Does anyone know if the Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm Lens has a weather seal? If so, did it always have the weather seal or is this something that was added to the newer versions?
Also, would you consider this lens to be a good price at $200.00 new in todays market?
Weather seal? You mean the little rubber ring on the mount? I wouldn't really call it weather sealing but yes it's been there the whole time.
The 18-70 is a great lens and well worth more than $200 bucks. I would love it more if Nikon updated it with VRII :^) but it's still the best for the price!!!
Hi everybody, I just got back from vacation!
As it turns out, I used the 18-70 100% of the time while sightseeing, even though I had other lenses with me. The range fit my needs almost perfectly (it would be nice if it went to 16mm, or a 24mm equivalent).
I don't know if it's weather sealed, but I've gotten it pretty wet plenty of times. And if anything ever happened to it, I'd buy another, as $200 is a bargain.

I've used the 18-70 on both a D70 and a D300.
It's quite a durable lens, and has gone through quite a lot with me.
One time I got creative and lay down on the ground with this lens while photographing my sister dribbling a ball. Of course, she had to dribble the ball on the camera! Nothing was damaged (I had the hood on). In fact, I was so pleased with the result, I had her do it again!
I don't think it's sealed against dust or moisture. Not sure why the rubber ring is there. The lens clearly sucks in dust because of it's "accordion" design. True weather sealing only comes in a non expanding and properly sealed lens design.
