If you shoot RAW+JPEG, and your JPEG setting is scaled down to medium, will it save the RAW at full resolution on one card, and the scaled down JPEG on the other, or does the RAW also get scaled down?
I'm thinking this might be the way to go on the D800 as I'll probably only want to bother with the full resolution files for the shots that are keepers.
RAW is RAW, no matter how You will set Your jpg's
adamz is correct. There is no such thing as compressed or scaled down RAW. RAW is RAW. That being said, you have the choice to save your images as just RAW or RAW+jpeg. You can then decide what compression of Jpeg you want, Sm, Med, Lg, (low, medium, high) etc. The D800 will allow you to split the files between cards. So you can chose to send the RAWs to one card and the Jpegs to another. Or you can just shoot jpeg without RAW.
It's dual, not duel, unless you expect your memory cards to be like Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. :D

Cool. I've never had the pixels to shoot at anything other than large, so I wasn't sure how that would work.

I don't "think" so. I think it begins life as a 12bit RAW file, where a 14bit file begins as a 14bit file.
I willing to be wrong, but it would seem that how the file's life 'starts' makes the difference.

As other noted only the jpeg is effected by the size selected. Only Canon provides options for smaller RAW files (sRAW).
Willis, to answer your question; it depends on how you set up your camera to handle the JPG and NEF file formats. As for the other information floating here, read your manuals.
Page 85 of the D3s users manual states that there are 3 types of raw settings available.
uncompressed, lossless compressed and compressed. Mike, you are correct on the bit depth of a file, its selectable either as 12 bit or 14 bit.
Read your manuals while you wait for the gear to arrive.

Hi guys (& gals), no, I understand the general point of Willis's original question, and the answer is YES you can adjust the size of the jpeg file and send it to the second card slot, without effecting the RAW file being recorded (I do this all the time), and YES Mike, I think you are right, a 12 bit NEF isn't a scaled down 14bit if originally taken as a 12. My problem comes with the statement "a RAW is a RAW", I don't think so, It seems to me as Treckie correctly says above, that just as you can choose the size of the jpeg being recorded, you also have several options when it comes to the RAW file/data, (none of which has anything to do with the OP's question so sorry for bringing it up :-)

I have read quite often that people always says to shoot Raw on the CF card and the rest (jpeg & video) on SDHC. Says now I have a 60mb/s CF card and have a 95mb/s SDHC card, does shooting Raw on CF still make sense? or the above statement was only valid because back in the days CF card was always the faster card?

I've never heard that suggestion JY, but it seems to make sense to send the most data to the fastest card.

Since the 95MB/s SDHC is less than half the price of the CF 90MB/s one I wonder if the CF card price gonna drop soon? Anyway, I know where my money is going.
I've just bought the 8GB version of the SD card you're looking at for my son. It was £19 Inc postage from HK on eBay. I also wonder why the now slower CF version is still expensive?

Since SD card is faster, i assume it is better? Why is slower CF card still so expensive? is there any performance between the two that makes the CF card more expensive? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

i called my cousin in law. He told me that the 95m/s SD card is relatively new, thats why it is faster than older 45m/s SD card. the speed of SD card is as fast as CF card for the same reason.
the price difference is really due to reliability capture the image and the material of the card itself. the issue about SD card is that its not as reliable as CF card and the design of smaller SD card is more likely to break than CF card.
when you are a professional and rely on your equipments to make money, it is better to use CF card. if you are just taking every day pictures and use a point shot camera, SD is good enough.
also, if you buy 3000 dollars d800 , it make sense to use 100 CF card. if you buy 200 dollars point shot, it also make sense to use 50 dollars SD card.
regard of which card you put your raw file, CF card is better for Raw since you wont worry about card error as much as SD. you rather put your Jpeg in SD card so if something happens in SD card, you still will have raw File in CF card.
at last, he says he would get CF card for nikon D800. look how much the camera worth, he would treat the camera with some nice cards.
