What are if any reasons exist to upgrade from the Nikon D300 to the Nikon D300S?

I wouldn't upgrade if you all ready have a D300 Henry, but the biggest justification would definitely be the dual card slots. It's the only camera below the D3 and D3X that has this feature! Everything else is basically the same between the two, well excluding HD video of course.
I'd just wait and upgrade to a D400 or D700 replacement or get a lower priced D700 when that happens.

I agree, all the differences (other than video and that's an entirely different story) - are minor, except for the dual card feature. I wouldn't upgrade to get it myself, but I'll wait to get the D300s.

I'm pretty sure the next generation D400 will use SD memory only. CF cards are starting to look like VHS cassettes ! I just hope Nikon keeps the dual memory slots in the next model too. This feature is very useful.

Niko .. I dont know .. I think they would probably stick with the 2 card type setup. CF cards still have the advantage of write speed over the SD cards.. and for the top of the range DX camera I think that would not be a change that is needed. especially as we would be expecting a higher MP sensor and an even faster FPS on the D400. there is also the advantage of the SD over the CF format in that they are cheaper with upto 2TB memory.. Would be useful for Video recording. So for a trip you could put video on the SD card and work as usual on the CF cards. So I think its probably going to stay the same.

I have a D300 and have no desire to upgrade. I will upgrade when the Dxxx replacement comes out.

Heartyfisher ....SD speed is catching up and besides there are other tricks like a bigger buffer etc. An SD/SDHC slot takes up a lot less space than a CF card and that leaves more room for other goodies.

I'm an SD person myself. Cheaper & smaller.

I'm still waiting for the official prices in my country - but the only one reasonable reason to upgrade will be the dual card slot. I agree that SD is smaller, and it's catching fast, but CF has a great potential - it's bigger, You could easily fit at least 4 sd cards in one cf.

I'm holding on to my D300 for now. No interest in video, and not worth $$ just to get dual card slots. Unless the D400 (or whatever) is a spectacular jump, I may skip it, too. I really have almost no complaints with the D300 (although once I see better IQ of new cameras, I may change my mind).

I think warprints nailed it. If you aren't interested in speed or video, there isn't any reason to upgrade from a D300. I do think, however, that it justifies the upgrade from a D90, although you'd be much better off saving up for a D700 (A D90 \ D700 combo would be pretty sweet)... Best of both worlds kind of thing.

willis - what's with this saving up for d700, once I had it in may hands and was going to the cashier and just seconds before I got it, I realized that a nice lens would be better, and I got 24-70/2.8 instead, never after that I regret my decision.

I'll tell you why adamz... because I already have a 24-70.
There isn't any point at all if you don't already have some nice lenses to put on it. But the extra stop of clean ISO performance will make your 24-70 f/2.8 a 24-70 f/2.0 (DoF considerations aside)... not only that, but it does that for all of your lenses (well the FX ones at least). You also get a whole new set of focal lengths to work with (yes I understand that the focal length doesn't ACTUALLY change).
I plan on grabbing a D700 one day... or at least one of its equivalents. But not before I get my hands on the new 70-200. I'll probably get the 105mm macro first as well. I'm tempted to also get the 14-24, but that will probably have to wait until after the FX body... I'd rather use my trust (and filter equipable) Tokina on DX.
If you have a nice set of lenses, your cheating yourself out of a lot of options if you don't use both FX & DX.

D700 is also something I'd like one day as well. However I set my limit to spend on a body to no more than 2000 dollars. I'll happily spend up to three times as much on a lens if I had that much. The D700 is almost at the 2000 mark so I'll wait a little longer.

Maybe Nikon will be good to us this christmas and throw some nice rebates our way.
Posted 3 years ago # -
As long as they don't use the same rebate processing company that canon uses. They "lose" a lot of rebates in the mail.

I dunno, there isn't much of a difference, in my opinion. I would wait an extra generation first before I upgrade.
I don't know who I read it from, maybe Thom Hogan, but if it's lenses, it's fine if you want to buy. But with camera bodies, upgrade an extra generation ahead, e.g. if you have a D40, don't get a D40x, get a D5000 or D3000.
I think the D400 or whatever it is will be quite a significant change.

NSX - confirm, that's Thom Hogan's words

Yup, it makes sense. With the D80 to D90, picture quality was a bit of an increase, but think about it this way- what if you went from a D70 to a D90? That would be quite a bump for about the same price.

How about going from a D70 to a D700? :^) I should of never looked through that viewfinder !
Posted 3 years ago # -
Does the D300 have auto ADR?
Posted 3 years ago # -
ADR? Stop going to KR site Willis ;) The D300 does not have Active D-Lighting auto mode. Only enhanced, normal, moderate, and off.
Posted 3 years ago # -
D300 has high, normal, low and off

i'm getting ramped up for a D200-> D400 switch one day!?!!
when will it happen, who knows . . .but sick of my view finder, and have accepted DX as the line for me as I can't afford the extra lenses (most are DX in bag), extra software (DxO Std to Pro conversion), or larger file sizes. . .
But if I could a D3x would fit my photography bill perfectly :-)

The 14-24mm and 28mm/1.4 are the two lenses I'm yearning for, and they're only worth their potential on FX.
I'm waiting for Nikon to come out with D700x: 100% viewfinder coverage, 24MP (prob. cost around $3800)......man, I'd better stop dreaming !Posted 3 years ago #
