"gentoo - I know Your pain, as I would love to have 400/f5.6 but to be honest, we are in minority - most people here, and most Nikon users don't care about long end, moreover, for most of them 200mm is a super tele (please all of You who think like that, don't take it personal). I don't mind FX primes, but the truth is that there are great lenses in the small range, maybe not primes, but still You guys have an option... and OTOH there's no single, affordable lens once You cross the 300mm border (apart from the slow 80-400 zoom)"

You're exactly right adamz. Nikon is simply doing what they need to do for the main market users. I seriously almost bought a Canon 40D and that 400mm5.6 instead of the D90 I got. I just couldn't bring myself to do it but I came really close.

"the problem with digiscoping is the f stop, as on the long end they tend to be very dark, not to mention lack of AF"

Exactly. With my dodgy vision digiscoping is not an option for me. If it weren't for AF I could not do photography.

It's true that Nikon doesn't have the reach that Canon may have, but then again you can always get that teleconverter with that 300mm 2.8, right?

Sure it's expensive, but it comes out to be about the same, no?

I don't shoot wildlife (although I would certainly not mind), but I understand why you guys are somewhat inconvenienced. Plus that DX crop certainly helps a good bit. Unless you really splurge on glass though, FX users are a bit invonvenienced indeed.

NSX - it's not the same, I have 70-200+TC17=340mm and I'm waiting for the new 300/f4, sure I could get 300/2.8 - the problem is price - $5k is too much right now for me, for $8k I can buy 400/2.8 - probably the best lens in Nikon linup, but the problem is that for my usage I'll be fine with 400/5.6 with a price tag of $1-$1.5k or 400/4 with a price tag around $3k, unfortunately Nikon doesn't deliver this lenses, once You go for wildlife and want a longer range You actually doesn't have any options, either You have to save a lot, or go for 3rd party lenses - Sigma, and still You don't have too many options - either 300/2.8 without VR for around $3k or 500/4.5 for around $5k also without VR, and VR in the long lenses really matters NSX, much more than in the standard range.
As for the DX crop indeed it helps a lot, gives You the additional reach. Although I wouldn't mind to see a 15-18Mpx full frame body with at least 6-7fps and a price tag around $2-$2.5k; 12Mpx is not enough for wildlife, unless You really have all the long lenses - Nikon 600/4 or Sigma 300-800/5.6

Niko - canon is the last company I would look for, the stupidity of their menu is certainly not for me, I'm an apple kid :) - intuition is the key to my heart :)

I'd take care in writing off Sony and its' effect on both Canon and Nikon in the long run.

They had the smarts to associate with Zeiss for AF lenses, and recently re-newed that contract. Trust me, neither Canon nor Nikon currently have lenses that compete with a few of these Zeiss optics ... and more are on their way.

IMO, Nikon has the edge in over-all functionality and performance with time tested duribility ... but Nikon doesn't currently have a competitive product against the 24 meg A900 priced at $2,700. and bundled with a Zeiss 24-70/2.8 is an even better bargain for what you get .... which BTW is an Image stabilized lens like every lens you put on an A900.

My hope is that Nikon will respond with a few new fast primes like a new 85/1.4 AFS ED Nano coated optic, and a modern AFS 135/1.8 VR to go on a D700X priced at 3K for the body.

Not that that would keep new sales down for Sony who is just getting started, but it'd go a long way to shore up loyality to Nikon for current owners.

I agree that Sony is a serious contender.. They have the deep pockets.. Just like Canon.. However .. I still like Nikon..Their technicaly based culture may be a commercial weakness.. but I think the new guys(management) are striking a good balance....

Every single thing adamz said in the above post is absolutely 100% true! Especially the part about 12MP not being quite enough. Now hopefully the rest of you understand why Nikon and Canon continue to increase megapixels in their high end line of cameras. We need long focal lengths with sensors loaded with pixels and they should be good at high ISO's too. Remember when I said wildlife shooters push their equipment to the limits? This is what I'm talking about. Everything is extreme in wildlife shooting just to get a decent shot.

Although Sony A900 has 24MP, but no live view and not so good high ISO performer.
The most crucial factor is, there are only few good lenses on the Sony line-up to support the high resolution of it's sensor.

sep1766 - do You really need live view in this camera? I have it in one of my cameras, and used it once. As for high performance, I guess this camera wasn't designed to do that. Ok, we are spoiled by the d3/d700 behavior, but once You compare a900 to d3x You will see that there's not too much difference in high iso performance, sure Nikons grain looks great comparing to a900, but once You take the files from a900 and put it through Noise Ninja, the difference is... not so visible, maybe 1 stop. As for the lenses, well... sony's 24-70 is probably the best lens in this group, indeed they don't have too many lenses, but this what they do have pretty much covers all the range (up to 300mm).

Nothing past 300 in primes (other than 500 reflex) and a zoom to 400. No tilt/shift, nothing wider than 16 in full frame.

Add a history of memory sticks and proprietary standards...

I always thought Sony better at video and understanding the their needs better than still photographers.

As a lover of ultra-wide angle lenses (I love the 10-24 for DX, would only buy an FX body if I could get the 12-24/2.8) Sony has nothing for me.

I'm also very interested in Macro and while Nikon has seemed to abandon the 200/4, at least it's available used or imported, not to mention the T/S lenses with macro focusing. The 85/2.8 TS is my next lens, so for now, for me, not competitive.

Ted this is a good point. This is why I don't see Sony being anything more than what it is with DSLR's. They are too proprietary.

To those thinking that Sony is not a big player yet...

True, Sony is not a big player... yet. I predict that in 2 years, Sony is going to be much more important. If Nikon does not follow with more serious video feature, they might become a bit like Leica... Giving much more room for Sony to compete against Canon in the consumer market. I hope Nikon stays in the competition and we're going to see that in the next few months. Even if Nikon stays very strong, I believe Sony is getting stronger and stronger.

They are the only non-Canon or Nikon company to offer the Full frame sensor in a DSLR.
Sony also offers a nice range of lenses including 16-35 ƒ/2.8 and 70-200 ƒ/2.8 both for FX format. They pretty much have all the most important lenses by now and I guess they are working on more macro, T&S, exotic telephotos, wide angles, etc. They already started it will only continue.

They are also about to offer video in their DSLR, considering Sony's experience with video features, it will probably be as good as Canon's video feature in the 5D2.

They have that new kind of sensor coming, if it's really as good as they say in a DSLR, many low light photographer will be tempted, including me.

I believe that Sony, as a bigger company, as the power to compete with Canon much more aggressively than Nikon. Even if the later is very strong due to their fanboys. However, if Sony finds a way to offer much more for the same $, they are going to steal customers to both Canon and Nikon, even in the professional market. I wouldn't be surprised to see that Nikon turns into Leica in the next 5 years, although, I hope they stay strong.

Adamz - Live view is essential in macro and close-up work, when focus accuracy is a must then nothing works better than live view.

It's also a handy thing to use for checking focus accuracy of the lens (in the case of back/front focus issue).

I have MF lens on my camera most of the time so live view does help (although it takes time to set up)in my close-up work until I get the KatzEye installed in my camera.

One of the primary reasons I might consider a full frame body, is to expand beyond the 10-24 DX wide angle (15-36 equiv.) to the 12-24. I don't believe Sony competes there yet.

I do a lot of macro work and don't feel that live-view offers me anything. I do use depth of field preview on the D90 frequently, but prefer not to take my eye from the finder. I must admit that I would never buy a camera without a viewfinder. Holding a camera away from me while shooting hand-held seems like true stupidity. I was taught to tuck my elbows in, left hand under lens, squeeze the release for minimum vibration. I know VR compensates for operator error, but why shoot in a manner that increases vibration. When shooting macro on a tripod the vibration issues are mitigated, but unless I used a dark cloth or was shooting inside, the lcd can be hard to see in the sunshine.

For a news photographer getting pictures over their heads, etc., live view is a great asset, otherwise, not for me.

    Note - not talking video.

jbl, that's a very well explained statement about Sony. Perhaps you're really on to something there with that assessment. Sony may well be the next big DSLR maker to compete with Canon. I don't care for Sony cameras myself so when/if the day comes when Sony replaces Nikon and is no longer making things I want, I will have no choice but to migrate to Canon. I love my Nikons though.

DPreview has a review out for the A380, apparently, it's not all that great. If Sony continues to make cameras like that, Canon and Nikon don't have anything to worry about.
