Dear Nikon...build it and I will buy.

    Seriously...

And please make it available before next summer when we go on our "big" vacation.

Hi.. Im a longtime lurker of this thread. And i want the D400 BAD! But i have a sense that its comming. There was someone who posted that the D400 would be announced last. And that makes sense to me. First the low end DX (D3200) then the highend FX(D800), then the low end FX (D600). I think the next logical step is a high end DX format camera. I just hope my (and everyone elses ) predictions are correct. Cuz I WANT THAT CAMERA!

Notes to Jelletheman and tcole1983: I am certain that the D400 will be announced. That is based solely on what fellow pro photographers that I personally know and have met tell ME and many have written to Nikon to share that sense of urgency. Nikon has quite cold, hard calculatedly decided on release dates strictly based on marketing intel and forecasts. They are in this for the money and their primary responsibility is to their shareholders and not to us.

I think this figure shows the source of the frustration well:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Nikon_DSLR_cameras
Considering the D300s was a minor update, that looks like a loooooong time since the last major upgrade because it is.

I had my D300 stolen from me almost exactly three years ago. Instead of getting the D300s I decided on the D90 as a sort of stop gap until the D400 showed up. Who would have imagined back then that it could still not be announced by now? I doubt anyone would have thought that the D90 would be updated 2+ years before the D300/s!

You may be right, but most companies don't work like that. They don't just determine that the best timing is such and such date based on marketing strategy, and sometimes far from it. Lot of the challenges come first from the product development and manufacturing/tooling side. Then, factories don't just pop up out of thin air fully staffed with competent employees whenever marketing decides it's time. Much of the schedules rely on phasing product demand with manufacturing capacity, sometimes based on marketing forecasts, but still, once production falls off in a certain plant, that's the time to spool up the next line appropriate for that plant.

A lot of us are waiting... and I think this is maybe good. I cannot imagine Nikon bringing out now a D400 which is not much better than a D3200. The sensor technology is almost for certain going to have to be ISO 12,800 or if 6,400, then the FPS will be 8-9. But, I think the delay is going to force them to have a real winner whenever it does arrive. And, they do read this forum.... then probably go in the back room and laugh out loud....

I would be happy with a version of the current 16.2MP with EXPEED 3 or 4, a top-tier autofocus system, 8-9FPS, and all of the good features of the D300S. They could bring the D7200 with the 24MP sensor, I don't need it. I'd rather push ISO and speed.

Remember the D4 has a 16MP resolution sensor. I would be so happy with a DX-D400 version of the FX-D4 on the spec sheets... it has a ring to it :-) Nice to have a backup with similar workflow for the D4 guys, right? ;-)

I for one don't anticipate high MP or high FPS. I'd be happy with anything 16-20MP and with 6 fps on raw.
I would basically buy a D7000 with the high end AF unit and a larger body.

I also dream of a built in grip on DX and an x-sync speed increase in any amount, but those aren't very likely.

I have been a Nikon user forever, but...

Is there anything else comparable to what they are saying the D400 is coming with from Canon or anyone else?

Specifically: DX, at least 8FPS, high ISO, 18+ megapixel and a quick write speed.

OK, kinda like getting spoiled by anything which really does its job well.... very difficult to go backwards. And the D4 simply makes life easier, so to lose some features is tough. And that is why I want a D400...functions/ergonomics similar to the D4. And for about one-thrid the price.

A recurring D400 "want" is a high ISO
As rule the higher the ISO the lower the IQ
As rule the bigger sensor the the higher the IQ
Nikon are going to have to come up with something amazing, to get a DX sensor that matches the D4 high ISO IQ

will they do it? yes but not for a while

As i have mentioned before.Mmost of Nikon's best glass is FX so I cant see a high spec Dx being a priority

(someone will now post somthing about "reach" and "sweet spots")

I don't really fully understand the DX/FX glass argument.

A user, or a serious DX user need only cover the ultra wide end with DX glass, say a 10-24mm for example. Anything from 14mm up in theory can be covered with FX glass if that's what the user wants, i.e. 'the best' glass.

They will build it, it will be the best DX Nikon can produce, and many of us will buy it.

Egronomics and build quality will be D4/D800ish not D7000/D600ish but it won't have the built in battery grip for cost savings (Nikon will get another $400 out of us for an accessory battery grip). Autofocus will likely use the same senor as in the D600, fps will be the fastest in the DX line, mp will range somewhere between 16 and 24, image quality will be very good near the DxOMark score of 88 obtained by the $8,000 D3x, higher than the score of 81 obtained by the D3200 (the D7000 scored 80) and higher than the score of 81 obtained by the D3.

The DX D400 image quality will outperform last generations FX D3 and D700 and about equal the D3x for less than $2,000, quite a feat when you think about it.

But will new DX glass keep up with the new abilities of the D400? That is a serious issue. Will Nikon finally produce a DX equivalent "holy trinity?" They don't seem to have been interested in doing so. I say, scale down the "holy trinity" optics to DX size, use more plastic and produce them in Thailand or China for cost savings just like Nikon did for the D600. The Thailand D600 to the Japanese D4/D800 is the design and production model to use for a line of DX "pro" glass. If they build a line of high quality DX glass, it will sell well to all those who use a D400 and a D7200. That should be a sufficient market to justify the development costs.

this means Nikon would product 4 camera/ lens ranges

consumer DX eg D3200 and D7100
    consumer FX eg D600
    Pro Dx eg D400
Pro FX eg D800 and D4

    just don't see it somehow

Considering that Nikon cannot keep existing lens lines in stock, adding another line would be insane.

Ok......all of you FX guys should be happy now....and so should Nikon! ;-), and I'm really hoping that they're using all of that newly gained FX money to produce the best DX camera that the world has ever seen....AKA... That, fabulous ,rumored, tricked out ,D400......I've said it once,I've said it twice.....but I will say it one more time......Nikon,...If you get the D400 right.....it's sales will far exceed the D800 and D600 sales combined. This should be a no brainer to management....less money on a sale...but volume baby, volume ;-)

I do NOT think Nikon is going to much upgrade their DX glass for the D400. I would be delighted as others I know if just One the 80-400VR updated (also that would be FX and work great for D600). But they do KNOW what a demand there is for the D400. When I mentioned that Nikon's cold heard strategy includes production lines etc. as DavidHarsey has so well pointed out. Also PB PM I think is right on too! Just wish I KNEW when I would be first able to BUY a good D400. That might say, wait for it, or DON'T wait for it.

I'm afraid DaveyJ is correct. Nikon is true to it's shareholders and timelines of when $$ come in. D600 = 4 quarter sales. All of Nikon's body releases are about 1 month before the next financial quarter. That is not coincidence.

Nikon is a beast of predictability except for this camera. Every camera system has hit "the date" within a month of expected except for the D400 - which the Thailand floods and tsunami curbed probably the beginning of production just before it's scheduled start. I think the D3200 got it's sensor.

The market is changing for camera's for sure. Maybe Mother Nature has moved the unmovable and the D400 will be something from left field.

TBH At this point, I would be fine with the D3200 sensor in a D300s body.

I wouldn't :p. I tend to believe Thom on this one (read his last posts). The DX segment is way too important to Nikon. Nikon won't drop DX if Canon and Sony won't.... and I'm not aware of any rumors that those companies will do so. I have good hopes to see a D400 in early 2013, and am willing to wait that long as well. This would all be so much easier if Nikon communicated about what their plans are. Heck, if I were Nikon, I would try to release something before the holiday season but that's just me...

Until then, lets keep this forum alive with D400 stuff and show them we care!

Good Post D300 user! The wider depth of field advantage for me alone is why I probably won't buy a D800 or D600. They also are not going to dump the D400 on the market right now as it would run interference on THEIR OWN PROGRAM. For what its worth though at my place the D7000 is the one every body wants to shoot with now. Had the D700 had that status I'd still own that. We are looking at the D600. MYSELF I am beginning to think a D7100 might be even better from my standpoint. These "pro" tougher bodies push up the price quite a lot. The D7000 has been very successful. And of course the HUGELY awaited D400 I believe will set a new standard!

From my experience with the D300, I'd say they're worth every penny.
