OK, I went birding today (which was very successful, but that is another topic) and took some camera equipment. In the insterest of making it as light as possible i didn't take everything I have. My limited equipment left me with the following focal lengths.

    105mm
    157.7mm
    210mm
    300mm
    315mm
    450mm
    600mm
    900mm

    what did I take?

    A 105mm, a 70-300 and a 2X converter - assuming you have given 35mm equivalent focal lengths too.

I guess You had a FX body and for sure 105mm lens + another 300mm + TC20, this gave this:
    105mm - bare 105mm lens
157.7mm - FX in DX mode
    210mm - TC20
    315mm - FX in DX mode + TC20
    300mm - bare 300mm lens
450mm - FX in DX mode
    600mm - 300mm + TC20
    900mm - 300mm + TC20 in DX mode

Yip adamz you are right, but it was a d300s and a d700. I took the d700 incase I needed the ISO, but the D300s was fine with the flash. I got the better beamer for the sb800 on thursday, which was lucky as the weather was perfect and I nothing planned for Friday. So off I went to Tiritiri Matangi Island. If you are in Auckland, New Zealand, this is a must see place for birding.

If you had taken a Nikon V1 along, you could have lightened the load even more

Anything is possible with a Nikon V1

If you replaced your D700 with a D800 you would have a 16mp DX crop mode inside your D800 and you could have left the D300s home lightening your load even more.

when i sell the d300s to buy the d800, but I have other matters to pay for atm.

no spray, adamz's answer was the correct one. if I took a zoom I would have had a whole lot more focal lengths.

I shot most of the pics at 2.8 - 5.6 on the 300 2.8 d300s combo, giving me a nice portable 450mm 2.8. It was so good I didn't even bother trying anything else except a couple of shots of a spotless crake I took with the tc-20eiii on. I used a very good tripod for everything.

I think this was a clever way to get Adamz's advice without risking him closing the thread.

"Another lens advice thread" [Adamz]: predator...ed

"Guess what I took" [Adamz]: Well, if it were me, I'd...

So, a friend and I are going birding today. I will have 10.5mm, 600mm, 840mm, 1200mm. She will have a 410, and a 12Ga. Guess what I will shoot. Ha, ha, ha. Oh, forgot to say, wild turkey is the target. And, she was number four in woman shooters in the world in 2011 in some moving around type event. So...
