What is the shortest focal length a lens can be (more specifically for prime lenses rather zoom)?

I've a zoom lens which is 18-105 and I love it. I've also a 50mm prime and 35mm prime. My 18-105 is my work-horse lens, but for travel, etc. it's just big and bulky; I take my 35 during such cases. But I want wider!

So, really, my question is more along "Can an 18mm fixed focal length lens be made? If so, are there any?"

    Thanks you guys!

    Nikon makes a 14mm.
Sigma makes an 8-16mm zoom for DX that isn't ridiculously heavy. Bulbous (no filters), some distortion below 12mm, but LR mops up a lot of that fairly nicely.

jonathenn - yes 18mm primes can be made, but they are not smaller than your "HUGE" 18-105. wish my work-horse lens wold be so big as Yours 18-105 (most of the times my standard, travel lens is 24-70/2.8:))

Nikon used to make an 18mm AF-d lens, which you still shou7ld be able to find on Fleebay ( if you're lucky..) ...

    Her's Nikons page :

Also i used to have a Tokina AF 17mm AT-x Pro, which is a nice little lens too, these yuo should also be able to find on fleebay , i guess...

Oh wow! I've honestly searched and searched for them but never had any luck! All I ever found with lenses that wide were fisheyes! I figured it was because they just couldn't be made. I posted here thinking I would get some scientific responses telling me that 18mm lenses couldn't be made because of refractive properties of glass and this and that. Haha.

Alright, well - thanks for the responses you guys! Have a good day! :D
