NIKON D5000 - Image Review Delay Problem?

I recently purchased a used mint condition Nikon D5000, and everything seems to be working okay except as I familiarize myself with the camera, I noticed that every time I take a picture, there is a delay of a few seconds before the image appears on the screen.
It is not instantaneous.

In other words, I have Image Review on, I take the picture, then the screen lights a blank grey color for a few seconds, then the image appears. I tried turning ADR off, and using different SD cards but experience the same results.

Other DSLRs that I have used in the past, the image appears virtually instantaneously.

Is this normal behavior for the D5000 or has it developed a problem?

What speed SD card are you using? Maybe that is slowing it down.

Could it be that "Long Exp. Noise reduction" or "High Iso Noise Reduction" is switched on ? Those options take time to process the picture data..

Jeff and Dutch, thanks for your replies.

Long Exposure and High ISO Noise Reduction are both off.

I am using a SanDisk Extreme 4GB SDHC card. I even tried a basic Promaster 2GB SD card with the same result.

Are you recording RAW+JPEG? I usually only use RAW. never tried doing both at once.

No, just JPEG normal.

Two things I just noticed. If I remove the SD card, and shoot DEMO image, the image review is virtually instantaneous.

Secondly, if I reduce the image size from large to either Medium or Small, the Image Review is faster.

The interesting thing is that I am using a SanDisk Extreme SDHC card so I would have thought that the write speed would be faster for all size images but it seems that the write speed is predicated on the size of the JPEG Image as opposed to the type of card that I am using.

Do you agree?

I was thinking same thing. Maybe there is some weird setting the previous owner had (some sort of processing or something that is affecting the image o the card). Also have you tried reformatting the card with that camera? Or have you already done that?

I just tried mine...it takes about 2.5 seconds shooting RAW+jpg fine.

I also did a Two Button Reset plus a Hard Reset with the button in the SD card compartment. I have reformatted that Extreme Card three times.

But like I said earlier, when I reduce the size of the JPEG image from Large to Medium or Small, the time for the image to appear for review after pressing the shutter button went from 3s to about 1 or less.

I think image size affects the speed at which the camera writes the image to the card and the card processes it.

What do you think?

I found that when the Automatic Distortion Control is on, there is a delay of 3 seconds from the time I snap the shutter to when the image appears in the display for review. This is for me when JPEG is set to Large and Fine.

When I turn ADC off, the image displays almost instantaneously in about 1s.

I think this was my problem. Try turning it off in your d5000 and see if it improves the timing.
