I need FPS and the D400 at the rumored specs would be perfect for me. Nikon has to understand that most people cannot justify $6k for a D4 until they have some experience under their belt and are actually making money from their hobby. If I was already making money from this than I would certainly buy a D4. But I need to get started first.

I believe they do; which is why I think they are bringing out the D600
but they are not going to introduce a camera that dents the sales of the D4

Wouldn't most pro's want to stay on FX though? For the sports I want to shoot, FX would be better for me as Im in close. But If I had to choose the D600 with FX and 5 FPS or the D400 with DX and 8 or 9 FPS. I'd go with the D400.

With all the new releases this year and I don't think we will see D400. With the impact of the Tsanumi to the production of the cameras, I think Nikon as a whole has done a a great job in providing some great cameras but I think they can not flood the market with all its latest DSLR's as they need to spread out releases. Pity though its not the one I was after, will be good to see the D600 and its reviews and hopefully sometime next year we will see the d400...

The D400 is the easily most anticipated DSLR camera. There are many (I am only one of many) who are waiting very impatiently for the D400. FX has quite a few glitches for me. The D600 will though sell very well.

Although the gossip I hear is the supposed Sep 18 date for the D400 may not actually come off, it is not totally defunct. Nikon may be trying to keep everyone on the edge of their seats, drop the D600 into the party, and actually come through with the D400 announcement as well. Photokina is a big event. Canon may have the EOS 3DX, a 46MP body and Nikon would certainly want to have at least a couple of items to try to compete with this for publicity. A D400, as it has been so long overdue, might just do this.

But, even if the D400 is announced, the release date could be as far off as December or even later depending on the details. What nikon would be attempting to do is freeze some customers who want a D400 but who may be thinking Canon.

That would be the smartest thing Nikon could do at this point as I see it. Apparently they have failed to realize that there are very serious amateurs and pros who are actually just waiting to make their next purchase decision and many of these folks have told me they are losing patience and confidence. TO get a D600 with very amateur features and greater glass requirements, or to acquire a D800 since Nikon has left them in the lurch actually may make some newspaper groups look at Canon for their next cameras or something else(SONY or FUJI) that is still DX based. Only this Photokina tactic makes any sense to me.

The Canon rumor sites are saying the exact opposite, meaning they don't expect any new EOS cameras at Photokina. Why? Canon doesn't have a new sensor to put in a 1.6x crop camera. It would just be another 18MP camera, why waste the R&D on a new body when the current one works fine with the recent firmware update?

The only Photokina release they are talking about is a possible update of the EF 400mm F5.6.

From Canon Rumors, a more trusted source for Canon stuff IMO.
"There is next to no talk about a new EOS body for Photokina. The next camera will be a smaller full frame camera, when is still the question."
    http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/09/announcements-before-photokina/

Anyway, back to the D400. I'm leaning more and more towards there not being a D400, not this year, maybe not ever.

It will not be long and we will know for certain. Maybe the "secret meetings" which one would suspect Canon and Nikon have from time to time, has resulted in a pass on Photokina for both.

I still have hope, but not as much as previously stated, that Nikon will come through with both the D600 and D400. If not Photokina, then sometime before the end of October. With the D4 and D800 now available, Nikon may be readying themselves for another new "pair" of bodies. Time will tell.

msmoto, I hope you are onto something. A D400 would probably keep me from buying yet another D800E. It would REALLY depend on what ISO 3200 looked like.

A bit of searching on the talk out in cyberspace and I found one person who claimed they had discussed this with a Nikon representative. The word was Nikon will continue with a D300s replacement in the same quality/style, etc., but it will not be soon. May be in the Spring of 2013. Nikon has never ever given any statement like this out like this and a rep who was caught making this statement might lose his job. Too many folks are getting upset by the long wait for the D400 and Nikon has experts that educate them regarding the timing of product introduction and negative consequences of waiting too long. So, one can conclude this is just bologna.

At least for the next couple of weeks, I am waiting for the D400.

I am sure the distributors are giving them hell in sales meetings. Personally I think the D600 caught us all by surprise and really should have been the D300s (DX) replacement with the lower end FX D600 following on next spring.

Just think of the problem from nikons perspective.
    D4 10fps $6k
    D800 4fps
D7000 6fps and not the best autofocus
D600 6fps and not the best autofocus
    D5100 forgetaboutit
    D3200 forgetaboutit

So basically, we have no current action camera under $6k. There WILL be a cheaper action camera sooner or later, with decent autofocusing. Here's hoping for a DX D400 with 12fps, phase detect autofocus on the chip and dual XQD.

Yes, that would be tempting camera, but how much cheaper than the D4 would it have to be ?

would you buy one if it was the same price as a D800?

In short, no I wouldn't. Or rather, I couldn't. I am in australia, and the D800 retails for $3800, and it after tax, it comes to much the same price if you buy from the US. I would wait till it was availible refurbished, or till I could get a deal on a used one. Even then, I probably couldn't afford one unless I was a semi pro action shooter . . and if I was that, my first priority would be getting a better lens, not a better body. If it had a built in focus stacking feature, it would be my dream camera.
I don't think it would be priced the same as the D800 though. The D300s is currently at $1700 or somthing like that.

But the D300s "only" does 7 fps

to get to 12 fps is going to require a precision professional type camera and that is going to be expensive

I don't think Nikon can produce a D400 with the specification you all seem to want at a price you can afford

I think we will see a D7000 replacement next year, but it won't do 12 fps

you are probably right about me not being able to afford it, but . . .
The D300s does 8fps with the grip, as did the D300. It shouldn't be too expensive to make the mirror go fast enough, the mirror is only half as big as one in the D3 that did 11fps, or the one in the 1DX that does 14fps. The other chalenge is autofocus - and with phase detect on chip, the camera can take an autofocus reading every time the shutter opens, which would help the autofocus speed no end. I think Nikon could fit 12fps dx into $2000.

You know Seven, the more time that passes, the more I believe the D300s will be upgraded and the less I believe we'll see a direct D7000 upgrade.

For one thing, I think D7000 is being completely replaced by D600. The D90/D7000 line has always been the enthusiast offering from Nikon and D600 only continues in the same trend. So having another enthusiast camera in the line doesn't make much sense for Nikon.

OTOH, there is a huge demand for a D300s replacement and another D7000 type camera just won't fill the gap.

Also, the latest firmware upgrade for the 7D confirms that Canon is still interested in that segment of the market and if Canon is interested then you can bet Nikon is too.

I agree with you though, it won't be 12 FPS. Probably 7 or 8 w/o grip.

My business experience tells me there is if often a very big gap between, what the customer "demands" and what they are prepared to pay

but time will tell. none of know how much a D400 would cost to make

Speculation of course but price probably around $1800-$2200 depending on features. Cost to produce? I don't know... $1100? $1200?

There are still a lot of unanswered questions that I think every thing hinges on. There is that huge price gap between the high end DX camera and the D800/D4. The big question is what will the final cost of the D600 be and what will the build be like? It's hard for me to believe the rumored price at around $1500 because it could be a D400 killer unless as my folks think it will be in a D7000ish body. Then there's still the huge gap between a $1500 D600 and the D800. I'd prefer to see a $1500 D400 and a $2K D600 (most because I don't want the '600)

If the D600 is at the $1500 price point then I would expect the D400 would need to be at the high end of everyone's expectations. I don't think Nikon wants to be in competition with themselves.

I know it's obvious here but I was out with some local Nikon people and there really is some pent up demand for the D400.
