Hello.... Just FYI ..... on the D4 Discussion thread are a couple links to the full frame D4 and full frame D800 on Flicker.... And, it looks like the D800 has a slight edge, but very difficult to tell unless we take the same shot. And, if you D800 folks don't quit putting up these absolutely mind blowing photos, I may have to invest.... nay, just kidding, waiting for the D400.....

@PitchBlack - if You don't need more than 10-12mpx and can live with 5fps than d800 will give You nice results. DX crop mode on d800 has app 15.4 mpx, which You can crop to 10-12 mpx giving You an additional extension. not a perfect solution but...
as for the DX mode on d800, the one thing I really don't like is the way You see it in the viewfinder. instead of dimming the outer area - like in d3s - You only get a thick line, hopefully Nikon gonna change this with the release of new firmware.Posted 1 year ago # -

As I've said before, a cloudless, blue sky is one of the hardest images to reproduce without revealing a noise pattern, even at ISO 100. Shoot blue sky at ISO 100 on a D7000, and you'll see double that amount of noise. Beside, noise is clearly visible in the beige under wing and belly of the bird. You are comparing the pro D800 against the consumer D7000 that cost a third. If the D800 was just a bigger D7000, it should be in the same price range. I cannot really agree with you in your blue sky assessment, the D4 start showing some noise only at ISO 800 and I find the D800 produces similar noise at ISO 100.
D4 ISO 800: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d4/FULLRES/D4FAR2I000800.HTM
D800 ISO 100: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nikonrumors/7019634839/sizes/o/in/set-72157629289734604/I know that as a nikonian, we are all supposed to rejoice and pray the lord for the D800 blessing but for me, reality is reality and apparently, noise at ISO 100 is a hard reality I need to deal with.
I don’t see the point of having to deal with 36 MP if the 100% crop (or even 66%) is unusable and if I have to crop down to 12 MP to get rid of the noise. I know, it is a fun exercise to see your reflection on the eye of a bird but still, I can only be happy if the image is good. I don't mind noise in a night shot, but on a bright daylight?
Maybe the D800 is not a camera for me; I am leaning toward the D4 now.
I was just hoping that someone here would tell me if the noise I see is an artefact of the JPEG or something else and if the noise is the same in RAW.
I must be loosing my mind since none of you acknowledge what I am seeing.

No natural scenery (and most artificial) with a graduation of colors, will ever look like what you described you want these files to look like. The greater the color depth, the more steps in color (contrast and hue) there will be and this is recorded at a pixel by pixel level. Studio 460 is correct that skys are the most difficult to shoot and always show pixelation with every camera. You are referring to these changes in color as noise, where others call it detail and realize it is the minute changes in color.
The only way to have skies "smooth" straight from the camera is to drop the color depth so there are fewer steps in color. But then you will get banding as the changes are not as smooth.
The D4, D3s, D3, D700, D300, Canon, Leaf, Phase one, All have this type of pixelation. Most of us just use a simple mask, NR it, or a layer to smooth it out some.
Also realize that you are effectively criticizing an 8x10 image with a microscope.

I have finally looked at the image I put up
http://www.flickr.com/photos/fantinesfotos/6879005314/sizes/o/in/photostream/
and see in the sky, which had to be really burned to get any color ( would not have done this except I wanted to see what happens) and one will see all sorts of garbage in the sky. Like a water pond where small fish are coming to the surface and causing very small disturbances. The primary point in this discussion may be what Tao has pointed out. We are criticizing an 8 x 10 photo with a microscope. On the above image I posted... look lower on the image and one can read the name of the lock... BROOKS. Look around the lock, and the apparent distortion, i.e., "noise" does not seem to be present here. And when viewed full size, I cannot see the noise. Only after enlarging additionally do I see the really junky looking stuff in the sky, which, I think, is what Pierre is talking about. Looks like a bunch of little worms in a way. And, my image is the D4 just as a reminder not a D800.

@adamz ... If you turn off autofocus point illumination it will mask the outer area when in dx mode.
I just shoot full frame and crop in pp. So much more versatility vs dx! No longer chopping off ends of wings of birds in flight, for one thing.
Btw I highly recommend the DK-17M magnifying eyepiece, gives you basically the same viewfinder magnification as dx camera.

@looon & @adamz ... thanks so much for all of your help. I'm thinking about the d800 but still mulling options. I'd probably shoot in 1.2 crop mode to get the extra frame per second. This would all have been so much easier had the new Canon didn't plan on selling the 200-400/f4 with built in extender for $11,000. The Nikon lens plus a d800 is less! Crazy.

I had to share this Vimeo find...a brief video shot with the D800. View full screen and enjoy. Stunning!

@looon - thanks, will check it out
in the meantime, I went to zoo today to test the camera further and...

D800 + AF-S 300/4 + ISO 400,1/640,f4 - full size, no crop
D800 + AF-S 300/4 + ISO 400,1/500,f4 - full size, 1 to 1 - 100% crop
D800 in DX mode + AF-S 300/4 + ISO 400,1/400,f4 - slightly croppedPosted 1 year ago # -
Will the IQ of the D800 in crop mode be equal to the D7000 ?
Posted 1 year ago # -
@indygeoff - can't tell You that as I wasn't working with d7000 at all, as for d800 it kills with the amount of detail, can't think of this what d800e will bring :)

Will the IQ of the D800 in crop mode be equal to the D7000 ?I can tell you unequivocally, the D800 out-performs the D7000 in it's 15.3MP DX crop mode. The D800 has better DR throughout the ISO range, and MUCH better Chroma Noise and Luminance Noise, especially at high-ISOs.
I will be posting comparison images of the D800 vs the D7000 and D3s and will follow that with comparisons with the D4 and D800E, all of which will be posted on the NikonRumors main blog.
Without a doubt, the D800 is living-up to it's hype. I'm blown away and that's a hard thing to do.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Video test footage taken with the D800 coming soon as well.
p.s. I never thought I could love a camera as much as I love the D800. Don't get me wrong, I still LOVE my D3s, but the D800 is special.

I originally placed an order through B&H on Feb 7th (and I am not part of NPS) My order has been listed as Backordered for weeks with no end in sight.
Last week the 23rd I called a local best buy in Phoenix, Az to see about there stock, of course nothing in, but I was able to put an order in and they told me it would be in on the 30th or March, just 7 days later ( I wasnt going to hold my breath on that). As it turns out they came through.
BH is still Backordered, im working on Canceling .Posted 1 year ago # -
Nice work, adam. IQ is outstanding.
Well executed field photos are what mean something, not tiresome comparisons between other cameras.

High (and Low) ISO comparisons of the D800 vs D700, D3s, 5D Mark II, and 5D Mark III.
Enjoy!

Guys don't forget to write links in words (eg *****dotcodotuk)so they're not removed and we can all look at them. Cheers.

@lynne24 - no matter what You think, mods are not as stupid as You think; there's a policy on this forum which was discussed many times before and if You want to post a link to commercial site (and especially, if You are a newcomer) You should get admin's approval (PERIOD). It's his site and he has the right to allow it or not. My duty is to follow the rules. Like it or not.
Posted 1 year ago # -
@adamz Thinking no such thing! Not familiar with the rules or reasoning on the posting of links as is apparent from my post. Just noticed a lot of people are posting them expecting them to be seen. All a bit confusing to us newcomers. Polite advice from old hands always appreciated. Thank you.

I just want to know where you all got your D800s from. I'm seeing all these people with photos, and I can't find a D800 within 300 miles (and all of the online retailers telling me that it'll be another month before more stock comes in).

@CaryTheLableGuy, I for one will be looking forward to your real world image quality comparisons between the D800 and the D4. I was going to mention this in the PAD thread after seeing several of Msmoto's photos but it seems, and I stress TO ME, that the D4 produces sharper images. It could be that too many folks are so concerned about the High ISO capabilities of the D800 that fewer post are showing how sharp the photos can be.
I agree that the D800 images look awesome but I'm not seeing the same detailed sharpness and clarity as in those D4 pics. Other than the extra bells and whistles on the D4, this makes me think that Nikon knew exactly what they were doing by charging another $3000 for that camera vs. the D800.

Well I do have a question that has been brought up a bit but not focused on much. The D4 and D800 have the same autofocus system I think and it goes to F8 on some parts of the sensor. Has anyone tested say a 600mm with a TC-E 2.0 III. I only ask here because you can crop pretty much to the DX size and well a 1800mm sounds nice to have but a monster to handle effectively.
I see it did work better with the 300mm F4 and a TC-E 1.7, figured I would ask to see if anyone had tried the ultimate long distance shot yet.

+1000000000. Coming from the D7000, I am stunned at the IQ of this camera. Just gorgeous. Even the bokeh is better. Also the autofocus leaves the D7000 at the curb. My ability to capture little songbirds in flight etc, and even objects right up against like-colored busy backgrounds, is greatly improved. This is indeed a magical camera. It has turned my little 70-300 into a whole new lens.

They're out there, but you have to look hard. I had an urgent commercial requirement and only one D700 for two shooters , so I spent the day driving to different bestbuys until I found one that was both in stock and available for sale. Calling around didn't help, because whoever had one, without exception, would say they were reserved. I'm pretty sure the one I got was on an expired temporary hold, so go to the store and ask in person, or buy on line and wait. It's only time. (I almost resigned myself to the wait but I read here on NR that they are coming in a few at a time to bestbuy.). Edit: the bestbuy where I found this was in a rural town where it is unlikely they have many walk-ins for a camera like the D800.
