I was lurking behind enemy lines and found this on their forum. I thought it was a good way to show the differences in viewfinder magnification % between cameras for those who haven't looked through very many. I don't know how technically correct these pictures are but it helps to get the point across. What do you guys think?

dont know how its measured ... but they should not be standing in the middle of the road taking photos ....

edit : Ok found the old picture .. .. is it the same place ... and yes I was in the middle of the road as well taking this my picture .. :-) You can see for miles .. and there are no cars in either direction .. ! so you just go stand in the middle of the road just to be a bit rebellious! hehe ...
Yup, no problem. I was wondering why the OM-1 was so large, and then I realized it was a film camera. No duh. :D
I'm guessing the D40 sized viewfinder is slightly smaller than the D90's?
Interesting to see them all (nearly). I doubt all of them would be as bright, in the rear world, with lens apertures blocking and all that.
The Olympus OM-1 is a 35mm film camera but the reason it's viewfinder is much larger than the digital full frames is because it's magnified.
Let's just assume the same 50mm f1.4 lens is somehow mounted on all of these.
So these mountains are in Australia then hearty? No kangaroo's up there though, right :^)

Yeah, there are some assumptions made, but it gives a pretty good idea of what you'll be looking through.
Some of the best viewfinders I have looked through were from manual focus film camera's, like my friends super old Minolta.

Its a picture of the southern alps near aoraki mount cook new zealand. Its a lovely place for photos.. the whole country is a lovely place for photos.. Cant wait till I have the time to take my DSLR there. the old coolpix just doest do it justice..

Getting back to the viewfinders, I hope you newbies have a better understanding of how viewfinders compare to each other on all the different cameras. I think it's a good illustration. It's only a matter of time that the electronic viewfinder will make this graphic even more interesting. An OM-1 view through a Nikon "D5" EVF maybe? :)
Electric Viewfinders? That would mean the mirror box and the pentaprism wouldn't be needed. Say it ain't so!
Yes put you can magnify, dim or brighten an image at will. Not to mention choosing what info to overlay on top instead of having those tiny little numbers on the edge of the viewfinder.
Think of a Heads Up Display on a fighter jet but inside the eye piece of a Nikon! Awesome!
Then it wouldn't be a DSLR. It would be somewhat of a hybrid then.
I'm pretty happy with the viewfinders for now. We'll worry about that stuff later.

nikodoby, Its already available. you can do it via liveview ? but with the attached nikon head-screen thingi.. I think its only a matter of time before we will have wireless viewing from camera to head-screen thingi ( sorry cant remember what its called lol ! )
Head-up display.
Electronic viewfinders are horrible (from my experience), but even an SLR sucks in comparison to a rangefinder camera when it comes to maintaining involvement in your environment. I have high hopes for a revised P6000 for that reason. Would even buy an Leica M9, if it had a FF sensor, good image quality, and I had a spare $20,000.
The size comparisons are very interesting, I wonder if there is a way to measure screen brightness, another important attribute.
Speaking of which ted I still think that M9 is going to use the 18mp sensor of the canon 7D.
hearty, I mean having a high resolution "through the lens" Heads up display. Augmented reality kinda thing maybe? Not the cumbersome attachments that let you use your LCD as a viewfinder.
