line at Y camera store. The store told them that. Didn't seem to cause that store any problems with Nikon. I guess I will just never be able to understand why someone posting their place in line causes any problem for you and you will never be able to explain it because your reasons are too complex to share with us. Adorama's policy may be correct Helen; but they are going to take some heat for it if they cannot explain it. That's all.

I have a fair question to Adorama, Do D800e haven't much preorder? I have a friend who order from Adorama on 08 May 2012 and guess what? his status is Shipped. will receive the camera on 16 May 2012 with tracking number. Yes he is a lucky guy but what about the others who ordered before him? unfair i think. though such news for him is beneficial to me also, we can use the camera on our photoshoot together.

    @Kalog

It is indeed a fair question; our policy is to only ship orders out to customers in the order of receipt. If you feel that this policy has been breached in any way, please email me directly: Helen@adorama.com with additional details including your friend’s order number, and the order number plus the email address and order number of any customer who placed his order earlier. I will certainly give it my immediate attention.

    @donaldejose

The terms and conditions set in place between Adorama and our suppliers are not going to be identical to those between other retailers and suppliers (they won’t even necessarily be comparable to our biggest competitors). This isn’t restricted to the photography business. Think about other big names and, for example, their returns policies; are Costco, Nordstrum, Zappos and LL Bean really swallowing the costs of their generous policies themselves – or are they able to negotiate terms which allow them to do so?
