    Um... one question.

Is the IQ as good or better than D700?

Because if it is, at that resolution, I am ready to switch back to Nikon.

Also, I always work with 25 mpix and had no issues( I bump up the resoultion from 10 in photoshop).

I thought about getting a 5dII, but D800 just seems to be in class of it's own with flash sync speed and viewfinder, not to mention the resolution.

Just got my D800! I never thought it would arrive today. I'm not going to be very productive at work today :)

    Any questions ?
I will do some serious comparisons with a D700 and D7000 this week-end. Will post the results!

    Yeah, I've got a question.

Do you own a 24-120 VR f4, and what do you thing of that lens and d700 combo in general?

I shoot fashion, and I love my canon 24-105 IS f4, would love to keep that range on Nikon

Just lurking here, i happen to have a 24-120mm f/4.0 VR Nikkor. Absolutely fantastic lens. I bought this instead of the 24-70, f/2.8 which does not have VR. you can PM me if you want some reference links with the 24-120 shots on them....

    No, I don't own a 24-120, and I don't own a D700.

Unboxing mine now! I ordered mine online on 2/14 and also one in March from a different site. Knowing that I was probably a ways back in the queue and after seeing some posts on here that people were finding a few in stores, I started calling all places in my area that might carry the camera and probably weren't taking a waiting list before it was released. I found a discount camera store that had been allotted literally ONE single camera, and managed to take it off of their hands! :D

I picked up my new D800 a few hours ago! It pays to be nice to people and to be a loyal customer. Although I was not officially on my local camera store's list, I called a few days ago and asked how long the list was. I was told the the list of pre-orders and pre-paids far outweighs any amount of cameras Nikin will be sending them. Well, today I got a call from the store owner who said they received TWO cameras and if I wanted one he would be willing to jump me ahead of anyone because I've been a loyal customer of theirs for 15+ years.

I charged the battery, set the camera to Aperture Priority and fired off one shot. Below is the first photograph, taken in horrible light, JPEG Fine, HAND HELD at f/16 @100, ISO-100 (24-120 lens). My biggest concern were all of the warnings that this camera can not be hand held. Well, althought the shot is sub-par, I'm happy with what I see.

I pre-ordered in a small shop in Switzerland. I was the first to pre-order there and they got one D800 on launch day (for me). When I wanted to pre-order, I called online stores here in switzerland and they all had over 150 pre-orders already. I was lucky to find a local camera shop that wasn't very expensive.

Mmmm.... this is impressive.... and I know exactly what happens with the first shots.... anything out there... but the camera and your technique seem to be going well together. Really nice crisp photo....

I think unless something else comes out that is full frame and less megapixels than the D800 while retaining the video options, I will be looking to join the D800 club later this year. Concerned about my glass that isn't the 24 f/1.4, 16-35 f/4, abd 100 macro though. I love my old 70-200 but I know it doesn't handle corners well! I can easily replace my nifty 50 if need be but telephotos... not as easy to replace on my wages...

Sorry, El_Pickerel, with the lenses you have you are not allowed to say anything about your "salary", Ha, ha, ha..... I do, however, agree with you re: the D800. Very impressive and it will be interesting to see what the D400 will be like. If it has a 24MP sensor, it may trump the D800 in that the telephoto effect of 1.5 is often valuable and if it can get up to 8 FPS, this is sometimes helpful. On PAD, I shot at 8 FPS to get the one shot I put up today....

I am very torn between this and a D700 for ~65% of the price . I mostly shoot HS sports at my son's school. My D90 does .. ok ... I'd like the newer tech in the D800 and losing the reach from the crop sensor would be offset by the extra cropping I could do.

I would have been all over this if they were at 18-20MP with 6+ FPS without a grip.

I just cant quite justify the D4 since I do this as a hobby. My wife would probably let me do it, but I can't get my head around the price. Hell, my first 2 vehicles combined did not cost as much as a D4.

IndyGeoff: wait 6 months. Perhaps then you can get a used D3s for less than the price of a new D00.

Being an owner of a D800 I can say first hand that this is an amazing, ground-breaking, record setting camera in IQ and Resolution. That being said, if the main use of your camera is for capturing HS sports, you have to ask yourself if you would EVER take advantage of 36.3 MP. I highly doubt it. True, you can downsize your image size with the D800, but that's like buying a Porsche 911 to drive around a parking lot.

The D700 is still a top rated high quality camera. Unless you intend to print LARGE prints above 24x36 then anything more than a D700 would be wasted. I presume most of your images are for web only.

By the way...I LOVE MY D800!!!

Not salaried... Hourly wage. Had lots of overtime early this year hence the 24 f/1.4. Can't repeat a purchase like that for plenty of months or until I actually sell out of the hobbies I orphaned when I got into photography. :p

If anyone's interested, Digital Rev has a review on the D800. But don't expect it to be technical.

It's time for me to take my head out of the sand, and see if anyone else is having issues with their D800. I have experienced a handful of prolonged read/write delays with my camera. Each time I am shooting with a CF card AND an SD card, and I'm pretty sure it has only happened when writing to or reading from the SD cards. I know it has happened to more than one SD card, and at least one of them is brand new (Sandisk Extreme 16gb 300x class 10). It has happened when taking a single photo (probably a 10+ second lock out) as well as in playback mode, especially when zooming.

    Has anyone else seen this?

Ron, I was just reading where a guy with a D4 (y i know you have D800, but both are new cameras and may have similar problems) had a lockup start to occur after an extended shoot when he was using 1 slot as a backup. Almost sounds like the camera's do not like writing to 2 different types of cards, though his required a battery removal to unlock.

I am curious to see if others have your problem, though this would not be a deal breaker for me when/if i finally pull the trigger.

Another test shot to share. I'm absolutely amazed and thrilled with my D800!

The following shot is hand held, ISO 100, 120mm @ f/4, 1/500. This image shows the original shot then a 100% crop from the center frame. Notice the detail and sharpness. This was shot in JPEG Fine with no post adjustments.

    ;)

Now be easy on cgrossmeier, cyclekraft. You know how everyone gets so excited about this stuff and we forget where we are.

And, the images above... we have entered an age in which the image quality of digital simply eliminates film. You photos are of almost unbelievable technical quality. Was that a 24-120mm VR which you used?

Is it just me or is everyone impressed that the $3,000USD D800 beats the $42,000USD 81Mpix medium format Phase One IQ180.

Yes, msmoto, it's the Nikkor 24-120 f/4 VR. I'm glad I made the decision to go with this lens over the 24-70 f/2.8

Impressed? To say the least! I had intentions on getting a digital back for medium format. I used to own a Bronica 645, which was amazing but only film based. The price of MF digital backs is what has kept me from making the leap to digital medium format. The D800 has saved me thousands upon thousands of $$$ and given me a more "all around" camera. Did I mention that up until 4-days ago I've been a Canon guy. I can also say that Nikon glass is far superior to any Canon glass I've owned.
