So I've been a very long time Canon user. I shoot sports on a very large field but have been jealously eyeing the 200-400mm/f4 lens. I've always wanted it, but the Nikon cameras never did it for me. I sell lots of 20x30 prints and I have to crop and 12MP just wasn't doing it for me. I've rented the lens, loved it, but I much preferred my 1D4 to the D3. Besides, I was waiting for the Canon version of the lens. Waiting and waiting and waiting.... and waiting....
So it seems the Canon lens is coming to production but will have a price tag of around $11,000. Eleven large. I about crapped my pants. I thought about it for a few days. Gave a big screw it, ordered the Nikkor 200-400/f4 and a D4. I'm going to sell my 400/2.8 and the extra 5 pounds. I figure with the low light capabilities of the D4 I'm better off with the flexibility of the zoom and the five pounds saved.
I'll get minimum $6k for my 400/2.8, minimum $3K for my 1D4. I'm going to keep the 5d2 + 70-200/2.8 II for now. This really isn't costing me much at all.
I gotta say, I'm feeling a little nervous, though. Hope I did the right thing.
