Are you sure about that output? It doesn't seem right to me. Why not buy a flip HD camcorder for $200 bucks. It will give you way better quality then what you want to jury-rig with the D300. Or just buy the canon 5DmkII already if you are in such a hurry. It's got everything you want NOW. Just put a Nikon sticker over canon and nobody will notice :^)

Yeah, sure. While you're at it put on a D700X sticker and tell everybody you're testing the new prototype...

D300 vs Flip HD? Are you kidding?

I just wrote that I need the DOF and the focal length.

To me, these 2 worth more than resolution. For what I have to do now, miniDV resolution is enough, HD would be luxury (luxury that I would enjoy)

I can afford to wait for the next Nikon announcement.

    If the D3s or D700s doesn't offer serious video, it's gonna be the 5D mk2 + 16-35 ƒ/2.8...

I wonder if that new cheap weird branded 14mm ƒ/2.8 would perform good on the 5D mk2... I might try that.

    Of course I'd prefer the D700s + 14-24 combo.

Or you could always get a Nikon to Canon mount if you decide to go with the 5D. Not sure how that would work, but it would allow you to use the Nikkor 14-24.

Seriously, though, I think the DOF is totally worth it. I recently watched a movie that was shot on film and it was beautiful.

I was referring to the 1280x720p HD video from a flip versus the 640x426 you'd get from a jury-rigged D300. If DOF is what you need then get a used D90 or hell even a D5000. Isn't your class going to be over by the time the next "D700" becomes available in the Fall?

Somehow I feel like no matter what Nikon announces on the next "S" model, your still not going to be happy :^(

This present class for which I need to deliver minidv stuff (aka the D300's 640x426 will be enough) will be over and I'm gonna be planning using a possible D700x for the next class.

Don't worry. I'm very happy with my D300 when it comes to taking pictures, only complaint would be that I can't have a 14mm equivalent and I like FX, but that would be luxury.

If the D700x comes with full hd video with manual control over it, I'll be more than happy. If they don't announce what I want, I'm going to sell my Nikon gear and go with the 5D mk2. I can wait about 4-5 more months for an announcement... I'd like it to be today but I can wait.
