D5100 error: Press shutter release button again

I bought a D5100 two weeks ago. Today I rode my Harley to the Daytona Speedway to take pictures of bikes and race bike. When I turned the D5100 on I received this error message: Press shutter release button again

Later in the day I called Nikon 24 hour support number. The lady told me to return the camera and have it serviced. I'm disappointed but electronics fail from time to time.

I read on some threads that the D40 had shutter issues. I was wandering if other D5100 users have had this problem?

Now I'm thinking perhaps I should not just exchange it but get a D7000 instead. Most likely I'll let them exchange the camera but there are some things about the D7000 I like and if I was going to make the switch now is the time to do it.

Sorry about the D5100 issues, jccash. If you're going to be second guessing the D5100/D7000 issue, you might want to just upgrade now.

Did it just happen once? Was your camera secure while you were riding? The one time i got this message i had dropped my camera.

Yes the camera was secure and in a Think Tank bag in one of my luggage bags on the bike. Camera was never dropped.

I have the same problem... i am going to send it out this monday.

What is this "trade in" you speak of? I handled a d7k last week and i simply love the added features!

A local guy in my city got the same error after his girlfriend dropped the camera. He told me he sent it out to nikon and it was repaired without questions 2 months later...Apparently the shutter and shutter motor needed replacement and they had to wait for parts

Do not tell them this, they'll say that delicate instruments like camera's are not made to withstand the "Harly vibrations and shake"..

They tried that with me too in the past.. so just don't tell them !!

Dutch, thanks for the tip. I can return my D5100 to the local camera shop due to I just bought it two weeks ago. I already had lenses so I only purchased the body. I like the D5100 a lot but I had to do a firmware upgrade to get it to work right with my memory card (16GB Extreme Class 10 SanDisk. Now this shutter issue. They will exchange it or refund me. I might go for the DK7 but the pictures the D5100 took were very nice and I got use to the flip out monitor which I did not think I was going to like. Then again if I return it for cash refund I can buy new Slip On's for my Harley 2011 Street Glide..... (not going to do that....).

I assume you've seen the screen on the D7000. Even though it doesn't flip out (which I admit I do use all the time on my nex-5n), the higher resolution of the D7000 screen is a thing of beauty for image review. I guess I should have said that only you know whether the upgrade makes sense for you.

The only times I took my camera on my bike it was a BMW R1150 (very smooth engine) and I devoted the entire huge rear top box to it so the camera case was itself encased in lots of soft packing to eliminate road shocks and engine vibration.

A pothole that you forget down the road will kill a DSLR pretty quick.

Nope, I've had a D40 for the last 4 years or so, I haven't had any problems with the shutter.

I've had one error where it would say that the lens isn't attached, but I think it's just because the 18-135 is a cheaply made lens. In fact, I haven't had that error come up in the last year or so.

The other posters are correct- electronic equipment can be very sensitive to vibrations.

Think of it this way in this video-

If the frequency of the vibrations are just right, your bike could shake your camera to bits.

Keep that in mind for future purchases and lenses.

I didn't mean it as you dropped it, but like others said vibrations and bumps and things could have caused this...especially if it was sitting in the big it was getting all the vibrations and any bump hit with it.

Before I bought the D5100 I used (still own and used it Sunday) a D40. I rode all over the east coast of USA with it in my Harley. Never had this shutter problem. Hopefully today the store where I purchased my new D5100 will exchange it.

Here is my update. User mistake: Camera is working fine. Turns out the mirror was stuck do to me trying an old lens in manual mode. I"m happy now. I have a lot to learn. My first Nikon was an EM than an FE from small point and shoot units, then a D40 now the D5100. I like the D7000 but it was a little over my budget and I'm sure I'll be happy with years of picture taking with the D5100.

Not sure how the mirror would be stuck using an old lens. Either way it should work, unless you're using a weird fisheye lens where you need mirror lockup.

The lower end cameras under the D7000 are pretty cool- basically anything with an F-mount you can use without worrying too much about breaking anything.
