Hi,I m advancing (I have a D90) and i have decided to invest in a cheap flash. I have come down to the Yongnuo YN-468 II on ebay for $100. does any one have any experience with it, or can recommend anything else good in that price range.

    All help greatly appreciated.

If it doesn't have to have TTL support I would go for the YN560 instead. You'll get more power for less money. The drawback is of course that it's completely manual. Other than that all I can say is that I haven't had any trouble with the Yongnuo brand.

I have the YN467 which is essentially the same flash, just has no lcd. I suppose it was 70$ well spent, but for any serious work I wouldn't recommend it. It's just not trustworthy. Sometimes it's going off on it's own and when I need to take the shot it's not working because of that. While iTTL certainly works, it's not very accurate, very often underexposes I don't think a Nikon flash would work this way. (this is not a power output problem, with full manual it's enough for everything) The optical slave mode works well for me, so even after I end up buying an sb700 it will still be useful.

I know someone who uses and really likes the YN flashes, although I can't really say that I've been a fan. I can't remember which model I played with (might have been the 560) but it seemed pretty good and fairly reliable.

Personally, my choice for cheap manual power flashes would be the LumoPro stuff- the LP160 and LP120 which are powerful, responsive, reliable, easy to use and very cheap. Alternatively, something like a vivitar 285HV might work- I think the voltage on the newer versions is compatible with modern cameras, but you will have to check.

Of course, if you want TTL flash metering from a 1st part, don't need a lot of power, and you don't intend to ever use flash off camera, you could always just go with an SB400.

I almost forgot to mention the biggest shortcoming! The AF assist light is horrible, it's worse than not having one, seriously. Don't expect your camera to focus with this in dark :D
