You guys seen the spec list for the Canon 5DIII?

Looks pretty impressive. Great iso and FPS maybe even a decent autofocus this time!!
Any thoughts? And no I'm not trolling but it does look to be a great all round workhorse.

Okay I will take the bait, for some it might be what they were looking for. For others they are happy with Nikons new releases. Then some are happy taking great/excellent pictures with what they have.
I am interested to see if great ISO matches Nikons D700 and D3s series cameras and about the autofocus, I hope they really improved it this time. I admit to being a keyboard commando on this because I have never used a 5DMKII personally, but from what I hear you couldn't get an action shot unless you hit the lottery that day so all 6 FPS would be wasted unless they got this one right.
But for me it doesn't matter, it won't make me switch.
Seems like a good update for Canon users. The 5D series always lagged on AF, Metering, and FPS - this should be a welcomed upgrade for Canon users.
Head to head with the D800, video will probably determine how good either is. There were quite a few who bought Canon gear just for video who were looking towards the D800 to fulfill their video needs. Nikon suffered greatly losing out to some who needed video. There may be quite a few move back or drop a second Canon setup to go back to Nikon.
I think Canon got schooled this time around. :)
Good job Canon!
You got your AF up to snuff with the D700! Better luck next time!
Looks like Canon was filling in their gaps.
What is interesting is both Nikon and Canon intend to keep their "replaced" cameras but at a lower price.
Either way I hope now that the MKIII is announced Nikon will prep the D400 announcement for the end of March or beginning of April.
I've been going back and forth in my head what the D400 will be, either Flagship DX as always or the true D700 replacement.

Yes I agree looks like they've come up with a nice upgrade. As far as I can see it offers nothing that would make a Nikon shooter want to switch, but a MK3 / 800 comparison will certainly be interesting.

LOL!
Ho hum...I actually looked at canonrumors yesterday (which felt awkward). If you shoot Canon it would be nice I guess...not my cup of tea and nothing I would switch brands for (as Canon people seem to be doing for D800). I do wish Nikon would release a 24 MP D400 though...even if it is FX I might think about it (although my money isn't burning that much of a hole in my pocket).
looks like a decent camera. embedding timecode is a quite professional feature, that will push their video-supremacy on. i am glad, nikon finally offers good video. canon seems to lack raw-output, good one on nikons side.
canon again leaves flash-technology to nikon. no wireless trigger. 1/200 flash-syc (come on!), at least their SU-800 is almost 100 bucks cheaper. i do not care, but maybe this is an indication, that both companies leave each other some part of the field exclusively.
hopefully, canons month of glory will soon be over and nikon again steps into the light: with a cool 2000-bucks 24 MP pro-body with good video, whether its DX or FX i do not really care. the only thing my D700 lacks right now is some more MP sometimes. i am planning to solve this by getting pc-e lenses, since i only need those high MPs for landscape-stuff
getting nachos and beer ready for the D800 vs 5Dmk3-shows coming up in the next weeks.
I'm sure the new 5D Mark III will be an amazing camera the original 5D and 5D Mark II are amazing cameras and should not be dissed in any way. However, I'll be shooting Nikon for life :)

Lol and not a troll...your first post is a thread about the new Canon? Sounds troll like to me. I was going to say what would people think if I went to canonrumors and posted about the D800, but apparently they would like it and all want one...
It looks like they fixed the 5Dmk2... The 5dmk2 was a beautiful camera but some of it's shortcomings were topped by even the nikon D7000. This looks like they fixed that. I'll still have try one to get a full assessment but it sounds like it may live up to the hype canuts seem to put on every new camera... The 6fps looks really attractive. I know nikon could have done more fps in the d800 but they probably wanted to keep the costs lower so they didn't. I bet canon waited just so they would know what punches to pull against the nikon (probably had 3-5 final prototypes and picked the optimum one). Faster fps, much higher ISO's (possibly cleaner than the D700 although I doubt it), and the starring button (which I have been demanding from nikon for some time)
Never know until you try. Also the canon "L" lenses would never convince me to switch. Most cannot resolve at that pixel pitch...
kyoshi - d800 has 36mpx not 22mpx like in canon, that's more than 60% of data! for me the new Canon is neither revolutionary nor evolutionary, they just fixed this what sucked big time in mk2. the thing I like from todays canon announcement was the new radio controlled flash. that's what I would love to see in Nikon lineup one day - preferably sooner than later.

Why so we can hear 21321 people whine that it costs x3 then Pocket Wizards so why should we spend the money.
I love Nikon but they should stick to what they know. If they added radio triggers it wouldn't be cheap and I'd rather, just like GPS, have it optional than built in.
I am already aware of that adamz. The 5Dmk3 is the camera the 5Dmk2 should have been but I am still convinced that Nikon could have done more to the D800 if cost wasn't an issue. Canon has always been a step behind nikon since the D3 but they are closing the gap due to nikon's inherent contempt. Many (if not most) of us wanted a D700 with the new stuff in the D7000. Nikon obviously was primarily targeting canon and sony users with this camera, not loyal upgradees. I have a feeling that time will tell the fate of the "D400" and "D700s" though.
I'm not a marketing expert, but If the majority of nikon users I know (or have talked to) wanted a D700s not a D5mkII It tells me that that there is a big possibility that a huge portion of the market was neglected (Almost a 50/50 split I think of people who want a COMPACT high performance and a COMPACT high resolution). The D4 is not the answer to the high performance mid body, just like the D7000 is not for the D400 class
I'm not sure how well the Verge knows there cameras, but the consensus from their review was that the D4 had good video, but not amazing video. Canon continues to understand the needs of video shooters better than Nikon, and I think the 5d is probably going to be the most desired device for the dedicated DLSR videographer.
What Nikon has done, however, is given still shooters who a host of reasons they wouldn't want to defect.
For still shooters however, I have to wonder why anyone would still shoot Canon. I guess if you are frustrated by the strange gap between the D4 @ $6k and the D800 @ $3k then the 5d makes sense, but I'd rather just grab a used D700 to fill that void and spend the extra $1000 on a nice lens.
I also fully expect the D400 to be a small slow version of the D4. W/ the D7000 selling around $1000, and the D700 (apparently not discontinued) selling around $2,000, who in their right mind would pay $1800 for a DX camera? In my mind, the D400 will compete directly with the 5D MkIII and could very likely win.
@kyoshi - please take into consideration that d800 was a camera scheduled for delivery 1 year ago, Nikon is catching up - hopefully sooner than later. I still think we gonna see d700s with sensor either from d3s or from d4.
You are right... I wont be buying one till probably august-November anyway so Ill see how it plays out. Does the D800 have 1 or 2 expeed 3 processors?
The D800 has one dual-core Expeed 3 chip (same as D4).
An extra $1000-1200 for the upgrade to 4 year old body that won't even SPOT-meter at chosen AF-point ?? !!. A real joke considering Nikon had it even in the D80.
The D800 is a steal at $3,000. Nikon might regret they announced it so cheap.
Even if its not the best thing in the world, Canon upgrading their product is good for both the Canon and the Nikon photographers.
Personally, I can't help but feel its a bit of a pissing war between a lot of the people in here. Its also pretty funny how people change what is important when "their" company adopts it. A couple of years ago, every Nikon person was saying "more mega pixels? We have enough, only Canon idiots want more". Now the same people are saying the opposite.
So to be honest, when I hear Nikon people trash Canon cameras and the reverse, I wonder how much of it is actually valid discussion?

I guess the replacement for D700 will be the D900 which will have similar spec with MKIII. and the D400 will be an successor for D300S to against 7DII.
If keep producing D700, the pricing would be a problem.

Not claiming to be an expert here but how do you do that? Are you saying that you can choose an off centre AF point and it will spot meter from that? I haven't heard of this feature but it would be pretty handy. I always thought the spot meter was from the centre of the frame. Can you or someone else give a reference to this? Thanks
Nikon bodies spot meter from the selected AF point, unless you are using an AI or AI-S lens.
