    Hi,

As some of you might know, I'm waiting for a D700x mostly for its professional video features. But right now I shoot a D300 and I'd like to use it for video even if the resolution will be the liveview resolution.

I found on nikon rumors a few windows applications that does that (record liveview feed of a connected camera via usb) but I'm more on OS X so I'd like to know if there's a way I can do so.

I found StudioTether which is a nice way to control my D300 on os x and the dev claims that he's working on video as well. but I can't really wait (If I could wait... I'd be waiting for the D700x, actually, I'm already waiting for it)

So, StudioTether is really great and the guy who makes it also makes a device to capture your screen... so yeah I can "film" with this but it's far from optimal.

A D300 firmware hack to turn it into a D300s would be awesome.. but that's a dream. (or is it?)

    Thanks

Why are you in such a hurry again? Just sell your D300 and get the 5D already. The D300 video hack has been around a long time. Not sure why you'd go through the trouble of hacking it, other than for fun. You don't have sound with it and the I don't think it's HD video either.

Give me all of your lenses when you buy the 5D :^)

Don't you think it's funny that my rank on the "other" forum is now a 40D :^) Ha Ha Ha. I'm such a loser :^( But that's OK because I'm still winning the "Last post wins" thread! LOL.

LOL congrats on the last post wins thread.

Well, I don't need sound and for this project, the low resolution is alright, but yeah maybe I should get the 5D mk2.

But then what if in like 3-4 months the D700x is out.

This is not just a possible 5D mk2 vs 5D mk3 debate or maybe a D300 vs D300s debate (excluding the video here) It's about changing my whole system, selling all my lenses and saying goodbye to a possible 14-24 (that would be my everyday lens, I'm 100% sure of that) I'm waiting because I'm already with Nikon and I kinda like their cameras.

Also, I might get access to a nice employee rebate in a few months, that also plays in when considering the 5D mk2 today.

    Stop tempting me!

"I kinda like their cameras"?! Where do you live again so I can go and personally bitch slap you, in a friendly way of course :^) lol

GET THE canon JBL! DO IT! DO IT! I Double Dog Dare You!!! But you'll be sorry when the D700 gets updated, maybe.

I'm totally gonna wait for the D700 update announcement. I don't want to buy a 5D2 if the D700 update is better.

And I need video asap because I got this video class and I don't want to use their shitty cameras. Considering the whole class is based on miniDV, I wouldn't mind the D300's liveview low res. To me, DOF and focal length means much more.

Here's what I would do if I needed video:

Connect my D300 through the video out to some sort of portable recorder that accepts a video input (we have something like that, it's made by Sony and uses MiniDV tapes). Then record it on a MiniDV tape or whatever the recorder uses. It may be big, but just chuck it in a bag and hope the cable's long enough.

Please don't go to Canon, just for some measly little video feature. I'd rather use the new iPod Nano than a 5D anyday.

Let him go if you wants to Alpha. It will learn him. A camera is just a tool. Besides, I'm sure Jbl's videos will still suck with whatever he decides to get. Ha Ha,I'm just messing with ya jbl, at least your not editing your porn, I mean movies, with a dual VHS cassette deck :^)

    Your not right?!

    Hmm this is rather funny.

    1) Good idea alpha, I'll see if I can get my hands on one of these as if the footage goes on mini dv, it might works well with that class I'm taking.. could be an option, and I'm pretty sure they have that kind of tool there... however, It would be much easier for me to use the D300 with a windows machine.. I have the possibility to do so, it's just that I'd prefer to do so on mac.

Niko: you do know that I won't give you my lenses right?

Also, I make art videos and I do believe that it's better than junk/family footage

I never did video editing with VHS decks but I did edit porn as a job in the past, that makes your comment quite funny.

    For now here's my plan:

Use D300 + winXP with nkvid until StudioTether allows me to record that footage on OS X... all that until Nikon announces the D700x/D700s. That I will or will not buy. The day it gets announced, I either preorder it or order a Canon 5D mark II.

alphanikonrex - this machine looks older than You :)

jbl - some examples of You past work please (alphanikonrex, don't read this part.... I said, don't read this part)

niko - what's the next rank? I like this ranking system, but the question is, do You get it on quality or quantity issues?

Adamz, posting links would mean posting NSFW links so I won't do it. If you're looking for porn I'm sure you can find some by yourself and that you don't need to know if I did the editing or not :)

Also, thae ranks on Canon Rumors Forums are given based on quality, that's why they have threads where you can spam and the last post is winning...

and after the 40D comes the 50D.

Well, over there it takes about 3 posts to upgrade from one rank to another for the first 10ish ranks lol so you'd be at the D100 or something..

but really here's the structure (that I made myself since admin didn't want to tell me)

    The list so far:

    0: Beginner
    1: Kodak DCS 650
    2-4: Canon EOS D30
    5-9: Canon EOS D60
    10-14: Canon 1000D
    15-24: Canon 300D
    25-34: Canon 350D
    35-49: Canon 400D (progress: 10%)
    50-74: Canon 450D
    75-99: Canon 500D
    100-149: Canon 10D
    150-249: Canon 20D
    250-499: Canon 30D (progress 33%)
    500-?: Canon 40D

    750-?: Canon 50D (guess)
    1000-?: Canon 60D/7D (guess)
    1500-?: Canon 5D or something..

Anyway... it would be fun if this forum got updated.. We really need the reply, quote options.. post count would be nice.. ranks aren't needed tho.

jbl ONLY "edits" the end credits of his "movies". Right jbl ?! ;^)
Now we all know why he is in such a hurry to get a D700S/X.

Hey jbl did you see that metal band video with the 5DmkII on the other rumors site? I hope you can do better then that :^)

And NSX, the ranks are for another forum.

As I wrote in some other thread, I was playing with d300s yesterday and also managed to record couple of seconds, and unfortunately the jelly effect is still there. The af works a little bit better than on d90, but still MF is much faster and accurate.

MF is the way to go with video. You want that smooth transition from delicious bokeh to razor blade sharpness.

But back to the main topic,

I'm still looking for a way to record the live view feed from the D300 to a computer with OS X.

The only way I found so far is via live view tethering and screen capture, but the quality of the screen capture is low, the process require 2 softwares (which asks for more resource on the machine) and requires more post production to recrop to the image size and delete the unused screen capture part. These 3 factors makes it a no go (mostly the low quality video part)

I've got an option for winXP that works just enough (sometimes, some weird procedure makes the recorded file corrupted... so you gotta make sure you use the thingny as intended)

The output isn't going to be HD from liveview so why do you want to do it? A regular camcorder would give you better results.

The output would be 640 x 426, it's far from being HD but I can boost it fit in the 720 x 480 minidv standard without losing much quality.

Ideally I want to work with 1080p in order to stabilize my image in after effect and add some crop & pan and output in 720p.

Until I get my D700x that does 1080p with full manual video controls, I'll work with that low resolution... at least I get to use my wide angle lens (camcorders have like a 40mm wide end, this is ridiculous) and I get the amazing DOF (with my 20mm ƒ/1.8, it's very sexy)
