What is up about the D700 body only demand? Is it really in such demand that the price has gone up? The Nikon Store appears to have them available, however, unable to ship before April 4 due to maintenance. B&H says temporarily out of stock.

Supply and demand Chuckcars, supply and demand. I have absolutely no desire to change my 700 for an 800, I doesn't offer anything I need (sure I wish the 700 had twin card slots for backup purposes) the cost to change the camera/grip/batteries simply can not be justified for my type of photography, and by the looks of things I'm not alone.

I for one want to get into some FF shots, but I dont need the MP or much of the features that the d800 offers, and while I'm sure id love a d800 if i had one, i think the d700 more than suits my needs, so when i do upgrade from my d300, i think id probably get a d700. the 800 dollar price difference for me would help me get a lense i dont have.

Price drop? Now they are new what used were going for...if someone had been waiting to go FX it is still an awesome camera.

I concur. The D800 is an awesome camera, FX/DX all in one attraction is very strong. But the monetary loss in selling my D300s, battery grip and extra battery. Then buying the body/gripD800 means the overall cost/loss is getting near $4,500 for me. Plus I would need to buy fastest and huge memory cards too. Considering I'm a hobby photographer I can't justify it. Not that having the very top rated DSLR on Dxo Labs would be a bad thing. So all those thinking of buying the D800 you can have my body ;-), enjoy it.

D800 prices will surely level out and drop to $2699 once the initial hype is gone...
I ended up buying a new D700 in the process (after selling mine waiting for the D800), because I was so far away from getting the D800 on the waiting list and had shoots all April-June.

Price for entry into a D700 is great right now, and I managed to get a grip/mh-21 charger/enel4a for $285 - when my D4 eventually comes in, it'll be an awesome backup camera.

I'm a wedding photog, so that's why I'm "justifying" the upgrade.
