Yay! Finally hope for a modern AF-S Nikon equivalent to Canon 135/2L. And with VR too.
I really hope to get my hands on one of these.

Wait, VR *checks* oh man, I've been considering the 85mm f/1.4 or 105mm or 135mm f/2 as a purchase down the road. If they come out with this lens I might just really want it.
Wow, sounds like a killer lens.
Bring it on!
Too bad about the impending price...
We'll see what that is... there's probably enough time for me to have the funds available! Now who wants a kidney? :P
It sounds cool and I might get one. And this is coming from someone who already owns a 135 DC and a 85/1.4G. You'd think I'd stop somewhere, but the VR would be really useful many times, and it probably will be very good optically. If this lens is real, then it would represent the first Nikon prime faster than f/2 with VR.
I think I'll wait for the f/1.4 version to come out. (Yes, I'm joking.)
One downside would be that it wouldn't be the same filter size as the holy zoom trinity (77mm) because the front element will have a diameter of 135/1.8=75mm. That might be the only downside. I would love to have this lens.
I am very interested in this lens if it really happens. I have been waiting for a 135mm upgrade/new lens. I would hope it would be right around 1,200 or 1,400 but I have a feeling it is going to be closer to 1,800+. I'm looking for a nice longer lens to add to my kit and this could be right where I want to be, not to long and not to short.
I would doubt that a 135/1.8 VR would go for less than $2000, with $2500 as a more realistic estimate I would say.
Go look at this...

Then go to the "older" photo and see the entire frame, as the above link was about 0.7 Mp of the sensor. The 135mm f/2.0 NIKKOR is already a phenomenal lens. The example was taken on a D90. So, if NIKON comes out with an f/1.8 as sharp and with VR.... betcha $2500 is what it will take.

Given the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 is 82mm filters, and those Nikon patents for 18mm and 20mm f/1.8 lenses, AND Tamron making their 24-70mm f/2.8 VC with 82mm filter threads, I think I wouldn't mind switching to 82mm filters if there were the chance to eventually have an 18mm f/1.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 135mm f/1.8 that all had 82mm filter threads. I think I'd at least have a CPL in 82mm and 77mm, so as to not interfere with hoods.
Sounds like another $3-5,000 gem of a lens. The 200mm VR is $5,800 - this one could reach for the moon as well. It would be great if my guess is wrong - It would be a great lens to have.
I would love to get my hands on the current 135mm DC for sure.
there's no way it will cost the same as a 200/2. the main reason people will buy it is that it will be smaller and faster than the 70-200. may be the best reason yet for me to sell mine.

mmm Not so sure about that, it looks like Nikon is working on a xx 1.8 range that's affordable now.. :
28mm 1.8 affordable ?? / patent stage...)
35mm 1.8 affordable / realy cheap
50mm 1,8 affordable / realy cheap
85mm 1.8 affordable / just outside realy cheap for the offerred goods.. :-)
135mm 1.8 Affordable ?? / Patent stage ..
I truly hope this is an ongoing patern.... :-)

Yes, I have the new 85mm f/1.8 and it is really nice. But the 135mm f/2.0 was almost $1400, and no VR. SO, faster add about $500 + VR, another $500 and there you have it.... And as TaoTeJared said... maybe even another mega buck lens over $3000. I think the jump from 1.8 to 2.0 is really big and with the VR added......
OK, we will see how all this nonsense comes out. I am hoping it will be at around $800, sharper than my 135mm f/2.0 and be available soon....... not holding my breath, however....
It'd also be great if it could accept a teleconverter... if it went well with the TC-20Eiii that combination would be more tempting than the current AF-S 300mm f/4
Of course the 300mm F4 is a better option because it has a tripod foot for improved stability.
I absolutely love the 135 f/2 DC. This lens would have to absolutely knock my socks off for me to upgrade. Even the stuff I should hate about the f/2, irrationally I've somehow decided I love. It's not "heavy", it's "solid". It doesn't "only open up to f/2", rather, it "intelligently chooses f/2 as the jumping-off point for DC". Blah blah blah.
I hope this new lens serves a happy market. I'm likely going to keep cuddling what I have.
The problem with the teleconverter issue is in the rear element of the lens. And, my guess is the new 135 f.1.8 would most likely have the same problem as the f/2.0. The rear element hits the teleconverter, thus destroying both if inadvertently used incorrectly.

1.8 at this range is not even in the same league as a the other 1.8s. There is a huge difference in optics and is a whole different ballgame.
I'm with Msmoto on this one as well. I think it would add at least $1000. VR, 1.8, Nano coating, afs, etc.
Of course it is just a patent - There are over 500 patent submissions just in the last 3 years - Not many ever make it to market. Nikon is a patent company - they file everything even if they have no intentions to make it just so no one else could of has to pay them for the rights to use it.
Anyone else remember the 85mm 1.4 VR? That patent was filed as well - around 3 years ago before the release of the 85mm 1.4 G was released.
Up kinda early, huh, TTJ? And, I am upping the anti.... to match you.... this is a $3,000-5,000 lens most likely kinda like the 200f/2.0. It always amazes me when one goes from 1.8 to 1.4, or 2.0 to 1.8. or 2.8 to 2.0, the almost doubling in cost. Thus another calculation is $2800 plus VR at $500, mmmm... $3300. Are we going to get a pool going? Ha, ha, ha.

I guess the price will be less than 2k, because Nikon already has enough too expensive pro primes which make less sense (businesswise) than cheaper, yet optically excellent primes which people buy by the truckloads. Around 2k is still affordable for many people.
Even if the updated version came out without VR, I´d still be tempted for weight reasons alone. The 200/2 is too expensive, bulky and heavy to carry around all day unless you are a silverback.
I guess I´ll have to get a Canon rig, while I wait for Nikon to release the new 135 AND the 400/5.6 which I have been waiting for as well.
Opps, Godless, sorry I was editing my post, but please see above.
Just couldn't sleep tonight, it will be a hell of a monday.
Figure currently:
135mm is $1,400
70-200 is $2,400
85mm 1.4 is $1,700
35mm 1.4 is $1,700
VR about $1,000, f/1.8 another $1,000, Nano, etc. etc. $400. = $3,800 and that's my final offer! ;)
