I am intrigued by new D800. The 5d3 appears to be a major disappointment to me. Nearly same MP count, and IQ probably very similar. I own these lenses for Nikon: Tokina 28-70/2.6-2.8, 50mm/1.8 AF-D, 35/1.8 Dx, 85/1.8 AF-D, and 70-300 VR.
Are these good enough to warrant building my glass collection? I have the 35L, and would like Nikon's equivalent. The only thing that bothers me is Canon's fine arsenal of F/4.0 zooms, which Nikon doesn't really have much of.
I guess I will add my 2 cents on people leaving Canon for Nikon or the reverse situation. I admit I like the new products that Nikon has released, some might like Canons products better. Cameras are like cars, you need to get what suits you best. When I first looked at cameras I picked up a Nikon and a Canon, I liked the feel of the Nikon better so thats what I ended up with. I have a hard enough time getting good composition much less to fumble through a menu at the same time. Other people might find that the Canon feels better to them.
I now have way too much glass to even think about switching. If I were in your shoes, I would ask myself why do I want to switch? Nikon and Canon have been back and forth, I am pretty sure it will continue, it just might be slower than what people want.
What I gather from reading your post, you have both Canon and Nikon equipment. It really depends on what your needs are what lenses suit you. If your a casual shooter using Nikon then the 28-300 might be a good option but if you are shooting sports like a high school football game then you would probalby need something along the lines of a 70-200 2.8. At this point its all a guess of what you need or want, besides wanting the best...Nikon (had to take a stab at Canon while I could). Either Nikon or Canon can take great photos, its more up to the user how well it turns out.
Thanks Scooby. I shoot landscapes mostly. High ISO has never really been too much of a concern. I expect a clean, nice ISO 6400 shot (my, my haven't expectations gone up in this era of technology??)
Canon doesn't have any answers, yet, to the 16-35VR and the 14-24--although the Tokina 16-28 is a viable option (I hear). As far as primes, Canon used to hold that advantage. Now, it's pretty close, pretty similar IMHO. I don't shoot sports per se, but will be doing some shots on the beach of surfers. Planning trip to Puerto Rico this year hopefully, and will definitely be taking some landscapes and night shots, also.
Perhaps waiting on reviews for both 5d3 and D800 would be wiser. Or I could order the D800 and test directly against my 5dII, and just return it if I was unsatisfied. What really has my eye is the release date of the D800-- my 35th birthday!! How ironic is that?? I am getting pumped already!!
I will say one thing for Canon shooters, at least if Canon doesn't make a lens for it you can get an adaptor to use a Nikon lens. I have seen several 14-24mm Nikons lenses mounted on a Canon body. I think it only works with the newer AF-S Nikon lenses, but I don't know; I just can't see the adaptors being able to use the screw drive.
Your question about the 35L, I assume this is the 35mm 1.4L lens from Canon. Nikon released its 35mm 1.4 with in the past 2 years I think. It was released with the 24mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.4. Some have refered to this as the new trinity set to get, I would have to assume that the 35mm Nikon version is pretty good.
Besides the 35L do you have any other Canon glass that would hold you back? I will add sometimes its just not the camera and the glass to go with it but think about flashes and any other items you use on a normal basis that are brand specific (pocket wizzards, ect, ect).
I guess I am waiting on a rewiew as well but on this one its Nikon agaist Nikon, the D800 Vs the D800e. I like options but geez I want a crystal ball to tell me which one would suit me best.
The only thing that the 5dmkii has over a d700 is video and a few more MP. other than that EVERYTHING on the d700 is better than the 5dmkii.
Now the D800 comes out and blam! it's all over canon.

I own the 35 1.4G and it is fantastic, some people say better than the 35L, but I have never used that.
You will need better glass for the d800, especially the 70-300 will need an upgrade.

The adaptor works with any nikon lens, but you don't get AF, you don't get metering and you can't change aperture if its a G lens.
Oops, guess that shows that I really have not looked into it that much, I guess just being able to mount it is a start.
For what its worth, I can't imagine a camera that Cannon could release that would make me want to switch systems. Photography is expensive enough in a single ecosystem as it is. If I were a Cannon shooter, I'd stick with it.
Of course we all benefit from better economies of scale for Nikon, so by all means, make the switch. It's only money.
