Yes Willis there are ladies on the forum and I'm sure they're not big fans of this topic. But actually the very first time I did a nude session, the model was a very chiseled guy and everyone, minus myself and three other guys, in the audience was female. About 15 girls showed up to the session that day. So the ladies do this kind of stuff too. They just call it "Human Form" photography. Only inexperienced guys call it "Nude" or "Playboy" photography. That's what I've noticed anyway.

It was funny that the chiseled male model made us fat guys in the room feel very uncomfortable that day. Well except for me since, you know, I've got a six pack set of abs myself. :^)

JMCS, honestly, I haven't looked into any schools, but since I'm in college now, I really don't have the time to work on that sort of thing.

How could I forget about macro photography!!! I've always wanted the 105mm 2.8. OMG, I'm crazy about prime lenses now!

And panerama photography as well. I'd like to do that, but I am scared of photoshop. :D

Just kidding, I bought Scott Kelby's CS2 book, but again, I haven't had time to read it yet.

By the way, is it bad that I bought the CS2 book? It is the version I own, but does the newer ones help me better? Or is the layout completely different?

Photoshop Creative Suite 4 is the latest version. It has a slightly different layout and more goodies to play with but CS2 is fine if all your doing is trying to improving your photos. Actually I'd suggest you get Lightroom with a student discount. It's easier and is specific for photography.

Unfortunately, the school doesn't offer Lightroom, they only have Photoshop CS4 of various versions from $199.95 up.

You can still buy online with a student discount. You just have submit a scanned picture of your validated student ID. Try ccvsoftware. I've purchased through them as an educator. Lightroom is "only" $99USD.

Just remember that this is an "For Educational Use Only" copy so you can't buy it and then go start up a business with it. Well your not suppose to anyway :^)

Let me just say that if your business can't generate the extra $200 to pay for it then you are just shooting educationally anyway.

Heck, even if you only get $1 for each picture you sell, you could knock that out in a day. No... I don't care that that last sentence didn't make any sense. I'm still bitter at Gentoo for dropping the KR bomb on me last week. So deal with it!

You'd be surprised at how much "education only" software ends up being used to make money. It's about profits Willis not ethics :^)

It seams that we have wondered of the subject of the post (again).
I do like nude as much as the next guy but what I would like to try, and have not tried already, is high budget high tech advertizing photo session (hefty part of the budget would be my fee of course).

Unless you know exactly what your doing, you wouldn't want to do it mb, Trust me big budgets bring big headaches and little room for error.

Become an assistant for a big budget session. You learn a great deal just by observing. Just don't forget your assisting and don't mooch off photos between takes! That always pisses me off! I think I'll slap my assistant now as soon as he walks in the door. That will learn him....Annie Leibovitz has nothing on me :^)

The photographer is just hired help. The art director is in charge of everything except the photographer's shortcomings. You'll own those.

I shoot macro (mostly insects) and wildlife (mostly birds).....never been a people photogapher...you don't have to get releases and they don't care what your images look like.Lately however I have been thinking about trying portrait work and have been reading as much as I can about lighting techniques with multiple strobes, softboxes,umbrellas,etc,etc.

@ shutterdancer : I am a bit like you .. the problem I find with portraiture and people shooting is the mode/mood you are in when you are photographing.. to me when I am doing my macro or land scape or birding.. I am feeing introverted .. and enjoying the hobby by my self... its a bit disconcerting when the subject talks back at you and needs some attention.. LOL!

Good luck shutterdancer. I now shoot mostly macro (flowers and insects), travel and landscapes and enjoy the introspective work.

Very, very different when you're working with a model for either portraiture or nudes. Portraits of men are fairly easy. If it's a corporate head shot, they just want you to show mercy and make them look relaxed. Women are much more difficult. Some don't like the way they look and will not like any picture. The only solution for this group is (if possible) not to show the picture for 5 years. Then when they see the pictures, they're looking at how they used to look, its usually better and they're pleased.

For portraiture in general I recommend a simple two or three light set-up to start (main, fill and maybe hair) for every shoot with both a plain light and plain dark background, then try more creative stuff. I'd also recommend shooting a lot, you never want to have to reshoot.

There are some cheap things you can add to your "studio" that are very handy - white bed sheets make good backdrops, can be hung across a bar and back-lit (for that great big softbox look you can't otherwise afford). If you are working on a tight budget, I would recommend getting a decent set of light stands (Manfrodo) along with clamps and a couple of reflectors. Sturdy, adjustable stands which last forever with cheap strobes is a better initial solution than crummy stands and expensive strobes.

I really want to try long exposures and really "play" with light. I need a tripod and I'm short on cash right now. As soon as I do I'll be posting all over here for tips. Hopefully I can borrow a friend's tripod soon.

heartyfisher...I am a card carrying introvert ;>),That's why I live in a rural area with a quarter mile dirt road snaking to my home.It is also nice to be able to go out my front or back door day or night and never know what critter I might see. (I shoot a lot of wildlife from the comfort of my porch.And here in the south,there is never a shortage of insects,reptiles,and wildflowers for macro work.

ted2001...Thank's for the portraiture tips.I understand the down side of portrait work,or maybe I just think that I do LOL,but after watching Nikon school "A Hands-on Guide to Creative Lighting" it really piqued my interest and there are a few light stands,a couple of more strobes,reflector kit,clamps and shoot through umbrellas sitting in my wish list at B&H as I type this ;)

As of today, one of the points on my list, pinhole solargraphy is in the process of being stuck off the not-done-yes list. Hopefully I will have something to show you guys when the winter solstice has passed.

What is strange there is the size of the hole. I was advised by people who have done this several times, to take a pane of glass and put the tin foil on it. Then take a needle and start milling the hole by rolling the needle between your fingers. Now comes the tricky part, you need to do the same from the other side and it is possible that you ruin a couple of sheets of tin foil. This is if the camera is a film pot. With a beer can the hole may be a bit larger.
The medium should be semi matte photo paper. For some reason bromide paper was not advised.

I can talk from experience only in three months :)

I haven't tried solargaphy but I have done lots of pinhole photography. I also "convert" my DSLRs for use with a pinhole "lens". If you ever want to see how dirty your sensor really is, give it a try.

Aah ... forgot ... use a magnifying glass to check the result against a light source, the milled hole should be nice and round.

The winter solargraphy didn't really work out.
I installed new cameras (made of beercans) around Christmas and will take them down at midsummer. However I did put up two cans at home some time in the beginning of march and took them down today.

Actually, I did take down one at the end of April. This was in a small spray can top. I had to work on it a lot to get some kind of an image.

Now on to the ones that I took down today. One that was in a small film cartridge, I had to throw out as there wasn't anything one could really make out of it. However the next one, a beer can, that I took down was a different story. Here I had to increase the contrast, set a white point and reduce saturation that went up with contrast.

The third one wasn't facing the sun and the image itself looked the best. By the looks of it, even the grass has produced some green even though it is BW paper :D With this one I only set a new white point and increased contrast, the shot itself was quite nice.
