    Hi,

I was hoping somebody could help me with a problem i have.

When i bought my D700 Nikon had a promotion where i got a boxed retail copy of Capture NX2 with it, I installed it on my Mac and used it for a few months, but ended up sticking with Lightroom and CS5.

I was having a bit of a clear out and found the NX2 box and disks and was wondering if I could sell them as I don't need them. I've been hunting online regarding if I have to deregister or deactivate the software before someone else can use it, as i'm not sure how Nikon works regarding the serial numbers.

    Thanks for reading,

    Julie

    Mmmm Reding the smallprint :
The software remains property of Nikon.
Rights are non transferable, so it might be illegal to sell the software..

this is standard for almost all commercially available software .....

Thanks for the info, do you think it would be OK to give it to someone for free?, its a shame that its not being used.

Not sure if it will activate/register , since you already activated / registerred it on your name / PC as i understand ?

As far as i'm aware , you cannot reverse the activation / registration at Nikon's...

I'm pretty sure you can activate it on another computer - what if you bought a new computer and wanted to transfer the software to that?

    But as I don't have Capture NX2, I can't say for sure.

It is relatively easy to install Nikon software without the correct activation, but this is not the forum for that discussion.

You can do whatever you want. Nikon is not going to come after you for selling used equipment and an old software package. If you were trying to sell copies of the software, that is bad but not if it is the original copy.

I sold an old D80 with NX2 and the person has been using it for 2 years and no issues.

Absolutely! I recently bought someone's secondhand copy, with no problems. When you uninstall the program from your computer it will automatically allow the new user to regiister it on theirs. You don't even need to give them ANY of the original packaging or disks, all they need is a copy of the long alpha numeric product key (you could even type this into an email) and they can download the latest version of the software itself free from Nikon's website. ALL YOU'R SELLING IS THAT PRODUCT KEY, which turns the free trial download into a permanently licenced copy.

So if I simply uninstall the Nikon Capture NX2 software before selling, the key code is "de-registered" and available to the new user?

Yes absolutely, as I said before, the software and user manual are available free to download from the Nikon website, the only thing of value is the product key that makes the free trial version of software, a fully permanent licensed copy. As you say, uninstalling it automatically allows this key to be used again on another machine.

Actually you don't even have to do that. I have my NX2 installed on 3 machines, and 2 others and never uninstalled it. No one tracks software that closely that comes free with a purchase.

You can just sell it right now; you do not need to uninstall it or anything. It's not like they're using DRM like for most video games.
