A few months ago I saw on NR's blog that there might be a possible release of an 18-300 mm zoom lens from Nikon. Do we know if this is indeed coming or is it stil at a rumor's stage?

I like my 18-105 mm VR but would not mind longer for very "don't wanna miss a thing" light traveling. I find the 18-200 nikkor kinda expensive, so I'm leaning toward Tamron's more recent 18-270 mmm PZD super zoom.

Could be. I don't think they have good info on the new lenses they are going to release though and the last several lenses were total surprises. The Nikon 18-200 isn't that bad. B&H has refurbished ones for $650 or so. That is about what I paid for mine used a couple years ago. Not sure why others are selling theirs for ridiculously high prices...I checked out Amazon and they had them for near $1000 which I would not pay.

I am not a Tamron fan. Most of the reviews seem positive on that lens, but it also seems like 1 in 5 the person either really didn't like it or got a bad copy. If I was going to spend $550 on the Tamron I think I would spend $650 on the Nikon instead. Reviews also said it was soft and had bad CA from 200-270.

Although I am always not sure how to trust reviews from people buying this level of equipment. I think some have no idea how to use their cameras. I think others expect to get results consistent with say the Nikon 70-200 F2.8. The P&S I got my wife for Christmas has horrible reviews. It takes great pictures and it is easy to use. There are some advanced settings though that could cause you to take poor pictures if you don't use the camera right. I think most people just didn't know how to use the camera.

+1 I nominate you as "King of the Thread" for that one.

It is hard to know what Nikon will release especially with the new mount of the J1/V1 now. I have rarely seen a Nikon patent where the lens was released within 2-4 years if ever. Personally I never wait if I have a use now for something.

I'm not a big fan of all-in-ones but Tamron is better than others (except Nikon) in this class by a long shot. The Tamron 18-270mm PZD (PZD for sure) seems to be getting good reviews and a local camera shop (that I trust) loves it and have had many buy it who really like it as well. When I played with it, the VR seemed to work really well and for a all-in-one travel zoom was actually a good lens. As with all tele-zooms there are trade offs but if that is what you are looking for, it sounds like a good option.

In comparison to Nikon 200-400 its kinda cheap

A friend had a Tamon 18 -200 which he liked until he tried my Nikon 18-200

at the time we both had D90s

The optical qualitys were similar but by the time the Tameron had focused the action was over

He sold his Tamron the next day and bough a S/H Nikon

That was over 2 years ago it is still his main lens,
