I am planning on buying a new lens or two with a D300s. The three I'm most interested in (ok, idiosyncratic) are the 85/1.4, the 300/4 and the 200/4 macro. It then struck me that the 85 dates back to the mid-90s, the 300 came out in 2000. All three lack VR. Further, the 200 and 300 seem generally unavailable and have been for quite some time.

Anyone have any news or insights?

My 300F4 is actually the even older version. The AF-D version. It lacks VR but believe me, if you were able to get to AF-S version, you would not be disappointed. Basically they have the same glass just in different housing so to speak. I shoot handheld all the time with that lens and I get good results. If you can't find one try ebay.

Or you can try a place in San Diego that has on online store:

I agree about the 300/4's optical excellence, that's why I want the optics. I also don't want to carry or pay for the 300/2.8, although it is one stop faster and has VR. I've got VR on lenses now and feel it is most useful at longer focal lengths.

All the other Nikon long primes have VR, so it's just a matter of time. I'm just not waiting patiently. Yes, I could buy it today, but I then couldn't afford to sell and re-buy it in the future when VR becomes available. The very excellence of the lens keeps me from other alternatives.

Just like with the 200/4 macro - I look at the Sigmas and Tamrons, but just feel it's smarter to wait on Nikon.

I hope that the lack of 300/4 in stores means that there's going to be a new 300/4 VR in near future, if not and You really need one go for the AF-S version, as it's faster than the regular one and You'll be able to sell it later for more money. If You decide to go for the 300/4 af-s get also the kirk collar replacement LINK
