Buying an import versus the US version....what are the thoughts on this? I read the other thread on this and still had a couple of questions if anyone can help.

I understand the regular warranty does not apply, but if you can purchase a 3 year warranty from an established vendor and the price is still lower (much lower actually!) than the US version, is it worth it? Has anyone had any experience with the other warranty vendors?

What are the other negatives about doing this if there is any?

the only negative I can think of is the fact that You may have some spare money for which You can get a lot of booze and get drunk, which in the end may cause some serious health problems. seriously, it's the same product and if You buy from reputable vendor, i.e. B&H, Adorama than there's nothing You can be afraid of. IT"S THE SAME PRODUCT, NOT SIMILAR, THE SAME.

In the UK I have bought stuff on line from One Stop Digital Hong Kong

It has arrived quicker ( 3 days) than stuff order the same day from the UK

recently the price difference has reduced and some cases they are more expensive

there is a warranty but I would have to return goods to Hong Kong

for this reason I tend to buy things below £300 and take a risk

My P7100 cannot be registerd with Nikon but at the time I saved over £100 on UK price

One down side is that once the warranty expires, the Nikon Repair Center still will not accept it (at least in the U.S) for repair. You would have to find an independent shop that would hopefully be able to get parts from Nikon, at least that has been my experience with the one grey market camera I have.

How often do you get stung for import duty and VAT on arrival Seven?

@yetibuddha, this is going to be even more difficult shortly with Nikons plan to stop supporting independents with parts.

nothing to date, but onestop claim they will refund it if I do
