My first Nikon experience was the D7k, and I was very unsatisfied with the AF and metering...

Here's my wishlist for the D400:

DX - 18-24mp or FX 24mp with 12mp DX mode
Native iso 100-12800 with D4 auto iso features (FL info)
    7-9fps
    D4 AF
    D300s body/build
    1080p @24/30 and 720p @60
In camera HDR with alignment (hell even my cellphone has that)
    Full CLS features

    Fantasy add-on:

Hybrid AF similiar to V1, allowing fulltime (fast) AF during video recording.

I understand most people like to create HDR's in post. But it's a nice quick way to grab a shot in a hurry. I'm not talking about the overlydone cartoonish HDR's. Besides, that's software, so it won't take up camera real estate or cost anythig really.

I agree, in camera HDR in software costs nothing once you have developed it for one camera and it should be a standard feature to increase dynamic range when needed.

    Same as D300s but with:
    - 14 mp
    - ISO up to 25600 with useable 12800
    - up to 10 fps with grip
    - 1080p 30 fps video
    - same autofocus and metering system as in D4/D800
    - reasonably priced

I don't know which one is worse; wishing for a camera that hasn't been announced, or waiting for a camera that's been on backorder for 2 months. Both very agonizing.

Let's discuss this in the thread that's already been mentioned here.
