I am also one of those who wants a Nikon D800 with HD autofocus video and a +20m pixel sensor.

It would be smart of Nikon to release it soon. I have heard of a lot of people who sell thair Nikon and start with Canon because of the Nikon is far behind Canon 5Dmark2 when you look at the amount of mpixel and video.

Pixel by pixel is Nikon better and Nikon is better camera overall.

    Hi Nau

There is some digital kamera that has Autofocus while shooting HD movie so that feature is availible but Canon 5Dmark 2 has not.

What you can do with +20 mpixel that cant be done with 12??..You can crop and not loose so much details and its usefull for large prints. But more pixel with more noise is not cool so better wait until they have a good sensor. A lot of small sensors has a lot of pixel but perform bad i low light with a lot of noise.

There is actually wheater you like it or not people who chose the Canon over Nikon because of more pixel and video.

If you compare D700 and 5Dmark2 and look at the reviews then you can see that Canon has a lot more details when you crop and it came with 1080P video..But Nikon has some advantages over Canon so it depends what you like in a DSLR.

it is nice dont take it the wrong way for its class its probably kick a55
but its a DIFFERENT class camera that hardly can be compared to the ... even D5000 Id say

I believe the new Panasonic GH1 has AF while recording video and 10 power zoom designed for recording video. The electronic viewfinder and adjustable LCD screen would properly also make more like a camcorder to operate. Not that I want one!!!

NAU.. Cant you READ or understand what I write???

I wrote that there are some digital cameras that has autofocus while making video and you told me you havent seen any.. I gave you a link and I have newer compared that camera with a Nikon D700 or Canon 5Dmk2..I just told you that its possible to do it... It would be very easy to integrate that feature in a DSLR and it will come very soon.

digital and DSLR a little bit different technology
GH1 so far the only one by the looks of it ... oh and even Panasonic dude said that - it works with the lens that it came with but with other lenses from Panasonic it might be slow and not responsive enf ...

do not compare video on point and shot and dslr since the principles of tech

    - there is still issue of sensor over heating (probly coz its bigger then point and shot ones)
    - we probly will need new range of lenses with silent motors if we dont want sound of lens to be interfering with video sound
    - different in camera AF motors so they can rotate lenses responsive enf

Im very keen to see review on GH1 Panasonics whn it comes out...

Im not saying its not possible to do Im jsut saying its not gone be good enf for at least a year ...

For a D700x my wish would be for 100% viewfinder coverage and a 30MP sensor. No need for a ton of fps and I'll use a HD camcorder if I want to shoot video. But I'm sure I'm in the minority here.

so no news yet. I'm still happy with my D700. I think nikon should hurry up though. The 5DII doesn't stand a chance as a still image camera over the D700 (D700 remains king over noise and dynamic range as well as camera features) but video is big for a lot of people these days, much more than resolution. And although high MP sensors like the D3x and 5DII have come ways in low light performance, they do not even yet match what was being done in 2007 with the D3/D700 sensor.

if nikon launched a 14mp even higher performing iso camera (think 2009 tech) with full HD h264 video, they'd have another hit.

I don't think that the current world economic situation is really favourable for launching loads of new cameras. I know it will be "cool" if new and better cameras keep popping up like weeds after the rain but someone has to buy them also.

    Hi Folks:
I spent over an hour today speaking with local Nikon sales rep. These guys can be just as much in the dark on new products as any of us but they do have a better understanding of how a particular product is performing and how Nikon will react. Here is what I gathered from our conversation. Nikon has had to make an unanticipated change of plans due to the huge success of the D3s. The company had originally intended to launch a D700s (by June of this year) but in order to make it attractive would have had to include features that they felt would cannibalize demand for the D3s. Apparently the D3X is more indoor/studio type use and doesn’t require the full D3 build quality/protection. If Nikon lowered the price significantly on the D3X it would not only indicate that they missed the market price point and it would cast a shadow on the price for other Nikon products, especially the D3 series. Additionally, cutting the D3X price would mean that another camera that might use the sensor would be perceived as having a lower value. The guy I spoke with today anticipates the launch of a D700X type camera in October alongside the D90 replacement…the D9000.
Not really a rumor but interesting nonetheless.

My experience tells me sales reps don't know jack sh.... I had a sales rep tell me that a new model was coming in Feb for PMA. We've also had forum members with Nikon employee relatives or freinds tell us a D700 replacement was coming last November and December. We all know that none of that happened. Not saying I don't believe you Newfie it's just that I think reps usually get their info from reading Nikon rumors :^)

Also I don't understand how a D3X "doesn't require the full D3 build quality/protection"? They use the exact same body. The D3X sensor is also found in the $2000 Sony a900 so from the very beginning the D3X had a shadow over it because of it's price. The D700 didn't hurt the D3 at all even though they have the same sensor.

We are getting reports of D700 already being discontinued and stock starting to dry up and it wouldn't make sense if Nikon wasn't going to have something out in stores until after October. That's almost 6months away! The next camera will have more megapixels but I doubt it'll have the D3X sensor since it wouldn't be able to have video and that would be a huge mistake going against the 21mp canon 5Dmk2 with 1080 HD.

    Hey Niko.

Maybe Nikon is becoming increasingly more concerned with Sony vs Canon. We have a high MP/reasonably priced Sony going up against the D3X at more than twice the price. I understand that it's more than just the sensor that makes the Nikon better but...at their heart.. they are the same. How long before Sony figures out the Nikon secrets.

Question. Does the D3s use a Sony sensor?

Sorry I meant to say the 24mp Sony a850 is less than $2000. The a900 ($3000) was out before the D3X and there was already a bunch of hollering and crying when the price was announced. The D3,D3S, and D700 do not use Sony sensors and are original Nikon designs. All other Nikon's do use Sony's.

Do you know who manufacture the D3,D3S, and D700 sensors for Nikon? Do they have an exclusive agreement?

It's a closely guarded secret and nobody knows for sure but I suspect it's a Japanese company by the name of Renesas. Yes no other manufacturer has the "same" sensor as the D3/S or D700. It's all Nikon's.

Hi All, I've been saving up for a new camera for a while now and will be ready to purchase one in August. I had been planning on getting the new D90, but I realized that I'm not going to get another chance to make a purchase like this again anytime in the next 20 years (kiddo on the way). I figure this is my last chance to be selfish! Anyway, I'm thinking that the D700 may be the way to go, especially since the upgrade will likely drive the price down some, and it's a really stellar camera by all accounts I've seen. It would be quite a jump from my D40, but, as I said, I don't plan on another upgrade for quite a while. I don't have much invested in DX glass (just the kit lenses and the 35 mm 1.8), so no huge loss there. So, bring on the upgrade or the rebates! Come Sept it's time for a new camera (and baby)!

I've been told by my Mrs-to-be that there will be "no buying of any D700 whatchoomacallits until after the wedding..."

That's in August. So I'll be ready in September.

A D700 upgrade - and I prefer it didn't have video. I have another camera for that.
