It seems my wish for an Amazon confirmation email didn't happen last night. So I'm curious if any shipment to local camera stores or electronic stores received any shipments last night. I'll be continuing the hunt this morning as well.
Any luck finding a D800 at your local store this morning?

I actually called around last night and found a store that had one in the warehouse, payed for it last night and picked it up this morning. I am so excited...
I would say do what I did. go to nikons website, search for the d800 then find authorized dealers in your area for that model and call them

Well went to BestBuy again today, and had some very helpful store clerk look through their entire Southern California stock database. He looked at all the stores in the area and there are none in stock. The only store in the area that has orders place right now is the Westminister Best Buy that will have two by the end of next week.
I rather just wait for my Amazon order if this is the case.

Yeah we're not getting in CT for awhile..BUT, they did say March 25th is the day, so I might consider going tomorrow morning for the f of it....
I got mine for $2850 at amazon, and with gift cards, I'm out $2715...if I go to my BB, it's going to be $3150.
I think I'll be fine with my engagement shoots this month using a D700....I don't need High-res for $400!

i'm telling you forget but buy, I wouldn't have thought this camera shop would have one but it was listed as an authorized dealer on Nikons webpage so....... yeah all the BestBuys around here were sold out too.

WooT! I just reserved one of the D800's they are getting next week. The girl said the other is spoken for already as well! Although I'm confused as to why they are getting a shipment next week if Nikon is closed for the next week. Maybe it was a slower shipment from Nikon from this previous week?

I walked in to the Best Buy about a mile from my house yesterday after reading some people finding and buying them on Thursday expecting them all to be gone if they had received them in the first place.
They had two, one for sale and the other I don't remember what he said about why it wouldn't be available to sell.
I've read all the reviews, watched as the rumors progressed and was blown away at the 3K price as I expected it to be 4k and 3k put it in range. I sold a handful of lenses (DX, including a 18-105, 35 1.8, Tokina 11-16 and a Tamron 17-50 2.8) netting me just under 1K and I can sell my D7K for about 800 body only so the upgrade cost me about $1,200.
Really, I just was weak and bought it :) I've taken about 100 test shots, learning the new controls coming from a D7K.
I've only put a few into Lightroom to view as many were true tests, feeling it out, etc...so were just deleted.
I can say, the dynamic range is greater than the .5 stops recorded by DXO BECAUSE (to me) of the extra detail record in the whites (highlights).
For example, clouds on a bright day that are against a blue sky with white and grey - on the D7K, the white has no detail - just white. This is because the D7K for whatever reason doesn't have the resolving capabilities to retain any detail in something like that. The D800 keeps it - similar to photos I've seen of the D700 (while it has less DR in the D700 than the D7K, there is more detail in the highlights). The D800 gives you the highlight detail and more DR. The gradations in color are just a little more smooth than the D7K.
Beautiful camera. Seems (to me) about 1 stop better on a pixel level than D7K and 1.5 stops better when downsized. Better than D3/D700, a little below the D3S & D4 (half stop?????).
Below ISO 400, there may not be anything better for the next couple of years.
If you want one now, call all the Best Buys within your acceptable driving distance. My pro camera store hasn't received any and if I wanted to buy locally, it would be at least 3 months (that's what they tell me).

can you post some test shots using a d800 and a fast lens, cropping away 2/3 of the image and show me DOF.

You realize you went from a DX camera (small cropped sensor) to a Full Frame camera right? Its a no brainier the D800 would blow away a measly D7K.
