I'm away for day and look what happens! So I agree the rumor of the D600 seal the deal the D400 is going to be aDX camera. The report of the book for the D400 is also encouraging. I also so feel a little vindicated, if all this comes true, I just knew there was room for another FX camera.
Now whats price and features of the much anticipated D400?

Haha the reactions here...wow. Even when I logged in in the morning my reaction (whilst groggy was) ಠ_ಠ So you and I both can be happy that we get our entry FX :P
D400 might share the same chassis is as the D600, basically D800 grade with a DX sensor , since we have a D600 for FX duties.

OK, now that Tao's headache is better..... the D400 will have an 18MP DX sensor and very high ISO, up to 64,000 in extended possibly 12,800 native... and 8-9 FPS. Buffer to handle up to fifty continuous. Price.... $2199.95. So, why not...? Maybe we are going to see some really super DX sensors.. Well, a girl can hope can't she?
Ball's in your court....

I always thought that it would be DX. i dont know, from a basic business sense, it doesnt make sense to come out with a d400 fx... unless nikons plan was to abandon their d300/d300s shooters... and it seems they have a lot of them (hell a lot of government agencies use d300 for training)

It has to be DX. Take the number of 7D's, D300's, D300s's and the new A77 sold worldwide - think Nikon would say 'no thanks' to a piece of that rather expensive pie? I think not

Is anybody here? It seems so lonely..... I feel abandoned. Actually, as the D400 is, according to some of the good analysts on the NRF, long overdue, maybe this is what NIKON has done and it may not be their choice. Or for other reasons of which no one knows, there has been a delay in the announcement. Certainly the devastation to NIKON by the Tsunami in Japan, and the floods in Thailand may have created more issues for NIKON that any of us can imagine and it is for this reason we are seeing all the production issues and slow delivery of the latest equipment. And of course the delay in the announcement of the D400. And, let's not forget, this more likely than not, will be the ultimate DX camera in anyone's lineup.

D3200 was announced and on shelves very quickly!! like within weeks!!
Looking at how clean some of the D3200 ISO 6400 shots are on DPR, gives me hope for a great D400!
Money is waiting for you Nikon! Nothing helps a company recover from disaster faster than cold hard cash.....come get it Nikon, it's waiting for you :)

It's either 16MP or 24MP, I don't know where the 18-20MP rumors come from, don't seem economical to invest in a totally new sensor.

I think Nikon and Canon doesn't wanna eat the sales of their full frame cameras and therefore decided to not upgrade their flagship APS-C body. Notice a pattern? 7D not upgraded for a long time. D300s too.

Sony also lost a plant that was a total loss, I'm not sure about Canon's but it sounded just as bad as Nikon's. That accounts for the large delay. Nikon said it's DX manufacturing would not be up until March of 2012 - and one month later - bingo, we have a D3200.
The Canon 7d also came out a year after Nikon's. Canon and Nikon rarely (except pro bodies) come out within the same year. Usually they are a year apart trading the spot for the "new tech" slot. With the flooding and the earthquake, this may have changed the release schedules though.I believe the D400 will still come. After the D3200 was announced, there were Nikon reps saying there were going to be two more bodies this year. The D7000 upgrade is due at a normal schedule to be out in December, considering everything is being released about 3 months later, it pushing that into next year. That leaves a D400, D5200 (which usually comes after the D7000 series) and the so-called D600 camera strap (camera not included;)
The 18-20MP have been rumored chips that Nikon has looked at in the past. Most of the 12mp sensors in the last generation actually had different sensors but were Updates of the same design family. i.e. sensor 1234abc, 1234abc-2... Depending on what they all have been working on, they have dumped sensors in the past - anyone remember the D40x?
I remember seeing a Sony production catalog of sensors when the D300 came out. They literally had 100's of 12mp DX sensor candidates. There were every MP count from 6 to 14 and dozens of "unique" designs. I'm sure most were for other non-photo uses, but it stands that there could be a change easily.

Cool info! I still think they'd keep it at either 16MP or 24MP, it's cheaper. D3100 was announced later than D300s but it got updated earlier... I'm pretty sure that D7000 will be updated this year though, and I'm very eager to buy it. :D

The D7000 falls too short in metering and AF features for me, plus the body is just too small for my personal taste.
If the D300 series is gone, I'm going to have to suck it up and go FX something. If there is a FX pro-sumer body and it is lacking in the AF & metering, D800 or D3s for me but not really what I want to spend all my budget on this year. I had hopped to get a couple more SB900s or 910s and swap around a bunch of glass which would cost another $1000 and a new computer. Ugg - this is going to be a costly year I'm afraid.

@tao - every year is costly:), I wasn't even planning to upgrade my camera this year and... once I put d800 into my hand I knew it's gonna stay there for a longer period of time, and that was just at the end of March, so many months to come, so many needs:)
Posted 1 year ago # -
@tao Yes photography and life is expensive, but once you have used a D800 you will not want to back to DX. it really does live up to all the hype
and you can use in DX mode untill you get some new glassPosted 1 year ago # -

No, this cannot happen. We know the new D400 will be here soon.... I think.......
If NIKON drops the D300++ series, this will be upsetting. I would think this is such an integral part of the lineup. No other DX has the "pro" qualities. So, take another aspirin, Tao, hang on with the rest of us, and we will overcome..... at least wait patiently together...@sevencrossing.... you are not helping those of us who are waiting for the D400, ha, ha, ha.... now I have to check the specs on the D800 again....but, the only 4 FPS really holds me back as some things simply need 6-8 as a minimum. I suppose it is in a way like going 150 mph on your motorcycle and having arrived there after only a tick over 10 seconds. After that, there are no fast cars...
. as Tao said "Ugg - this is going to be a costly year I'm afraid."

While I am waiting for the D400, there is that 10% of me that is curious about the D800.
Doesn't the D800 do dx mode at 6fps @ 16mp?

Well, I was incorrect in my post above. It does do 5 FPS in DX mode. But, I am hoping, or wishing, or sitting here wondering, if the D400 will do 8 or 9, as the D300s does 7 FPS. And this is much easier to do on a D400 than on a D4, as the mirror is most likely only about 1/3rd the mass of the D4 mirror. At 100 mph, this translates to 147 feet per second. So, a photo every 18 feet is much better than every 30 feet. A lot happens when cars or bikes or whatever do something unexpected.
So, D400, 9 FPS, ISO native 6400-12,800. able to handle 100 continuous. It will be interesting to see exactly what NIKON has up its sleeve...

Well it has been a crazy few weeks with the 24 MP D3200 being announced and the rumored D600 with a $1500 price point, it all makes my head spin and rethink some of my ideas.
What does this all mean for the D400?
I expect that the D400 is going to be at or above the $1500 price point so I think that means it has to be the pinnacle of all DX cameras perhaps a mini D4 with all the pro features just a smaller sensor.
I’ve been looking for the best DX sensor possible and found some rumors of a 32 mp Aptina sensor. Any body know anything about this?
I know that more megapixels don’t mean better images but from a marketing stand point it will be hard to sell a high end DX camera if the bottom of the line (D3200) is 24 mp and not be higher.
So I’m looking for an amazing camera!
