So here it is folks, canon's direct challenger to the D300S, the canon 7D.

- Approx. 18MP effective resolution APS-C CMOS sensor
- Dual DiG!C 4 imaging processors, 14-bit A/D signal conversion
- Approx. 8fps fast continuous shutter; up to 84 large high-quality JPG or 15 RAW frames
- New double-cross center AF point, new 19-point all-cross type AF
- ISO 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 12800[H])
- New 100% coverage, 1x magnification viewfinder with intelligent info display, 3D electronic horizontal level meter
- New iFCL meter system using high contrast and color detection (63-zone)
- Full HD video capture with stereo microphone jack and HDMI output jack
- LiveView shooting mode with face-detection priority AF
- New video-capture/LiveView switch
- Newly-designed streamlined body, metallic shutter sound, shutter lifespan approx. 150,000 times
- new 24mm wide-angle built-in flash supporting EOS E-TTL II (not saying it can function as a Master trigger though)
- Auto lighting optimizer
- Auto correction of lens peripheral illumination (vignetting)
- Many choices of Picture Style
- EOS Integrated Cleaning System

Yes it's real but it's not full frame. It's APS-C. This is just hitting the internet right now.

Very cool, from the specs it seems to be a worthy competitor, but the thing is, will it do as well in high ISOs?

Also, does it have the jelly effect in video? Did the 5D have the jelly effect?

Judging from the 5D, it may do better video than the Nikon.

Even the canon guys are skeptical about the noise on an 18mp APS-C sensor. They've got mixed feelings about this camera. Some are happy they can now challenge the D300 while others are disappointed. They all pretty much agree that there is now confusion as to whether the 7D is a replacement for the canon 50D or a supplement to a future 60D.

I hope Nikon delivers a weather sealed metal bodied D90 replacement for around $1200. Like the 50D (now) and the imaginary 60D (future).

As for the rolling shutter or Jello effect, It's on the 5DmkII as well. I doubt it's gone on the 7D.

Although Canon did yield in the pixel wars with the G11, down in MPs from the G10.

I use a D90 and couldn't really care less about more MPs, better MPs, yes, better ISO performance, of course, but just bigger image files - no. A weather sealed body (if the lenses were up to it) might be nice, but I doubt I'll shoot in the rain anyway and I sure wouldn't want it heavier.

Some of the best shots I've seen are at 6 MPs from an old Canon Elph and a D40.

Stop with the pixels! My AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition can't handle it! *sarcastic. But seriously, that's too damn many pixels. Any shot taken beyond ISO 400 is going to look like something my cat dragged in. Has Canon not learned anything thing from the 14-million pixel G10?

Now, now, how can anyone with the name of QuadraPixel complain about pixels.

Thankfully with my D90 I'm getting enough. I'm actually quite satisfied. It also helped that I had a perfect dinner...

Specs look great.. if I were a new tog going into this range from a D40 kit. I would be seriously considering this as an alternative to the D300S.. Nikon should have announced the D400 as it had originally planed to instead of fluffing around with the D300S.
I think the D300S would still win out for me though.. still its good.. maybe they will now bring forward the D400 and release it next year! What a nice camera that would be !! Will probably have the new Sony sensor in it too... Yay!

As adamz said in a thread a few days ago, some of us need more MP. If that's not something one wants then that person should get a D40 and be happy with it.

gentoo - I really opt for more MPx on FF, but 18Mpx on aps. its... well, You need extraordinary glass to use it properly, as the density gonna be bigger than in d3x, I'm not saying that it's too much, but really would like to see the results, if it's usable to iso 1600 than it's really big success

Yes adamz, I should have clarified, not at the expense of ISO performance. I was just doing my usual reaction to the mentality that if one doesn't use something then the camera maker shouldn't put it in there. Not much irritates me on wish lists but that one does. If one doesn't want something THEN DON'T USE IT!

@ bmxdad : 14.2mp yes thats what "they" say :-) I think that would be nice.. and you still get a good improvement in high iso capability..(from what I understand from browsing the explanations of the tech..) so ISO 6400 should be very usable.

Lets just hope when the Sony A550 gets reviewed that it does better than the A380, otherwise I see no D400 in the near future, that is if the future D400 is getting the sensor from the A550

I've seen some pictures from a550, and as for my standards, very usable till 1600iso, usable 3200 (with Noise Ninja), usable in some situations (mostly B&W) 6400, artistic usability in B&W above that level - generally a huge improvement from this what sony offered some time ago

You guys are funny. There was a Sony a850 thread and all you wanted to discuss was Fuji and their sensors. Now on this thread no one's actually saying anything about the canon. Can we at least try to stay on the topic of how the canon 7D will or won't effect the 300S?

I know everyone's passionate about your particular choice in gear that you use but no need in defending it in every post.

This is ultimate D300s killer, better, faster, cheaper ...
Nikon should try and find sensor technology partner other then Sony to stay competitive, and not trying to sell us 4 years old D300 design for 1800$.

Well in fairness to Nikon the 7D price isn't official....yet. But I think the perceived superiority of the 7D will ware off once they go head to head.

mb: What do you mean by 4 year old design, how old is the design of the Canon 50D then 6 years maybe. My 2 year old by design D300 certainly operates like a modern camera to me.

I hope that the 7D Canon is a challenge to our new D300s Nikon but if is actual a 18MP camera it might also show us were the MP war is going and if the increase in MP has any actual value

I know what it's like to handle big files like 200-300mb or more PER FILE! But more pixels is not what others need, though they seem to think so. I have a friend who switched his Nikon D700 for a canon 5DmkII because of the 21mp and "superior" video and he only shoots jpeg with it!!! The files are just too large for him!!! He only shoots 1 or 2 minute videos for the same reason. Why spend $5000 on a camera system if your going to use it as a point & shoot? And no my friend isn't Ken Rockwell. :^)

The only reason I was interested in the 7D is because I was hoping it was a full frame camera for a $2000 price. Not because I would of wanted it but because between it and the Sony's a850, Nikon would feel the heat to offer a "cheap" full frame too. But looks like Sony's going to be playing alone.

With or without more megapixels, I don't see the 7D giving the D300S much of a beating.

I think the best thing about Sony aggressively entering the DSLR race, along with the relentless competition from Canon is the pressure it puts on pricing.

You can now get an overwhelmingly capable camera for less then $1,000 (D90) with its metal bodied pro big brother for about 1.8X, $1,800 (D300s) and a capable FX camera for 2.3X, $2,300 (D700) with its big brother pro for 4.6X or $4,600 (D3). All 12 MPs.

I think the future will require Nikon to increase MPs, as well as make major improvements in all other facets of images quality and ISO performance or they will not be able to maintain those price multiples in the future as features and ever higher MPs become commoditized.

The only problem I see with Nikon's line up isn't the lower mp. It's that they don't offer a weather sealed metal body for $1100US like canon does with the 50D! If canon can offer both the 50D and 7D with that kinda build why can't Nikon make the D90 replacement and the D300S as an equal pair?

What ever you say about nikons wearther sealing.. their cameras are built to stand the elements inside and out. Remember the problems the other brands had on Antarctic expeditions and in the cold weather stress tests?
