Hello to all. Just joined this forum. I've just placed an order for a Nikon D7000, upgrading from a D70, and gradually phasing out the use of my old Nikon film cameras. I've gone for the 35mm F1.8 prime lens to begin with, rather than a kit lens, figuring that 35 should equate to a 'normal' lens.

Just looking for any general tips, recommendation, gotachas, etc. And/or any general chat about the D7000, while I wait out the 4 weeks it's going to take to be delivered...

Congrats and welcome to the forum Fielding. You may like to add yourself to the map so we can see where you are from.

I would like to be p-exing my D90 for the D7000, but they are as rare as hens teeth at the moment in England so I may wait until the next version is announced then buy that.

Is the D7000 really back-ordered? You can get them off the shelf here in Texas.

Well, the D7000 is available here in small numbers. Last Friday, for instance, I nearly bought one from Amazon UK, where it was listed for £850, body only. NB. that's listed for sale direct from Amazon, not via an Amazon partner. By Saturday, that price had gone, and it was listed body only for around £1000. Currently, Amazon have none in stock. So it fluctuates.

I called into Jessops in Manchester on Saturday afternoon, a new, biggish branch. They had two D7000's in stock, but of course the in-store price is highly uncompetitive. And they wouldn't let me see one: "If we let you play with it it's classed as Used..." So I had a play with a D90 instead, which they let me attach the 35mm f1.8 G lens to. Seemed a good combination.

I eventually got a deal on a D7000, semi-directly from Nikon, via a work colleague. So I'm getting a little bit clipped off the price, but have to wait for a few weeks.

Now cancelled my order, after trying the camera and finding it far too small.

You might find a used D300s at a reasonable price... perhaps not as 'good' as the D7000, but a larger, solid body. There is also talk of a D400, or D300 replacement coming soon, but it's not been officially announced. Another larger body, but an FX one, is the D700. You might also want to keep an eye out for a used one. The price tag on both the D300s and D700 should/could be higher than the D7000 you were considering.

Just adding 2 cents here, but I would have to agree- I've recently sold off a D7000 with grip in lieu of a D300s with grip as a backup to my D700. The D7000 is a fine camera however is not the same with respect to its physical characteristics and build quality, and it's certainly felt when your working with it. In all honesty, you're likley to now find a slightly used D300s with MBD10 grip for less than a D7000 and still have more than enough pixels to enable you with great pictures.

    I have the D7000 with 35 1.8g also. You'll love it.

Tip: The 35 1.8g has surprisingly close focus.

Thanks folks. I've gone for a D300s for exactly the reasons stated above (by various people), i.e. the build quality and handling. Even if the D7000 can, on paper, offer superior image quality, in reality I doubt it ever would for me, particularly if I cannot hold the thing steady or comfortably.

I'm sticking with the 35mm 1.8 g of course, really looking forward to it.

    Cheers
