Looks like this info is "legit" (maybe). Same price as current model with video and a few other "tweaks", maybe.
Sony has some kind of agreement with Nikon to give the a850 a head start in sales? perhaps
where there’s smoke there’s forum fire

Agreement with sony?
Do you have any specs for this D700S?
When do you think this is possible to announce?
: )
Same price ?
What are they going to do with the price of D700 then?
The price of D700 has to come down, similar to what happened to the D300 when the D300S came out.
That's going to be GREAT (for me).
Not surprising, since the D300 didn't get a full revamp.
So we will see a D700S(maybe) with a "tweaked" 12mp sensor and HD video. But what else?
How about dual SD and CF memory slots? Faster auto focus and frames per second?
Anyone?
I opt for little higher Mpx, 16-18 would do great for me, with 7fps, don't care about video. Niko, your idea of 2 cards seems very reasonable, once Nikon has this technique it shouldn't be such a problem.
Niko
I read when the first rumors of a D700X? was probably coming out it would be somewhere in the 20+ Mpx. Do you think this was just smoke?
I'm still on the threshold of buying one but would hold off for higher Mpx if it was true. This reminds me of computers back in the early 90's. One would come out at 400 MB and be the fastest on the market. The minute you got it home the same company announced they were coming out with the new fastest computer at 600 MB at the end of the month. I guess you should just buy what will be the best camera for you and forget about the next new camera for a while.
That's why Nikon lenses are such a great investment. Spend your money on lenses rather than film bodies every new camera. Nikon's used the same lens mount for the past 50 years! A camera body is only new until you take it out of the box!
I think an "affordable" 20 plus Megapixel Nikon is coming but the D700S upgrade is now more likely. The 20 plus Mp camera will more than likely be named something else like D800 and be a new body not just an update to the D700. I think we might see a 16 or 18mp D400 first though, maybe.
Sony's a850 has definitely shown us what's possible :^) Enjoy the Nikon's you've got now and be patient for what's coming.
If the D700s is the same price as the D700 (or maybe 200-300$ more expensive) it's mostly because they will discontinue the D700.
However if we get more than 12mp in the D700 upgrade, it's gonna cost more and they won't discontinue the D700.
I wouldn't mind have a D700x that is not 24mp... like 18mp or something... but faster and with best high iso results as possible.
To me, high iso is my priority because most of my shots are between ISO 1600 and 3200. With my D300 I hate to shoot at 6400 but sometimes I have too. I need a camera that is noiseless at 1600 and really good at 3200 so when I crank it up to 6400 it's usable and a possible usable 12800 would be appreciated.
What Nikon is doing lately I would not be surprised if this great new thing is D700 black/gold collectors edition for just 4000$.
As for head start, if Nikon has just released D300s then how many years of head start Sony Alpha a550 should have? On the other hand D300s is competing against Sony Alpha A850 with it ridicules price.
I'll be disappointed if its a D700s. Why not just go buy a D3?
Nikon is already the king of Low-light photography, but it needs a cheaper alternative to the D3x so that it can be competitive in the resolution space. I'd love to have a full frame D90 with twice the pixels (and no decrease in noise performance).
Why not buy a D3 when the D700 first came out?
Well the trade off, of course, is the the D700 is slower. So if they just speed it up and charge more, then you may as well have the D3. Only reason to buy a D700s is if you prefer the compact size, or if you want video (I'm making assumptions on the specs of course).
If the video is as nice as it appears the Cannon 7D is going to be (30 FPS 1080P) then I can see this being a great tool for video (unless you need to pan). Remember, both of these cameras have more resolution than 1080p requires, so the resolution bump is irrelevant for video. Full frame low light performance would be worth a $1000 premium over the 7D... after all, a good set of hot lights + paying somebody to set them up for you will cost at least that much for a single shoot.
Wooing the Photographers will be a little more difficult. Nikon has enough 12mp options out there to make most anybody happy. Unless there is some kind of feature breakthrough than I don't see anyone opting for a D700s over a D700. If there is a feature breakthrough, then it puts the D700s at odds with the D3\D3x.
This limits the audience for the D700s to three crowds - D3 owners (or D700+grip owners) who want a smaller body, D700 owners who want full frame video, and D90\D300 users who want to go full frame. They would probably just as soon buy a cheaper D700, so they don't count.
If they do not increase the resoultion what else could Nikon possibly do to improve the D700 - a 100% viewfinder coverage maybe but lets face it, it's already a high performance camera built to serve a specific purpose. Adding video would only cheaping it. In my opinion the D700 is the best dSLR made by anyone to date.
So video cheapens the 5DmkII as well?! That's why the 5DmkII is such a great seller, right? :^) The D700 is only getting an S upgrade which means everything will be the same except for a few minor things like HD video.
Sure it does. If I'm a pro photographer I want only the best features that make me money. A pro video/cinematographer doesn't buy a camera for the "still" capability. If I can afford a D700 with the required lenses then I can easily afford a HD Video camera that far out performs the 5DII or any other camera for that matter. In my opinion the D700 and 5DII are no more competitors than the 1DsIII and the D3000. The D700 offers pro caliber performance, the 5DII does not.
According to a very reliable source, this year there will be no Nikon D700s or Nikon D700x.
What Nikon plans to do is to launch totally new D800 to replace the existing D700.
There are several features available in Nikon D800:
1) Video mode 1080p video recording (full HD)
2) High resolution 24.5 MP.
3) High frame rate: 7 fps without battery grip (similar to D300s)
4) 51-area Nikon Multi-CAM 3500FX (same technology as D3X)
Basically Nikon D800 will compete head to head against Canon's EOS 5D MkII.
Most likely Nikon will launch the brand new D800 before Christmas end of this year.
Whoooaaa.............
Is this for real?
Before end of this year?
MMMMmmmm..........
It seems that Alan got us all exited but his rumor doesn't worth shit.
I seriously doubt that Nikon will announce another body this year, all we got were the D5000, D300s, D3000 and D3s which are pretty disappointing... but it was expected, it's a mid cycle upgrade and we got 4 bodies in 2009, I wouldn't expect a 5th one. It would be much more probable that they release interesting stuff in 2010: possible D90 upgrade with 1080p and D700x with 1080p but the serious bodies are coming in late 2010/early 2011 with stuff like D4/D400. You gotta give some time for Nikon to go beyond their current 12 megapixels line up.
This said, as soon as Nikon announce a 1080p full frame camera with control over video I will pre order it... if I'm not already with Canon when this happens... I won't get the 5D mark II yet and I'll still exploit the possibilities of my D300 for a good while... but I keep my eyes open on both sides.
LOL I take it your a little disappointed jbl? Next round of announcements will happen in Feb2010. Though I'm starting to hear there will only be COOLPIX and new lenses not DSLR bodies. Unless Nikon busts out an "affordable" full frame and calls it the D400 :^)
I was right about the S upgrade, it just wasn't the D700 ;^)
I'll just wait for 24mp affordable body. Bring on the lenses!
I bet Nikon will release the D700 with the exact same sensor plus add maybe $50 worth of new features and add a movie mode which nobody I know cares about anyways. Seriously! Watch them change just the info button and add a video mode. Same 12mp fx sensor I bet. Might even tweak the scene recognition thats all. I wonder if people are really buying the new D300s or even D3s? Its great that these new bodies lower their predecessors though. I'd like a D700 for about $1500.
Hi Kanuk, I don't really agreed with you. So far I know some of the photographers prefer to have video recording feature in the camera. This is is reason Nikon has done that for D300s similar thing goes to Canon 5DMKII & 7D. Yes, people will buy D300s or D3s because the price is very cheaper now & also depending on their budget.
My brains melting! I really want/need to upgrade cos the camera ive got just now (D80) just aint up to scratch. Is there any point waiting for the chance they might bring out another prosumer FX camera at the start of next year or should i pick up a d700 on the second hand market? I really dont want to invest in a body thats going to loose value in a matter of months. I had been hoping an up grade of the d700 would be coming out soon but its beginning to sound quite bleak.
@Rodimusprime - Where is the D80 failing you? If we know that we can better discuss if waiting for a DX00 body with FF and video is worth it.
"I really dont want to invest in a body thats going to loose value in a matter of months"
Then don't buy a digital camera, period. They're gonna lose value, period. The question you should be asking yourself is "Will this camera do what I need?", not "What is the book value of this camera?"
EDIT: Don't read the above as snotty, just blunt. Analysis paralysis will stop you from getting the photos you want/need TODAY.
