Offered a D700 body like new for £700 but a question...

I'll try to keep this short so as not to bore everyone to death but a friend of a friend is selling a D700 body for £700. He wants a quick sale and lives in a different part of the country so I can't try it out with my lenses.

So my question is:

I have a D7000 and a handful of DX lenses. But I also have and use a 50mm 1:1.4D and a 85mm 1:1.4D which is my favourite lens of all. Moving to FX was never an option for me due to the cost but if I bought this camera I was thinking that my 50mm 1:1.4D and 85mm 1:1.4D lenses would give me superior pictures when on the D700. Also, it would be great having a full-frame option, for the advantages it gives. Can anyone who has a D7000 and a D700 tell me if the the two lenses I have will give improvements in picture quality that makes it worth spending the £700?

Actually, that wasn't short at all. Still, it shows how much some people are now selling the D700 for so might help as a guide to others in the secondhand market for one.

those are some very good lenses to have on a d700, and a very nice place to start. depending on what you shoot, they may be all you need.

as for better on a d700, well that will depend. they will be shorter, imo making them more useful. they will also have a shallower depth of field, as you will be closer to frame the same shot, than you would be with the d7000.

if you trust your friend, buy the camera. it is handy having a an FX camera and a DX backup.

I have both a d700 and d7000. Those lenses will work great on the d700. Just look around on flickr and see for yourself. If you buy the d700, you can always sell it again, perhaps for a profit.

do it! D700>D7000 when it comes to above 640 ISO....those lenses will be fine in the interim, and it pains me to that price, as I just bought a new D700 for $2100 USD!

Thought I might keep the thread going for a short while with tales of my missed opportunities and current secondhand prices. Now I want one really badly! So, I saw one on Gumtree in Leeds for £800 with battery grip and two spare batteries. Missed that by hours apparently. There's also one for sale on the Amazon UK market place for £717 though you have to do a bit of Googling for it come up. Thing is, though it is being sold by someone in the UK (like me) when I go to buy it Amazon tells me that they won't ship to the UK!!??.

I don't know if you are allowed to post links here but I can post the link to that Amazon uk one if anyone not in the UK fancies having a go at buying it for themselves...

Amazon UK now for the D7000 for £820 and Nikon given £80 cashback. Is £740 as low as the D7000 is likely to go in the coming months?

Actually this thread might prove more useful to everyone than I thought.

just had an email from the Amazon vendor. I emailed the company asking why I couldn't buy through Amazon as there is an email address posted with the ad.

Just received this reply:

'Hello,
The Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera Body Only is new, UK model, (it's an displayed model, not used and is as good as new it just had to be listed as 'used' as the box has been opened. The camera is in new condition, only exposed, not used), comes with 12 months Nikon warranty, receipt, all manufacturer supplied accessories. The total price is £717.00 including all shipping taxes.If you want to buy send me your phone number,full name and address and i will contact Amazon asap to process your order. Despatch is by normal Royal Mail services which takes 1-3 days depending on where in the UK you are.My return policy is full money back in 14 days.

I then went back to the Amazon ad and the camera has been removed. So basically this company (SMKW INC) is trying to sell me the camera off site. Phoned Amazon and they of course confirmed my suspicions. A scam...

Apparently high priced camera gear is a breeding ground for scammers on Amazon. The home base is often Nigeria. You'll find various info sources if you Google search using simple terms like "scam", "nigeria", and "amazon."

A year ago after I'd decided to sell my Nikon 16-85mm lens I listed it on Amazon Marketplace. Within a day I got an e-mail through Amazon Marketplace from a buyer asking me to send pictures of the lens to his personal e-mail address. I was excited to sell it so I took a few shots and e-mailed the pics to him. (That's he he got my personal e-mail address).

The next day I get a personal e-mail stating that the lens had sold and I should go ahead an package it and send it to the address given in the e-mail. What made this convincing is that the e-mail looked extremely official, like it was sent straight from Amazon dot com - logos, colors, fonts, layout, everything looked official. I was very excited so I packeged the lens up and was ready to head out. THEN, I decided to go onto the Amazon website to make sure I was doing this correctly since it was my first time and discovered that my lens was still listed as available.

Confused, I called Amazon and told them of the recent transactions and the representative said that if the e-mail didn't come directly through Amazon Marketplace then it's most likely not real and that my lens still hasen't sold.

I reeled off an e-mail to this "buyer" basically telling him to either buy the lens through Amazon Marketplace or "take your scam somewhere else." Never heard from him again. Close call as I was about to lose a $600 lens.

Best thing was 2 days later I got a real buyer and sold it.

I will definately pass this on to my kids. Be very aware.

Yes, he has my email address. Now, if I had gone and said "Yes, proceed" I would no doubt have received an official looking email from 'Amazon' asking for the money and details to process my order and maybe a link to an official-looking Amazon site to log into.

I think I would have known at this point as I have all my passwords stored in an app called 1Password and this would not have allowed me to go to a site that wasn't the legitimate Amazon site. Hopefully! Anyway, I am pretty hot on this stuff now after paying the company Camerabox £200 for a lens that never materialised.

I saw on eBay a few weeks ago some guy selling a D3x for $1700.

Not sure if it was a scam, he took down the auction and said he had too many offers, and that if I was interested, I should give him my info and eBay would send me a procedure to complete transaction.

Seemed shady so I didnt go for it, too good to be true....ill always wonder.

Danny, that in a nutshell is exactly the same 'modus operandi'. Has to be. You advertise something. Take it down then offer it to a buyer saying she or he will receive a 'procedure from the company (substitute eBay/Amazon). I bet you then receive an email with a link to a bogus site or something and when you put in your log in details they will have them.
