I placed my order last Friday, I believe. Now they are saying "on backorder". This cannot be good news! I think I should have placed order 2-3 weeks ago. Of course, don't advertise unless it is available.
Not bad-mouthing Adorama or anything. I expected it honestly. They are not charging my card either. So....it goes....
I guess I'm missing the point as to why this is "bad news"...
My order with B&H also says "on backorder"...IMHO this is case of simple semantics. Bottom line, at this point and time no one has the camera in stock and from a marketing point of view, it's probably better to use the term "back order" rather than "out of stock". Some marketing guru probably has some studies that consumers become less upset over a product being "back ordered" rather than "out of stock".
No joy -- but full marks to Adorama for trying to tell you ASaP.
My point is "preorder" with expected Mar 22 drop date and backorder with no expected date are two entirely different things.
I hope they have enough stock to fulfill my "late" order. LOL
I ordered the D800 from Adorama on February 17, 2012 and I also receive the email that says the item is backordered. I was contacted by a representative from Adorama about something different, and inquired about the D800. They said that I "should be one of the first ones" to get the camera.
This is an automated e-mail. It has nothing to do with the D800, it is simply an "out of stock item" in Adoramas systems, so their auto messages go out. You will get this e-mail every two weeks when you have something per-ordered or when you order something out of stock from Adorama.
Some people are pretty thick in the head.
The whole thing is confusing. OP KNOWS it is PRE-ORDER. Then to follow it up with back-order does appear to imply that you will not get it with the initial batch. So no need to attack the guy, I have seen the same thing discussed on other forum. I think Adorama and B&H both can improve this. If their software generates this email automatically then they should warn the user ahead of time, that there will be an email to that affect.

I am OP, and thank you "Canon" for sticking up for me. As for you, Mr. Frank(zor)enStein, I see you are in So Cal. Maybe I will find you on the beach with your little Toyota Prius and kick sand both in your delicate face and you Nikon D40. "Some people are pretty thick in the head". Better yet, I should toss sand in your face and in the lens mount of your D40. And how many times have you ordered a new item from anywhere, that wasn't lady-man related, of course? I can't believe how rude most lady-men like Frank(zor)enStein are. Is their's momma's fault for dressing them in "cute" high heels and "darling" make up. See, parents, this is a good example of what your son..errr..something might turn out to become. Lady-men.
Most of us who have pre-ordered the D800 are concerned because pretty much every vendor has the caveat of "released in limited quantities and shipped in the order received" language. The sellers want appropriate cover for a new product that has seen delays in release date. But most of us consumers understand that the primary vendors of Nikon gear should have some kind of idea regarding first shipment quantities, etc. I would love it if the vendors would just tell us we expect your item to be shipped on X date with the understanding that they do not control the receipt of product from the manufacturer. As it is everyone is in the dark until March 22 when we will hopefully have some information.

Why is it in every blog, regardless of the social group or niche', instead of just cordial discussion about topics we all have in common or at least a common insterest in, we cannot seem to get past the immature urge to call each other names for what appears to be no reason whatsoever?
I hope I never understand... rather than just have a discussion, learn from each other and share, it ALWAYS and I do mean ALWAYS breaks down into some kindergarten attempt to see who can degrade or disrespect the other fastest and more often.
I suspect some kind of emotional or social virus and I think its getting worse, rather than better.

The cameras will be out when they are out. My patience is thin, too. I didn't pre-order as I wanted to wait and see what everyone saw after they had them in the field.

Again I am OP. I appreciate someone trying to make peace. It really is apparent how name-calling becomes the theme on ANY forum post. I, myself, am certainly guilty.
I wish we could all support each other's artistic endeavors equally. I want advice, thus I seek it. If I could only offer as much as I receive...by the way, DIZEMAN, checked out your website. Nice work, I see Vince Neil standing with you. Haha, that's cool bro.

The level heads on this board tend to offer excellent, structured, and experienced advice. The kids who join just to throw words around will disappear as soon as they get their new toys. I recall being challenged to a road race by someone who thought I asked an unnecessary question about his desire to get into photography...I drive a 1998 4Runner, ha ha. Anyway, hang in there. I thought the D7K would be it for me for a while but I don't know anymore.
I perordered from Adorama February 8th. E-mailed them today (March 25th) since I see people getting theirs and Adorama responded they had not yet received their first shipment of the D800. I ordered from Adorama because I thought they were a big Nikon customer who would be receiving a large number of the first shipments and now I hear little stores in smaller towns and Best Buy has them before Adorama. Maybe in another week or so it will show up.

No new D800 or D4 shipments from Nikon this entire coming week. Nikon is closed for the next week for end of fiscal year inventory business. Unless there is still some D800 shipments out in the wild on their way to Adorama (or elsewhere) from last week, then nobody is getting anything for at least another 7 days.
OP here again. Now some of you guys are eating crow. Seems like my "backordered" comment, one month ago, was spot on. Anyone got their D800 from Adorama yet? Anyone? One person? someone you may know, besides KenCrockwell? Anyone? Thanks guys.
