Now that Sony can market a FF camera at $ 2000.00 US I think that Nikon should offer something better:

A D90 Size FX camera, either 12 or 24MP, 3 frames/sec, same focus and other settings that are found on the D90 but it should be able to meter older lenses.

I think there is no point in downgrading a D700, I would rather have the choice of a smaller FX body, a smaller FX body would also do less harm to the sales of larger FX bodies

What do you think

Just got the cost to fix my 70-200 2.8 lens, wow $ 400.00 to repair the zoom ring which got dented from the impact. Anyway should have it back in couple of weeks

Why would they do that? What is the point in selling smaller/lighter FX cameras? If you are really serious about getting optimal low light results you should get an FX camera, but you'd also need quite some expensive glass. people who can afford that aren't to worried about the weight of the camera, and the size is actually helping to handle the camera better.

There is a good reason to make a pro DX camera due to the crop factor giving you some extra reach without buying the rediculously expensive lenses, but the other way around... I don't see a point. Or it would have to be that less fortunate people can afford an FX camera of course. But I don't think that is a valid reason for any of the brands to start releasing such cameras. After all most people just don't need it.

I don't think the A850 is anywhere near small- it's more like a smaller version of the A900. I glanced at Sony lenses, and sure, they're pretty cheap, but what's the point? Does Sony make intuitive camera bodies like Nikon does? I already have a 3 lens Nikkor collection, and 1 film body plus 1 digital body. It doesn't do me any good if Sony makes a FF camera for cheap. I already made the investment, I don't have the money to change around.

As long as Nikon is around, I'll shoot Nikon.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind if Nikon decided to make a FF camera, it's just that I won't look at anything other than Nikon now.

Cheaper lenses wouldn't hurt either. :D

I realize that the new Sony is not actual smaller in size, I would just like the option of a smaller FX body with less specs and actually their are a few Nikon FX lenses that are sharp, lower cost and would be suitable for a smaller FX body. Also I bet that a few people with current larger bodies would consider getting a smaller FX body if it was made.

Anyway a smaller FX body would be an easier step up for someone like you NSXType-R, with a D40 and a FM2 (app same size as a D90 sized FX body) and you could start with the lens from your FM2. Also a smaller FX body might result in more improvement in entry level FX lenses. The smaller FX body is not meant to replace a Larger D700 size camera, but a different option and yes also a cheaper option. And actual Nikon could benefit from making a smaller cheaper FX body in selling more entry level FX lenses.

I honestly don't understand why FF cameras have to be so large, my old film cameras were not nearly that big.

Yes I also like larger cameras like my current D300 with grip and all, but I also use my D80 when I fell like using a smaller camera. So for me a smaller FX body would be replacing my D80 and complimenting my D300.

I always prefer a smaller camera that maintains the feature set I need.

I love the size of the D40/D60, but I need depth of field preview. Therefore, I use the D90. It also fits my hands well and balances my large and favorite lens, the 105/2.8 micro.

I occasionally like to use older AIs lenses and I'm too lazy to go fully manual, so I'm going to buy a D300s, although I prefer the size of the D90. I'll carry whichever body is lighter/smaller and capable of meeting my needs at the time.

For my uses a FF camera has applicability for wide angle shots and better low light performance. If those features are compromised in a small body, then the camera has no interest for me. On the other hand, if you could pack the features of a D3 in a D90 size body, I'd be thrilled.

Yes the D80/90 has the motor drive to auto focus older AF lenses but does have the "meter coupling lever" and therefor can not read the aperture form older lenses. The camera does not have to be larger like the D300/700/3 etc to have that feature it simply a Nikon design decision to leave it out. And yes a D90 size FX camera have to have that feature or it would be pointless to make it

Anyway a D90 can produce the same quality images as compared to a D300, therefor a compact FX camera will do the same in comparison to a larger FX camera with the same sensor. And if high speed, advanced focus module, pro quality body etc is left out Nikon should be able to make a sub $ 2000.00 compact FX body.

Actually why not have Nikon do a first, why should a new thing always be the best, largest, fastest etc

BMXDad, I understand what you're saying, but $2000 for a body is still expensive. I'd rather spring for a lens by that point. The $1000 point is important though. I would love to see a D90 sized camera, with a D90 sized pricetag. The issue is there then, what do I do with my DX lenses? My 50mm 1.2 won't autofocus, so it's of really no use then. That's why I would love to see more improvements with DX. I just hope DX doesn't collapse anytime soon. The fact that they released the 35mm 1.8 is only good news though.

When the D90 replacement comes, I might think about getting it- dual bodying with the D40 and the D100...? (Nikon might have some issues with naming it. :D)

That would be pretty cool.

It wasn't that long ago that people said an "affordable" consumer DSLR couldn't be priced below $2000US. Your choices were digital point & shoots or film SLRs. Then canon slapped a $999US price tag on the 300D and everyone freaked out. Six years later we've got DSLRs at around the $400 dollar mark.

Sony made the history books yesterday with the a850 for sure. As the full frame cameras start to flood the market, We will see smaller FF cameras and prices.

Come on Nikon give us a peek....
