...... and I may have to "settle" for a D800 :-( the problem is I wont need the extra MP.. so It would be wasted on me.. why should I have to pay an extra 600 for stuff I don't need ?

yes the big files are a bit of a pain, even with a fast computer
storing them is, however, not an issue (unless you shoot events) just be more vicious with your culling,
Big files are the price you pay for the D800s amazing dynamic range
it is also very nice, to do a major crop, without losing too much IQ
Warning, after you have used one. you are unlikely to want to go back to Dx
Yes, it would nice if Nikon could make something similar to the D800 for half the price and with smaller file sizes but if that was possible, I don't think we would have seen the D600
In the UK the D800 can be had for £800 less than its highest price
