    Hello,
I received the following mail from Amazon today. Did anybody else receive this email from Amazon?

    Thanks,
    Esh

    Hello,

We wanted to give you an update on your order for the "Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)." Although we expected to start shipping the camera to customers on March 20, Nikon will be sending us our initial shipment of this product on March 23, 2012. This means the camera will not ship by our original estimate.

Due to the high demand for this item, we may not be able to fulfill all customer orders at the same time. Since product supplies from Nikon will be very limited, we will ship your product as soon as inventory becomes available.

We hope to see you again soon.

    Sincerely,

    Customer Service Department
    Amazon.com

One might say it looks like it was a scheme to get more preorders by setting an estimate shipping date ahead of most other competitors...

I wouldn't go quite that far M.a.rs. I think Amazon was probably acting on the information they had at the time they posted. Nikon has admitted, and apologized for, the fact that orders far exceeded their expectations and the available production. There have also been numerous delays to the release of the D800/E and D4 camera bodies. Amazon's website now says they expect new orders to be delivered within 1 to 2 months. It does no good for a retailer to mislead customers and then have a large group of unhappy people because they cannot get the product they ordered in a timely manner. Amazon gains nothing until they ship the product. Amazon is probably as big a world-wide vendor as Nikon has and I am sure Nikon wants to keep all their retailers as happy as possible.

I can agree to everything you said, but the fact that Nikon never strayed from their March 22nd date (as far as I know of course) and Amazon had theirs listed as March 20th was at least a little suspicious. Plus, even if people who won't be receiving theirs from the first batch, how many will go elsewhere to buy vs wait, hell, would they even be able to find it quicker?
And I have no idea, but aren't companies such as amazon allocated X amount of bodies? If so, taking more preorders than stock with a launch day shipping would be wrong. If not, forget it =)

There have been several small camera shops that received allocations of D4s before the March 22nd initial launch date. There have been domestic customers that have had their D4s for a couple of days, and many more international customers that received their D4s as much as five days ago.

Amazon is the largest on line retailer, it would not be uncommon for a manufacturer's largest wholesale client to receive an allocation of product a few days before everyone else. That is one of the advantages companies like Amazon enjoys. For all you or anyone else knows, Nikon led Amazon to believe they would receive product on March 20th. It's not like Nikon has already change the release date on the D4 since the camera was originally announced.

Personally I'm disappointed that Amazon did not receive product per their advertised release date. However, I do not feel we have to subscribe to some sort of "conspiracy theory" that Amazon was trying to mislead customers. I'm unclear how much real life experience you have with manufacturing and the wholesale distribution channel, but what has unfolded here is not uncommon.

You hit it on the head, I have absolutely no real life experience with manufacturing and wholesale distribution, It was all just an observation. Youre very right to say it could have been Nikon for all we know, a very valid point.
I was just trying to convey a point of view, even if a paranoid one. If I had been one of ones to preorder on Amazon and received a mail the day of original shipping day saying it wouldnt be coming, I would think twice before using them again in the future. But I guess thats the way the world turns.

PS. Ive used Amazon many many times and am even a Prime member. I have never had any problems using them, never a delay, shipping ALWAYS on time if not early. But I have never preordered anything.

This cracks me up...all the theories about it. I think Amazon is great for actually updating you on the status of the shipment not trying to play you a fool and get you to pre-order from them. On their actual website they show it ships within 1-2 month where b&h showed available on the 22nd...which isn't correct either as if you haven't ordered by now it isn't going to be available for you on the 22nd. I assume everyone that per-ordered one knew you were going to have to wait...and how many places can give you exact shipment dates months in advance??? NONE!

Well this is a little discouraging. Got an update from amazon:

    Hello,

We're writing about the order you placed on February 07, 2012. Unfortunately, we are unable to ship the item(s) as soon as we expected and need to provide you with a new estimate of when the item(s) may be delivered:
"Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)"
    New Delivery Estimate: April 16, 2012 - May 01, 2012

If you still want us to ship the delayed items when they do become available, (though they may arrive later than expected) please visit Your Orders on Amazon.com address to approve the delay:
    <Link Removed>
Please approve the delay by April 20, 2012 to avoid cancelation. If the item becomes available before that date, we will automatically ship it to you. By approving the new delivery estimate, you are letting us know that you still want the item(s).

We will make every effort to get the delayed item(s) to you as soon as possible. If there are other items in your order, they'll be shipped according to the delivery estimates listed in the order details in Your Account (www.amazon.com/youraccount) at no additional cost.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this delay.

If you have more questions about this order, you can e-mail, phone, or chat with Customer Service using the following link:

I dont know about others, but I preordered my D800 the first day it was announced with my local camera shop and was told it would be the 22nd of March, and I have it in hand now.
So Im not sure what youre trying to compare, online vs shops, online vs online.

You must have the first one then because I haven't heard anyone else that has theirs yet. I wasn't comparing anything I was just saying if you pre-ordered one that you would have to wait and that shop must be pretty good to give you a date and you actually got it on that date. I don't think anyone had concrete shipping info from the beginning is what I was trying to say anyway.

Not to mention additional processing and shipping time if you ordered online compared to picking up in a store.

Looks like we are in the same boat. I also ordered early Feb 7. I'm still holding out hope that they sent this to everybody, and ours will ship tomorrow when they arrive.

I ordered at 9:36pm PT, Feb 6 shortly after the ordering opened at Amazon, and I received this same delay email. I think there is a magic eight ball somewhere in Amazon's projected dates and Nikon is the one shaking the ball.

Everybody in the forums at amazon seems to have gotten the same thing... I'll just have to wait and see I suppose.

I have 3 other friends who got the same date range of 4/13-4/30 and based on the forums ive checked out, most people got that range or 1 day later.

I have a feeling 4/13 is the earliest estimate amazon gave out, however the first email leads me to believe some of us will receive them as early as the 26th if yours is in the batch that they receive on the 23 and have 1 day shipping.

I think amazon is playing it safe now and not telling anyone any earlier ship dates just in case.

I am also in the 4/13- 4/30 group. I spoke with a rep from amazon on the phone and confirmed that they did not receive anything from their vendor (Nikon) on the 20th like expected. I also received an email about the initial shipment beginning on the 23rd.

The rep also said that sometimes things ship earlier than the estimated dates so I'm hoping I end up being in one of the earlier batches that go out.

I've had great service from Amazon in the past and feel like Nikon really dropped the ball on this one.

After this weekend Nikon will not be shipping for ten days(Mon-Fri)in the USA. end of year inventory etc. I was told this by several Nikon dealers. going by that then Seconfd week of April maybe more feasible.

guys, all shipment topics have been redirected over here.
D800e is not scheduled to be delivered earlier than 15th of April not because of Pasha, Eastern or anything else. At the very beginning Nikon said that it's gonna be released around 1 month later than d800.

I've read the following... What timing Nikon has: "
Just a reminder that Nikon will suspend all shipments from March 24- April 1st for their yearly inventory count (March 31 is the end of the fiscal year for Nikon).

Yeah, and then B&H is closed from April 6-15 for passover after they get whatever from Nikon. I am just going to try and forget about a camera delivery until after the 15th. It isn't going to happen before then. I ordered on the 20th of Feb., which seems like 5000 people ahead of me.

Apparently admin just picked one up at Best Buy according to twitter. Might want to go give your local one a try.

BTW, if you aren't following @NikonRumors on twitter, you should be. He posts a lot of stuff there that never makes it to the main blog.

I ordered from amazon on Feb. 6 and got delivery date of March 21. A few days ago I got a massage that delivery will be April 13 - 30.
Today I have seen that the status has changed to "Shipping soon" with delivery on March 26.
