Is there any advantage with using a DX crop on a FX camera (with an FX lens), as opposed to shooting at FX and manually cropping?

Well, the initial file size with the smaller size image will be obviously smaller. When shooting, the buffer will also have less data to record in DX. This is only a thought. I may be incorrect, but it seems self evident.

Maybe a more important consideration is in some action photos where it may be difficult to get the subject into the frame. The "DX" image could be at one side or another of the FX frame in that case.

And of course, special effects can be done with DX lenses on FX.

Having AF that covers the entire frame can be a nice touch. I don't personally find myself setting focus at the edge of my frame, but I keep reading that people ask for this. Perhaps its because my D40 has a crap AF system in the first place. Of course, its the same coverage you would get shooting FX w/ crop, but psychologically, it might be easier to frame your picture w/ the guides in the view finder.

When the D800 arrives, I don't imagine we'll use the DX crop mode for anything other than shooting with some of our old DX lenses that I don't have an FX equivalent for. (i.e. my Tokina 11-16mm & the 18-200).

That's the awesome thing about the D800 is that even in crop mode it has more resolution than my D90. It's like 2 cameras in one!

I think for the D800, file size might be an issue in some situations. If you've got a full day of tourism/hiking/whatever ahead of you and a definite preference for editing RAW over jpeg, you might want to put the camera into a crop mode just so you won't run out of card space by the end of the day.

I don't have my D800 yet, but I suspect when I do, I'll stick with the 24 megapixel, 1.2 crop for casual day-to-day shooting quite often. Memory cards are comparatively cheap these days, so maybe it won't be an issue, but I'd rather be cautious and have fewer pixels than run out of space part way through my first day in some exotic and beautiful place I'll never be again.

I just don't understand anyone thinking of buying a FX camera then believing they will use DX crop mode enough to warrant it a decision point. To me that just means someone "wants" the stigma of a FX camera but really only needs DX. If you need the extra reach and do not want to spend the $ on glass, DX is it. If the next DX sensors are 24mp, it will out resolve the FX sensors.

If Nikon hurries the hell up and announces the D400 I think most needs will be more than covered. The distance between FX and DX with high ISO is smaller due to the D800 being the "resolution" camera. So the cost choice of High iso DX (d400) vs FX (d4) will be close to $3,000.

i would use DX in these situations :

    1. i have some DX lens and i need to put them in use at certain time.
2.Im running out of memory card and i know i will take many pictures.
    3. I have DX elens and i am running out of memory card.
    4. when i do comparison test between d800 DX mode VS D7000.
    5. when i am out of my mind .

Just makes me think...(tongue in cheek)

-Unless you have a second DX body that was smashed when you were using both - why own DX lenses for more than a few months after buying FX?
-To spend $3,000 for a camera and not have enough memory cards? Mmmm...
-Running out of space - switch to jpeg - you get more resolution - delete some photos.
    -Comparison test - done once

So many people Want FX just to have it or they are suppose to want it. That was the argument 4 years ago - Technology has become better and we haven't seen the new DX sensors yet. I say wait to see what comes - it will not be much longer now.
