I know of a few lenses that I will miss being able to use. The 70-200/4 IS and the new 70-300L are killer. I do gain 16-35VR and 28-300VR as a walk-around.
Surely Nikon will counter with something that will compete with Canon's F/4 zooms...right?

A lot of people have been asking about a 70-200/4 for a long time, so no one really knows. A high quality, stabilized long zoom with moderate pricing and weight would definitely fit well into the line-up though. There's no good rumors on it, but the same thing happened before we got the 16-35/4 and 24-120/4, so you never really know.
Meanwhile, the 70-300 VR sort of fits that role. It's similar to the 70-300L, while not being quite as good optically, is also not nearly as expensive. It is still pretty good for what it is though.
Nikon recently (within the last year) patented a 70-200mm F4 VR lens, so it might be coming within the next year. That being said, Nikon has patents for many lenses that are not currently being made, so it's hard to say if that one will come to light.
I'm almost certain there's a 70-200/4 coming. Nikon obviously want to have an f/4 product line; we got the 16-35 in February 2010, then the 24-120 that August. And there was a patent for a 70-200/4 some time ago. I think the only reason it's not out now is that the tsunami completely messed up Nikon's lens production.
Patience. They'll announce it when they are able, and we probably won't get much forewarning.
If you were coming from the 5d2, as I am, and owned the 70-300 IS (non-L), 17-40L, 85/1.8, 35L, and 50/1.8-- would you have any real concerns moving over to Nikon?
I am not giving up anything that can't be duplicated on Nikon, but I was seriously considering the 70-300L. It is phenomenal based on sample shots I have seen.
Also, wide angle is the main reason I want the D800. D700 or D3s? Not so much. I like landscapes, and frankly Canon's are WAY WAY behind your brand. I am looking forward to my pre-order D800 arriving in just a few more weeks. Yay!!
As others have said. It has been talked about for a while, but nothing has ever come around that we know of yet.
That being said the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 is one of the best there is. For the price of the 70-300L you can get a 70-200 F2.8 VRI. I don't know what the difference is in the Canon 70-300L and 70-300, but Nikon has the 70-300 VR that seems fairly similar.
Just as with bodies if you think there is some Canon lens that is better than the Nikon then why switch to Nikon to get a new body and use lenses you don't want? Not to mention the cost. I don't know much about Canon though...so I am probably not much help in a comparison.
Seriously, what's wrong with the Nikkor 70-300 that makes you want the Canon L version?
Other than weather sealing, there's probably not much you're missing from the Nikon one. Besides, the Canon one is just about as slow if not just as slow.
I think the Canon 70-300L is in another class than the Nikon 70-300VR.
This is from what I've read. The Canon 70-300 IS, that I own, is a different story.
The 70-300L uses Flourite and other exotic glass. It's supposed to be super sharp. That's all I am saying. And you add the 70-200/4 IS that's also very, very good...and there is a gaping hole in Nikon's range. Like Canon is missing the WA lens of Nikon (14-24;16-35VR)
