If you have the money, the D800 is exceptional. However, the FPS is only 4 on the D800 and the D7000 has 6 FPS. And the crop factor of the DX sensor on the D7000 will give you the longer reach for sports.

You are the one who must decide if you want to stay with a cropped sensor, or if you want to go with the FX sensor on the D800. You may wish to shop some of the FX lenses, especially all the "pro" lenses before making a decision. Certainly if your D80 is working, you may wish to hang around the forum and do forum searches, read the posts and see what folks are saying. You can always ask questions on the existing threads and many answers will be given.

The change in format is a big one. So at present, waitng to see what Nikon is going to give us in a high end DX camera may be the best idea.

I know the D7000 just dropped in price but is the price likely to drop going into December or no more drops until replacement comes out? I'm looking to flip a 10-24 towards the d7000 and don't mind waiting a little while.

From my point of view and if I owned the lens several on this post do (which quite parallels what I have) my instinct would be to buy the D7000. The D600 is QUITE a bit more expensive and seems to be headed for the money pit problem. A REPLACEMENT for the D7000 is SOME ways out just based on Nikon NOT running interference on their D600. For what it is worth between a D400 or a D7100 I am going to predict that the D400 will come with a price tag which will INTIMIDATE. I can just see what the Nikon USA site will use for a buyline for the D400. Engineered to Amaze! Priced to Prove You Are Professional!
